Tim Gleason To Make USA Olympic Team
The information is being confirmed all over the internet, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason will make TEAM USA and will represent the United States in the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver. The official press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. today.
We would like to thank the folk who have been sending us emails over the past few days to inform us about this, but we needed to make sure the appointment was confirmed before making the official announcement.
Canes Country has been promoting Gleason to make the team since before the selection committee announced the original selections on New Year's Day, so the news really comes as no surprise and is very well deserved.
It will also be announced that Ryan Whitney will join the team, as he and Gleason will fill in for the injured Paul Martin and Mike Komisarek. Good luck and get well soon to both Martin and Komisarek, injuries are a tough way to miss out on this opportunity.
We will have more about this as the story unfolds. Congratulations to Gleason!

Excellent – Shawn Roarke at NHL.com who covers the Olympics there just posted this on Tim and Whitney, on his blog.
The Olympics just got a lot more interesting to me. Just worried about Ruutu (and Jussi?) now.

Hopefully make your February a great experience. Now you have to post the link for us to buy the Gleason Team USA jersey you’ve been tantalizing us with the last couple weeks.

I’m hearing the USA jerseys available for personalization are in very limited supply from Nike, so pickin’s before the Olympics may be slim.
If you have a site that has them, please share as Mr. LTD wants a jersey!
I heard he’ll be wearing #4 on the roster?

I spoke with the Nike Hockey directly. They will NOT personalize a jersey with a professional players name. I actually ordered one of the Alternate 3rd Jerseys that the team will be playing in once. I am trying to find a place that will personalize it. There are some businesses that specialize in customization. I will keep you guys posted if I find anything.
Anyone know if The Eye is selling Olympic Team Sweaters?

Word I’m hearing is t-shirts only for now. Overall Nike’s very backlogged on the jerseys so supply is limited across most sources especially with personalization.

How much do think the clamor from Carolina – from Rutherford, Chuck Kaiton in his interview with Burke in Toronto, the N&O, and from the folks and fans at Canes Country (Cory’s piece) and other sites drew attention to the oversight?
He was a dark horse, with no mention in most of the speculation outside of Carolina, until the last couple weeks.

He did attend the team USA camp in the summer. I wouldn’t say he was a dark horse.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
All the talk I saw over the last month (typical story here) was about Ryan Whitney, Hainsey, Bogosian, maybe Scuderi or Bollard – never Gleason, til pretty recently. Because the Canes were #30, it seemed like no one thought to include Gleason.. If you’re 6th or 7th down the list when they only expected one replacement needed for Martin, I’d describe that as a dark horse. Just my take.

I mean, I guess he was a dark horse in the sense that he is certainly no Jack Johnson.
I could barely even type that without laughing.
Wouldn’t be strange if they’re paired together?

Zero.
No offense, but Burke doesn’t take his leads from team broadcasters, mainstream media, or blogs. Anyone who does that shouldn’t have either of his positions.
I’m sure he and Rutherford had discussions about Gleason’s play, but they’re both professionals.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
I wasn’t thinking Burke was taking leads, but more like drawing some support for a direction he said he already wanted to go….(when he spoke to Kaiton and said he was out-voted)

So I’m imagining Gleason on the ice vs Staal or Ruutu (crosses fingers) or opposite Pitkanen. Especially crease battles with Staal in front of Miller.

Needless to say that Timmy vs. Tuomo was my FIRST thought! LOL Chip just tweeted that Tuomo may be able to be back on Saturday (and Tlusty has been sent back to Albany so someone must be coming into the lineup?).
Anyhow, Timmy talked about playing against his teammates in his 99.9 interview. Already saying “Eric who?” like he’s never heard of the guy.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but this sounds like JJ won’t be playing. (this all based on the assumption that kausatoday is being sarcastic)
kausatoday
Los Angeles Kings D Jack Johnson is flying to Vancouver to march in opening Olympic ceremony and then flying back. This is why we admire JJ.
He's not being sarcastic.
Johnson is flying up Friday morning for the ceremony that night, flying back for LA’s Saturday night home game, then flying back up for the Olympics.
I’d admire any other player that was doing that, but it’s Jack Johnson, so eff him.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

Branecky just posted a great story on it here.
My favorite quote:
"He’s not chatty," said Burke, who worked with Gleason while GM of last summer’s American entry at the IIHF World Championship. "Your worst nightmare might be to get stuck in a fishing boat with Tim Gleason for an afternoon."
Actually, I can think much worse things…

I think they said this was taken in the summer 2005, before he came to Carolina. He sure has more battle scars to show now.

I know a few Cane fans that would disagree with Burke on the stuck on a boat for the afternoon part.

I think he was doing his tough guy routine. You know he can be very funny – but not on national television/radio. Better be cool than a fool.

You might be right the Canes interview and the 99.9 the fan interview he was much better.
Staal + Jussi = GOAL
My favorite line – and I’ll paraphrase – from the NHLNetwork interview was when they asked him if it would be difficult after the Olympics to lay a big hit on a former Team USA teammate (I’ll give an example: Parise) when they returned to NHL play, and back on opposing teams. He answered without missing a beat, almost like it was stupid question: “No , I don’t have a problem with that.”
Kinda like his comments about Staal-who?

That was good – but it was when he was loosened up by Maniscalco . I also like the “no pressure” line about his parents buying their tickets 6 months ago – with security! (not sure what that means?) going with another couple whether or not he was on the team, but the expectations were understood…..

Not sure what security means either, but he mentioned it almost every interview I’ve listened to. Love that his first phone call was to his parents though. I couldn’t see it happening any other way with him.

I think he’s referring to “security” like trip insurance. Like maybe with an out clause on your purchase under certain conditions.

So proud for Timmy! A very well-deserved honor.
Just listened to his interview on the way home on 99.9. Says his foot is 110% (from last night’s game) and sounds like he’s expecting a few pranks over the next couple of days and is looking forward to facing a couple of teammates in foreign jerseys (he’s like Eric who?) LOL

Oh, one other thing on the 99.9 interview. Timmy said his parents and another couple had already bought tickets for the Olympics months ago so they will be there. He said of course that put no pressure on him.

Not to take anything away from Timmy, but Kovalchuk is going to be a NJ Devil apparently.

Kovalchuk Trade
to NJ is GREAT news. Hopefully Washington, Boston, NY, Pittsburgh, and the Senators start freaking out and calling us up about Whitney. I’d be willing to bet JR is getting flooded with calls today/tomorrow from all the Kovalchuk Sweepstakes losers.
Just what I was thinking. Perfect timing that it happened now. JR can wait, and wait, and wait now until the draft deadline, and get the full amount for now the best forward on the market.
Just sucks now to have to see that guy as a devil…. oh, wait, he was already one.

Atlanta
I would be surprised if Atlanta wasn’t one of the teams calling us about Whitney. I would love to have their first round pick (likely a top 20 pick). Plus they lost their only real scoring with Kovalchuk leaving and didn’t really get any in return.
And why not? They are close to home, they are desperate to make the playoffs, and they need scoring.
Do we know what # he will wear yet?
Also, kind of bummed about the Team USA jerseys, kind of boring…

this is the alternate “third jersey” don’t really know why they need one but it’s much nicer than the other 2
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
from what I have read about this jersey, this is the alternate 3rd. its a replica/throwback of the 1960 jersey (we all know what happened that year). It will be worn once during the olympics. I actually bought one and it is amazing!
It took Mr. LTD about 1/2 a second after seeing that version of the jersey to click the link and order his.
