Dream Trades?
Here's mine: Brindy, A. Ward, and Whitney to Penguins for Jordan Staal, with Whitney coming back next season.
Second version could be Pitkanen to Pens for Jordan Staal and 2 second-round picks, then Whitney as a rental to Boston for a first rounder.
I've heard people sounding-off on how we need to keep Pitkanen, which I'm not sure I agree with based solely on his ability to get us major trade material. If we are truly in rebuilding mode, we can't pick and choose and do it half-assed, we need to go all out.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

That's a dream all right!!
We’d have to give Whitney, Cullen and a legit prospect like Boychuk to get Staal.

My Most Recent Dream Trade
Trade Boychuk to the Rangers in exchange for Marc Staal. Also the teams would swap 2nd round picks.
This would give NYR a high level offensive prospect and most likely a better 2nd round pick. They have plenty of young defenseman that could possibly fill Staal’s spot on the blueline. Also, Marc is a RFA and would be due some sort of raise which the Rangers will have trouble with due to their cap situation.
The Canes would get a young stay-at-home defenseman that could be paired with Pitkanen and probably a middle of the round 2nd. Boychuk would be a loss, but the organization has a couple of young left wingers. Also, if the Canes trade Whitney to Pittsburgh – they could get one of Pittsburgh’s top two LW prospects to take the place of Boychuk.
The Canes defense could be:
Pitkanen – Staal
Rodney – Gleason
Carson – Alberts

cool idea, but I would see Pitkanen/Gleason and then Carson/Staal, then maybe Alberts/Rodney

I think we will benefit to trade Jony – before it is too late
All above is my personal opinion.
Thanks,

Would take more than just Boychuk for Marc Staal. I really doubt they would make that trade before their playoff run, they would certainly need a roster player or 2 back to help them and they really need scoring as is. Maybe during the season they would take Corvo, Boychuk, and a 3rd or 4th round pick.
I think they are in cap trouble though and may not be able to keep Staal as an RFA this offseason. They also likely don’t necessarily need Staal as they have Gilroy, Del Zotto, and Sanguinetti in the wings while contracts like Redden and Rozsival would be impossible for them to move. Much more likely might be an off-season trade or draft day trade like: Boychuk + Roster Player (Cole, Larose, or Samsonov) + 3rd-4th rounder for Marc Staal.

I’ve read that the Rangers may try to start a rebuilding themselves and they might not be willing to make an investment in Staal. It’s all one writers opinion, but this was a dream trade anyway. I could be wrong, but I don’t think it would take a prospect, roster player, and draft pick to get Staal away from them.
I wouldn’t mind swaping 2nd round picks, giving them Boychuk and the rights to Babchuk for M. Staal.

I mean I know we all like Boychuk and he certainly has a great reputation in Canada because he was a national hero for team Cananda in Juniors. However I do not think other teams see him as valuable as we do. He hasn’t really knocked anyone’s socks off in the AHL and he is kind of smallish which many GMs stray away from.
Granted I think he has value, but I don’t think it’s anywhere close to Marc Staal’s value. Like I said I agree that NY probably doesn’t view Staal as an “untouchable who you would be foolish to even make an offer on” as they probably have the best young defensive depth in the NHL. Not to mention they really might not be able to afford to re-sign Marc to a $3-4 million a year contract when they have all those cheap, young D as well as Redden and Rozsival who make outlandish salaries ($5 and $6.5 million a year respectively).
If the Rangers put him up on the trade block I am sure they would get plenty of offers and the price would be driven up drastically.

I think Rutherford has said a couple times that Brindy will not be traded.
Assuming JR will unload all he can ,here’s my dream trade scenario, including how to bring all the Staal bros to Raleigh :-)
Cullen for Cam Barker
Then trade Barker and Babchuk rights to NYR for M.Staal and a 4rd round pick
Wallin for a 2nd rounder seems too good to be true, but I’ll take it
Whitney and a 2nd rounder (from SJ) to Pitts for Jordan Staal
A.Ward to PHX for Jared Staal
Samsonov and a conditional pick to Vancouver for Jordan Schroeder
Corvo to Nashville for Zach Budish and a 3rd rounder

Zach Budish
I think the Hurricanes would be quite well-served to work out a trade for Zach Budish. He is still a project; but he has enormous upside potential.
by abramsdoug on Feb 5, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
When they moved Paradis, who was a project, for Tlusty I think it signaled that the Canes are not right now willing to take on projects. Although Paradis had slipped somewhat and there was some grumbling that he wasn’t fond of Raleigh, so it could have been a situation where the Canes sold when they could to get whatever they could.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!

I agree on the project side, but Paradis also hasn’t doing so hot in the Q while Budish seems to be having a better time with the Gophers. I think more of a project than Budish is Jared Staal.

I’d trade Pitkanen for Tomas Kaberle.
Go Canes!

Whaat? Trade Pitkanen for an older version of Pitkanen?
by JussiJuice on Feb 6, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
For a d-man who isn't afraid to play defense
And Kaberle plays defense VERY well. Pitkanen, no so much lately.
Go Canes!

He’s 26. Why is this logic not applied to anyone else on the team? If we’re going to go all out on a re-build, then I guess we should trade everyone over the age of 20.
by Kahz on Feb 6, 2010 10:50 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Everyone’s opinion varies, but I don’t think we need a full “re-build.” I think this team has pieces that can allow us to compete for the playoffs. I think we need more of a “re-load” than a “re-build.” With that being said, we need to hold on to certain pieces of value. If we trade Pitkanen, we have no defenseman that can carry the puck. If we can add to a good young defenseman and another scoring threat, we should be able to be a middle of the road Eastern Conference playoff team. In all honesty, that is what we should expect. We are never going to spend enough money to consistently be a top 2 or 3 team. If we are in the 4, 5, or 6 range in the East and we can make a playoff run every couple of years; I think that is what I expect of the Carolina Hurricanes.

WE ARE A LAST PLACE TEAM
we don’t need a full re-build? what, will a reload get us to the third-worst team in the league? reality is reality — our team is old and slow, and needs an overhaul.
by Capt. Stinky on Feb 8, 2010 8:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And we were in the ECF last year with the exact same team. Our overhaul is coming this off-season… All our old and slow guys will be leaving. Walker, A. Ward, Yelle, and almost certainly Brind’Amour (through retirement). Wallin just got traded and won’t be back. Any number of Whitney, Cullen, and Corvo could be gone.
Depending on who we pick up, trade for, re-sign, and bring up from the Rats next season we could be one of the youngest teams in the league lead by young NHL Stars Eric Staal, Cam Ward, and future Star Hall/Seguin/Fowler. I think we could easily be a playoff team next year.
by JussiJuice on Feb 8, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Capt. Stinky – look at our list of contracts. Most of the old guys have expiring contracts. The only guys over 30 left would be Brind’Amour (who might retire), Cole (who’s nagging injuries make him impossible to move), Samsonov (who’s contract will be difficult to move), and Kostopoulos (who is playing quite well). The rest of the team is still young and will only get younger. YOU WANT TO BLOW THAT UP? That is why I said a “re-load” instead of a “re-build!” Edmonton needs to re-build, we don’t IMO.
We need to add a scoring winger, a solid 2nd/3rd line center, and a top 4 defenseman. If we do that, we should be back in the playoffs and probably the 4th or 5th best team in the East. And that would be considered a “re-load.”

"If we trade Pitkanen, we have no defenseman that can carry the puck."
Yo, everyone, please extend your memories about 5 years past. We actually won the silver things without one of these ever loving, oft mentioned puck carrying defensemen. So, this argument is lost on me. Always will be. I abhor this premise.
We need puck PASSING defensemen, or as Whitney once said on “Ask the Canes”:
“He defense, I’m open on the wing, pass me the puck, ON MY STICK!”
The primary purpose of a de-man is defense. One of the reason’s I’m a bit miffed at Pitkanen of late is that he seems to have forgotten this. His defense if slipping.
Go Canes!

Beg to differ. We had a couple of puck-moving defensemen in ‘05-’06, as well, by the name of Bret Hedican and Frantisek Kaberle.
They’re essential items. Takes all kinds to build a team, including them.

"He defense, I’m open on the wing, pass me the puck, ON MY STICK!"
And this was said by Whitney in jest, because he was admitting out loud that he’s one of the worst offenders of someone that used to cheat quite a bit offensively, stretching the gap between defensive passer and offense to the breaking point.
He’s been reeled back in lately, and with better gap control, our movement up the ice and into their zone has gotten much, much better.

Full Re-Build is Unnecessary
I agree with PackPride17 that the Hurricanes do not need to tear down the house and start over with a full rebuild. The team has played well over the past twenty or twenty-five games. The start of the season was truly abysmal; but the worst problems came from veterans who did not have the skill sets to play well under the defensive system set up by Maurice/Francis/Rowe or at least were not willing at the start of the season to abide by the system. Once the Albany Rats were brought up and given time on the ice, the Hurricanes were vastly more successful. The core team is neither old nor slow; and I think Jim Rutherford will likely have last minute trades before the Olympic Break freeze in trades. Wallin’s trade is an important step forward for the team. If Aaron Ward could also be traded soon, that too would help the team’s transformation.

never said age was an issue, just his potential to get us a great return in a trade.
