Tim Gleason To Make USA Olympic Team

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason (photo by LTD)

The information is being confirmed all over the internet, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason will make TEAM USA and will represent the United States in the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver.  The official press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. today.

We would like to thank the folk who have been sending us emails over the past few days to inform us about this, but we needed to make sure the appointment was confirmed before making the official announcement.

Canes Country has been promoting Gleason to make the team since before the selection committee announced the original selections on New Year's Day, so the news really comes as no surprise and is very well deserved.

It will also be announced that Ryan Whitney will join the team, as he and Gleason will fill in for the injured Paul Martin and Mike Komisarek.  Good luck and get well soon to both Martin and Komisarek, injuries are a tough way to miss out on this opportunity.

We will have more about this as the story unfolds.  Congratulations to Gleason!

Excellent – Shawn Roarke at NHL.com who covers the Olympics there just posted this on Tim and Whitney, on his blog.

The Olympics just got a lot more interesting to me. Just worried about Ruutu (and Jussi?) now.

I’m hearing the USA jerseys available for personalization are in very limited supply from Nike, so pickin’s before the Olympics may be slim.

If you have a site that has them, please share as Mr. LTD wants a jersey!

I heard he’ll be wearing #4 on the roster?

I spoke with the Nike Hockey directly. They will NOT personalize a jersey with a professional players name. I actually ordered one of the Alternate 3rd Jerseys that the team will be playing in once. I am trying to find a place that will personalize it. There are some businesses that specialize in customization. I will keep you guys posted if I find anything.

I still don’t see the US doing very well in the Olympics. But at least they can bang now.

Word I’m hearing is t-shirts only for now. Overall Nike’s very backlogged on the jerseys so supply is limited across most sources especially with personalization.

How much do think the clamor from Carolina – from Rutherford, Chuck Kaiton in his interview with Burke in Toronto, the N&O, and from the folks and fans at Canes Country (Cory’s piece) and other sites drew attention to the oversight?

He was a dark horse, with no mention in most of the speculation outside of Carolina, until the last couple weeks.

He should have been considered long before some of these other guys were named to the team. Ryan Whitney? Are you freakin serious?

Tell me if he will take a puck to the face and come back to the game from that. I doubt it.

All the talk I saw over the last month (typical story here) was about Ryan Whitney, Hainsey, Bogosian, maybe Scuderi or Bollard – never Gleason, til pretty recently. Because the Canes were #30, it seemed like no one thought to include Gleason.. If you’re 6th or 7th down the list when they only expected one replacement needed for Martin, I’d describe that as a dark horse. Just my take.

Zero.

No offense, but Burke doesn’t take his leads from team broadcasters, mainstream media, or blogs. Anyone who does that shouldn’t have either of his positions.

I’m sure he and Rutherford had discussions about Gleason’s play, but they’re both professionals.

That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

by JoshCVT on Feb 4, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t thinking Burke was taking leads, but more like drawing some support for a direction he said he already wanted to go….(when he spoke to Kaiton and said he was out-voted)

I’m thinking that the coach’s vote carried a bit more weight when it came down to picking the last couple of injury replacements.

Maybe he was “out-voted” initially, but listened to more carefully recently and given the talent he requested.

My favorite line – and I’ll paraphrase – from the NHLNetwork interview was when they asked him if it would be difficult after the Olympics to lay a big hit on a former Team USA teammate (I’ll give an example: Parise) when they returned to NHL play, and back on opposing teams. He answered without missing a beat, almost like it was stupid question: “No , I don’t have a problem with that.”

That was good – but it was when he was loosened up by Maniscalco . I also like the “no pressure” line about his parents buying their tickets 6 months ago – with security! (not sure what that means?) going with another couple whether or not he was on the team, but the expectations were understood…..

I would be surprised if Atlanta wasn’t one of the teams calling us about Whitney. I would love to have their first round pick (likely a top 20 pick). Plus they lost their only real scoring with Kovalchuk leaving and didn’t really get any in return.

from what I have read about this jersey, this is the alternate 3rd. its a replica/throwback of the 1960 jersey (we all know what happened that year). It will be worn once during the olympics. I actually bought one and it is amazing!

It took Mr. LTD about 1/2 a second after seeing that version of the jersey to click the link and order his.

I didn’t notice this before, but it even has the old school laces at the neck!

I got Cyn4Canes an “authentic jersey of her choice” for Christmas. She still hasn’t finished deciding what she’s getting. Timmy making the Olympic team is not helping. =)

Good thing I have a birthday coming up in a few months. :)

Have you looked at the details, though. The sleeve has wording on it and there’s an image overlay on the rest of the jersey. Makes it a little more interesting.
