Who Will Win Gold? Carolina Players Weigh In - Open Olympics Thread
The Carolina Hurricanes held another long practice today which was comprised of extra work on breakouts as well as a variety of other hard-skating drills. The players went at it full speed and got a good 90 minute workout in under their belts.
At the end of practice, they ran a shootout drill in which the players split up into different groups. If the shooter made his shot, then his group did not have to skate. If he missed, of course he skated with his group. The usual suspects were successful as Ray Whitney and Jussi Jokinen were included in the finals. But Aaron Ward, Rod Brind`Amour and Joe Corvo made some nice moves as well.
There was a lot of whooping and yelling when newcomer Alex "Pico" Picard took his turn, but the defenseman missed high on his attempt.
Manny Legace and practice goaltender, Jorge Alvarez were between the pipes. Previously injured Scott Walker and Chad LaRose participated fully in practice and looked good to go. Erik Cole wore the yellow, "don't touch me" jersey and there is no update on his status.
After practice was completed, I had the opportunity to ask a few of the players who they felt would win gold this weekend. If you know where the players are from, their answers are not very surprising.
Brandon Sutter: Obviously, I'm pulling for Canada. I think they will win it. (Sutter went home to Alberta over the break to relax with family).
Joe Corvo: USA, all the way.
Aaron Ward: You have three teams with a legitimate chance to win it all, USA, Finland, and Canada. Slovakia is good, but I don't think they have much of a chance. Any of those three could win. Canada is a completely different team now than they were in their first two games. USA is undefeated and has confidence going for them. Finland has an overall solid team. But If I have to choose, I'm going to say that USA gets by Canada in the final.
Patrick Dwyer: I think it will be a USA/Canada final and it could go either way. I'd like to see USA win it though.
Erik Cole: Pick one? I can't pick. But I am hoping that USA wins.
Manny Legace: I'm pulling for Canada.
Jussi Jokinen: I like Finland's chances.
Andrew Alberts: What time is that game on this afternoon, 3? It's going to be good, I will be laying on the couch, watching that one. Finland has a very good team, but USA will out-work anybody. I think they will win it today and go all the way against Canada.
Tripp Tracy: It amazes me the parity of hockey players in the world, and not just in the NHL. There are just so many good players out there. But I think Canada will win gold.
_____
The team is off Saturday but will be back on the ice at the Rec Zone, Sunday at 11.
We will be using this article for the open game thread for both semi-final games today unless it gets too big, then we will create another one.

For some reason my cable went down so I was on delay with the online feed until it rebooted.
That has to be the stupidest play I’ve ever seen from a goalie. WOW

Geez- I come home early to see most of the game and I’ve already missed it! Was funny- on a break on XM’s Power Play it went from 3-0 to 6-0 and I could almost hear Scotty shake his head as he gave the update.
Maybe some of “anything you can do I can do better” here from our guys?

wow. I was in Kinston at quater after puck drop and I called a friend and we had just made it 1-0. I finally get into New Bern and turn on ESPN Radio and find out we are up 6-0!!!. This is crazy. So Kipper pulled his self out of net???? It’s a good thing this is the Olympics and not the regular season or we’d see another Patty Roy incident.
Now all we need is a goal from Tim.

I, along with many of you, felt the Finns had a very good squad comming into the Olympics. Hopefully they can redeem theirselves against the Slovaks (I know, they haven’t played yet,but still). This is the type of game we need to play before we go up against a hot canadian team.
My first hope was that we win this game.
My second hope was that we won in a shootout, just to poke the selection commitee in the eye for their snubing of Jussi.
I guess aslong as we win its all good with me.
And it was while they were talking about Timmonen. Maybe the Timmo Gleasonen thing confused the hockeyfools at NBC?

you and me both apparently. In all honesty there are alot of fans in New Bern if the team is doing well. But they need a little proding.
I watched most of the play-offs last year at the Ice House and there would be 20 or more people following the game. But if i didn’t come in, no one would put on the game. So not really fans, but atleast not cold to the idea.
That is why I think the canes should play a pre-season game in Greenville and one in Wilmington. Its our team too, just most people here dont think of it that way.

Did y’alll see Tim Thomas having a strategy chat with Tim Gleason on an early break? Maybe discussing who handles the puck for dump-ins or such. Reliable Tim Gleason – Blueline go-to-guy for the Vezina winners of yesterday and today.
In a 99.9 show earlier this week, John Forslund did say that Tim the Emperor needed this experience as a young d-man coming into his prime, to push his confidence into recognizing he really was an elite defenseman. Better than an ASG for letting him see just how good he is against the best in the world. I’m really excited to see what happens with him after this, silver or gold.
And I’ll be pulling for Team Finland HUGELY tomorrow night.

Well Jen, Ummm…. that happened to remind me of the story I saw at KuklasKorner this week. Translating to the Hurricanes, I was wondering if Wake County might be showing an uptick in names like Timmy and Tuomo.
The appearance of Jonny Ericsson on our roster last spring was hailed by Red Wings fans around the world as a momentous event. The men recognized his potential as a franchise defenceman. The women praised his handsome looks and swooned in a way not seen since Beatlemania. What you may not know is Jonny Ericsson is not only a defenceman, he is also a fertility god.

They are supposedly “working on it”. The other sports blogs have it so you can choose from them within the editor, just like the AP photos, but the hockey blogs are lacking for now. They will probably fix it after the Olympics.
The main SBN site uses them, you can see if they have any you want and I might be able to get it from them.

Quotes after the game from many players on both USA and Finland here. None from our boys. Selanne’s comments are painful.
From Ron Wilson:
I love the way our defense . . . all seven defensemen did a great job with their sticks closing out the Finns when they got into our zone.
Our team has been focused right from the get-go. We’ve got three or four really quality leaders and young guys that are learning what it takes to be a leader….
I just love our discipline throughout this tourney. We haven’t ever hit back at somebody, or retaliated to any slight. We’ve turned our cheek and it’s been to the team’s benefit.
U S A ! U S A ! U S A ! U S A !
I’m a fan of Teemu and yep, that’s painful. Knowing this was his last chance for gold is really sad. He’s been such a strong force in the Olympics for so many years. But, on the bright side, unlike the NHL playoffs, his team still has the chance to go out and end their Games (and end his Olympic career) on a positive note with a win tomorrow.

This game is also going to get ugly. Probably a 5 to 1 game or so.

Ovechkin and the current Caps rank up there with all of the other teams and players I grew up hating (Duke, Dallas Cowboys, Boston Red Sox specifically). As much as I hate them, I enjoy watching them play just so I can cheer against them and watch them lose. There is no other reason for it other than they are always so damn good.

Also Canada may be some boatload of Gleason Love
Canada does best when its players are delivering the hits and skating downhill. When they faced Team USA, some of the key Team Canada players backed down. Staal did not, which I found interesting. It should be a great game. I expect Gleason to be Santa Claus dishing out a boatload of Gleason love on the ice to anybody who gets close to him. I think this game will be the essence of who wants it more.
I was just over watching video at Yahoo!Sports with Puck Daddy and Kenny Daneyko. Interesting talk. They kept saying that Miller is the key to beating the US so look for Canada to try to get in face, limit his looks, get under his skin. I’m thinking: Not with Tim Gleason on patrol.

I’m a little nervous for our Finns tonight. if they play like they did against the US the Slovakians are gonna kill them. It would be nice for the Finns to win so all our players get a medal.
Curling is like HOCKEY......without goals, hockey sticks, and hockey players.
yea that would be nice. i think the Finns biggest problem though is between the pipes.

Y know, that was the first “early” game for Finland (noon PST). Maybe they really weren’t awake yet.
On Sunday, game starts early again. The Americans have that time down. The Canadians haven’t played then either. Routine is important, and we’re gonna have it.

Gaborik. Hossa. Chara. Right there are three players on the Slovakian roster that are probably better than any of the individual players on Team Finland IMO. It’s going to be a tough, tough game. I’m nervous for them too.
In reading some of the post-game comments from players like Teemu, they just got shell-shocked from that first turnover/goal and never recovered. I suspect the Finns will dig deep and come out with a lot of emotion for what is certainly Teemu’s last Olympic game.
My opinion is that Finland’s biggest weakness isn’t between the pipes, it’s behind the bench. Just sayin.
Wonder who they’ll start in net?

i think Backstrom looked a little more on top of his game yesterday. well, more than Kippers. i would expect Backstrom, unless Kippers decides to be whinny about it, which would not surprise me

I saw a couple writers saying that the Finn coach said he was going with Kiprusoff, but something about the way he said it was odd. (like he wasn’t really sure, but had no choice)
WSJ.com had the most difficult headline on the US-Finland game (difficult if you love the Finns)
Like Shooting Finns in a Barrel
Tonight’s game will be interesting. The Slovaks seemed content to have made it to the final 4 and are definitely the Cinderellas. Nothing to lose at this point. The Finns are more the storied warhorses, wanting to prove they still have the wheels to win, but with doubt (or fatigue) seeming to get the better of them. Reminds me of the Canes last Oct/Nov. If the Finns manage to get their mojo back this will be a tremendous game.

I agree with you except for one thing. They need to get their sisu back, not their mojo ;-)
But Mr. Kessel apparently rushed Mr. Kiprusoff, who got rid of the puck early. American Ryan Malone, also blazing down the ice, intercepted the pass and snapped it past the out-of-position Mr. Kiprusoff, putting the U.S. up 1-0. “We were socked after that,” Finland coach Jukka Jalonen said.
There were still 58 minutes left to play, COACH. If you had that attitude, how do you think it translated to the players?
And not to beat the dead horse – AGAIN – but the statement about the USA being young and fast versus Finland being old and slow just reinforces the bad roster decisions in the first place (Peltonen versus Jussi).
Can you tell at this stage I’m letting my bitterness come out?
Slovakia’s not the US, thankS God, hopefully the Lions will match up a little better against them.

You’re right. Sisu is so much more fitting. I went over to check on that Finnish blogger(seems to be a TV station’s sports blog). Like you, he lays yesterday’s disaster vs USA completely at the feet of the coach: Link
about Finland’s coaching:
"Why, it seemed that just about every one of Lion cubs appeared to be nervous to the point that no one found the right fit and the skating was stiffer than an elephant could do? Coach Jukka Jalonen “wisdom” seems to have had a paralyzing effect."
Lion cubs and elephants on skates. Colorful and effective in any language.

Ooh! Good finds!
“Just so you know”… YLE is the national broadcast company of Finland. Kind of like their version of the BBC. MTV3 is their largest (not sure if there are others or how many) commercial TV station. HS, or Helsingin Sanamat, is the largest subscription newspaper in Finland.
Amazing what you can learn in the off-season when you’re bored and desperate for news.
I found a couple of translators that are actually a tad more accurate than Google translate, and there are “tricks” that you can do to break up sentences and words to get a little more clarity on the translation, but Google translate is so darn funny it’s seldom worth the extra work!
hahahahaha
(and yes, the reality of how Finn-obsessed I am hits hard with this post)

I’m catching on. I searched “Jussi Jokinen” and got a whole bunch of articles on him not making the oly team.
This was interesting (following the last game vs Brodeur and NJD, prior to the break)
Headline: Jussi Jokinen knuckles while voters in two Olympic gold paint
Carolina’s Finnish striker Jussi Jokinen is full of beans NHL ice hockey league.

An Excellent Article on Staal; Quotes Jim Rutherford Extensively
This is an excellent article on Staal. Jim Rutherford is quoted extensively. I think Staal has been playing some amazing hockey for Team Canada. I think he could be a dominant player tomorrow. My guess is that he and Crosby have had some conversation about Whitney. Crosby is seeing how much he could use a winger with hands and scoring touch.

Ahhh…. THIS is the post-game interview I’ve been waiting for.
Forgive the language but this is how it pulled straight from Google translator. I thought it appropriate.
Tuomo Ruutu wants to take bad taste out of his mouth
The attacker did not blame the U.S. loss of a great goalkeeper.
Olympic finalist speaks of the way the lions stood up in just over 12 minutes, when the U.S. led to a crushing 6-0.
Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was maalilta three-fight after the game at 4-0, and Niklas Backstrom let two of the nine shot win.
- No, this loss was not off goalkeepers stick, lost the team. The goalkeeper is not a fault if we allow our opponents to be free of sticks in front of goal, or if we lose the reels in your area. Anyone can look in the mirror, Tuomo Ruutu said.
USA’s rapid opening to score (2.04) paralyzed the lions, and after the ride was cold.
- There should not have been crippling to us, because the game was 58 minutes remaining. To win in any case should have been done at least one of the goals, and if we had done it to the place, the game would have been 1-1, Ruutu said.
The game comes with a bronze on Saturday night. Now, it is about this group is able to accumulate themselves or not.
- That shit taste in the mouth can not leave, we will try until the end, Ruutu said.

I really hope they start tonight like Gorillas out of a cage. Ruutu leading the charge of the next generation of Finland’s stars. I want him coming home to Raleigh with a big Ruu smile.
