Team Finland vs. Team Slovakia -- Battle For The Bronze: Open Thread
Can Team Finland overcome the mistakes of their coaching staff and selection committee? Some might say that if your country does not bother to bring their best players with them to the Olympics, they don't deserve to win.
Jussi Jokinen is watching this game from his home in Raleigh and there is no doubt in anyone's mind who is familiar with this player, that he truly deserved to be in this Olympics.
Then there is the report that goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff dictated playing terms to his coaching staff, telling them that unless he started, he would not participate in these games. Is this how you run an Olympic program?
Can Teemu Selanne, who is the all-time leading scorer in Olympics history, help his team to overcome these obstacles? Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen will certainly do all they can to win bronze.
Team Slovakia put on a tremendous last ditch effort against Canada last night and is a great team in their own right. But there was a report earlier today that Marian Gaborik was hurt and might not play this game. If he does play, he will be less than 100%.
Still, Zdeno Chara and company will not go quietly into the night. It should be a good one.

My heart broke when they left Jussi off the roster. Then it broke again when Tuomo hurt his shoulder and I thought he might not get his chance either. Then it broke again when I realized that Jussi stood his best chance of making the roster if Tuomo couldn’t. Then it broke again during the first period of yesterday’s game.
I hope Joni and Tuomo both play the game of their lives tonight, for themselves, for their country, and for their friend.

You know, one of these days I should do that. I took an 8×10 of the above picture to the Season Ticket Holder event and had all three of them sign it and I think they all actually enjoyed seeing it.
Tuomo said “Wow, this is a really good picture,” to which I smiled and said “Well, thank you! You know I’ve been known to take a picture or two.” And he laughed at me.

I think they are still realizing how immensely popular the trio of them are. I don’t think very many fanbases have embraced a group like Raleigh has embraced their Finns.
And for the record, this picture is the one I was talking about:

CC, sorry I didn’t see your post until now. Above link is to the original FanPost and link to my flickr album from the event.
During training camp the Finnish version of Sports Illustrated was in town, they were going all over the country profiling their Finnish NHL players. The Canes actually arranged for a group of well-known tailgaters to set up a tailgate party in the RBC Center parking lot for the shoot for our Finns, and it was an awesome event. I wasn’t part of the actual tailgate but a few of my friends were, but I got to document it which was just as much fun!

I know this is water under the bridge, but it actually makes me feel better to read about others in Finland who support Jussi the way we do. Now that I’ve tackled all the Finnish oly sites, I found the 12/30/09 roster announcement leaving Jussi’s name off. Headline reads:
National ice hockey team head coach Jukka Jalonen took with Ville Peltonen and Jarkko Immonen their team to the Olympics in Vancouver. This means that such winger Jussi Jokinen from Carolina is not space on the team
Some reader comments:
- Really a shame not to Jussi Jokinen is listed
- but then I miss Jussi just as many others have mentioned …
- Jussi Jokinen should probably be with!
- Jussi Jokinen is, of course one of our best NHL players … why??
- jussi has 25 points in Carolina, he o Ruutu has done so that Carolina has won a few games o the points made in a bottenlag. While Peltonen made up 5 points as he played last with Florida ….. This ruined the day and maybe a small chance of a medal in the Olympics ….
And on and on and on for dozens of posts – at least 90 % questioning why the coach (not a GM?) didn’t name Jussi. (And I love how they call him Jussi too)

Here’s their big blogger Martin Palm (it’s in Swedish it seems) devoting an entire post after the roster was announced trying to figure out (and without success) how Jussi’s name left off.
I do not know how Jalonen reasoning, but his decision may well have to do with the speed of the tubes. Jokinen is not the fastest player and then head coach apparently wanted to have a half speed Ville Peltonen, Jarkko Ruutu, Niko Kapanen and Jere Lehtinen thought he was well aware that he could not afford to take even a man who does not exactly have the wind at his back?
So instead he chose Jussi J. Antti Miettinen, although he made nearly 50 percent fewer points than the omission. (Miettinen has 9 +8), Jokinen 11 +14).

Haha no this was Burke in all his on-air swearing, truculence wishing, sandpaper personality glory.
It was a pretty decent interview. He said that through the first 3 games, he thought they had about 10 guys plus Miller carrying the team and he blasted the team on purpose because he was worried about what would happen in the next round. They asked him about how they decided to have Miller start and he said that it was the only roster decision that didn’t almost turn into a fist fight.
When he was asked about his son, he teared up and said that this tournament gave him a reason to get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other every day. He said you try to cry a little less every day and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Needless to say, I had to go find a tissue.

I don’t know why burke is so disliked around the web circles. I must have missed something. I like the guy. He reminds me of old wrestling coach for some reason. There are times I find him refreshing in this overly sensitized (sp), politically correct world that often oppresses individuality.

Another interview, and more photos, this one courtesy of Keskisuomalainen (KSML), another Finnish newspaper.
Tuomo interview (roughly translated)
Tuomo Ruutu assures they know how to celebrate
Tuomo Ruutu believe they know how to take joy out of the Olympic ice hockey bronze medal.
- I celebrated a few times in the past, it does not really have anything new. Just need to have fun, yes, you know, he celebrates winning bronze after the match.
Lion-striker Ruutu generously praised his teammates, Slovakia in the aftermath of the game. He praised the ruling Olli Jokinen scored and made the perfect torjunutta goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.
- Olli is a goalscorer and a world-class player. An incredible game from him, he really stepped up.
- Kiprusoff in turn, is one of the world’s best goalkeepers. USA-talk after the game that he failed, but yes it was more the fact that the team played poorly. All they saw how she pushed against Slovakia. He had a big part of it that we got a bronze medal, Ruutu remarked.
He also brought up the lions menetyksekkäässä the importance of experienced players in the tournament.
- I am proud to be part of this team and have the opportunity to play with these more experienced players such as Jeren (Lehtinen), Ville (Peltonen), Saku (Koivu) and Teemu (Selanne) with. They uhrautuivat fine brass playing. For example, in the third round, they threw themselves in front of shots and fought anyway exemplary screen praised.
Screen summary of lions in Vancouver was a resounding performance.
- We have earned the final place, but the tournament would have gone worse. It’s not every day for Finland and for me that we will achieve a bronze medal.
