Justin Peters Recalled From Albany

The Carolina Hurricanes just announced the recall of goaltender Justin Peters from the Albany River Rats.   This will be the fifth career recall for the 23 year old, but he has yet to see NHL action.  Peters is 18-13-2 this year with the Rats and has a GAA of 2.55 with a save percentage of .916.

This move leads to the question, why?  Could Manny Legace be on his way out in a possible deal?  Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

UPDATE:  Cam Ward has an upper body injury and will return to Raleigh.

They (the Canes) didn’t mention that in the press release – only in the Tweet. oops.

according to Chip via Tweeter…Cam ward is, and Peters & Boychuk are on the way to buffalo…now i wonder if the "rumored " Wallin trade will happen today or will we all have to wait until the day before the olympics starst..hmmm the waters are getting murkier…

Huh? When did CWard get hurt? In practice? Or maybe in the Flames game and they were still determining if he could play?

Kaiton on the Buzz this morning

Kaiton talks about Wallin, says Alberts is okay.

Haven’t heard him mention Cam yet.

Great news about Alberts… Not that the playoffs are in reach, but we can’t catch a break with injuries! And of course with hockey’s vague “upper body injury” what do we suspect? Hopefully its not long term.

Next question: I’m guess Legace will start in Buffalo and maybe beyond, think we’ll get to see Justin Peters start in net soon? Would love to see this guy in NHL action.

Very interesting. I’d be willing to bet JR has been a pretty popular guy today with the Kovalchuk sweepstakes over. Let the bidding begin!

So who wants to tweet Chip and ask him if he noticed who was in net at the Canes practice today? He didn’t mention Cam wasn’t there till Bob tweeted the announcement on the Peters call-up…..?

With this season pretty much over,. it could be something incredibly minor. Also, it might be the only way to get Mo to play another goalie. Either way, I would not worry to much about this unless something incredibly weird happened the other night that we did not see.

I agree with you that it may be something really small and they just figure it’s better to send him home than have him seriously hurt himself.

I also second the “not the back” sentiments.

tin foil hat conspiracy time

could they be saying Cam has an injury in order to bring up Peters to give him a look, without having to send Legace through the wire? I don’t know the CBA kind of stuff, so there may not even be a reason to do something like that, but it was just a random thought.

by wylde4canes on Feb 5, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I have said that I fervently hope that we work the IR list so hard the remainder of this season that Gary Bettman has to personally call JR and ask him “What the heck is going on down there?!?” :-D

by Elsker on Feb 5, 2010 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

Revolving door of the IR list

Team release on the Peters callup also says that Chad LaRose has been placed on IR for an injury sustained in the Chicago game.

So, this allows Ruutu to come off IR without having to make a roster move.

Cam out

My guess for why they would rest Cam is we are basically mathematically locked out of the playoffs now and JR wants to make his charge for last place. Toronto, Columbus, and even Edmonton have looked good and all been winning games (even Edmonton surprisingly).

I think we have looked much better the past 10 games compared to earlier in the season, our scoring seems to be doing a better job, but most of the wins we got were on Cam’s back. He played pretty amazing on our latest winning streak, making up for our still questionable defense. Maybe Manny can bring similar results, but I think a lot of people are going to be mad at A-Ward after the night is through.

Tuomo Ruutu skating on Sutter line with Dwyer.

No Finn sandwiches there….? (again maybe waiting for Boychuk to come in where Tlusty was before he was sent to Albany to play during the Olympics….)

IF (big if) Mo still thinks he can field wingers for Sutter to operate a checking line that he can throw out against the opposition’s top line, then I’m going to seriously doubt that he plugs Boychuk (who is still working on his D) into that line in a one-for-one substitution pattern.

I was even looking at Ruutu’s presence there a bit askance, although he is defensively responsible.

But, if Boychuk doe appear on that line, would be interested to see if it is because Mo has at least temporarily gone back to strength-on-strength, top line against top line, for the remainder of the road trip. Might make sense as he has first change and will have a hard time getting the matchups he wants.

If so, then Sutter’s line becomes a scoring line, just like all the rest, I suppose.

by Elsker on Feb 5, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

I suspect Ruuts was just a fill-in for the lines until Boychuck arrives, so they’d have enough warm bodies to keep the other lines intact. Maurice had said previously that there was a chance he could be in the lineup tomorrow night, but Chip tweeted today that he could return next week, so I suspect that they’ll play Boychuk both nights.

Nice to see Ruutu getting some real line work on the ice and not just skating around. Hopefully he’s not too far away from returning. We miss him.

Still going to be very curious about line matchups this weekend.

Trial by fire for Boychuk, facing top lines as part of a functioning checking line?

Or, is it back to the “nesting lines” approach, where top line takes top line and each line is a clone of the others in function?

by Elsker on Feb 5, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

No one really wants to see their team tank purposely. However, these “reported” events may be what is needed to get the overhaul started. I don’t know about you, but this waiting game is getting old. I am ready to see something change that is definitive evidence of the org’s decision to transfuse the team with blood for a real future. Winning breeds winning, bug ice time breeds experience. I vote for Maurice to be gone, Rowe or Daniels to step up and a bevy of Rats to finish this season.

Times Getting More and More Interesting in Caniac Land

I keep checking twitter to see if Wallin has been in fact been traded. It is interesting that Boychuk is recalled. I hope he will have some break out games. It will also be great if Peters can get some time in goal. He has had some excellent games in Albany — along with less stellar ones on somewhat rare occasions.

I am not hearing much concrete about the Whitney, Cullen, Corvo situations. Hope springs eternal that A.Ward will become the object of some GM’s desire. Anybody hearing anything more definite about Cole’s return?

One day this mysterious back back problem is gonna bite the Canes in the ass. Same thing that happened when the NYI signed DP then long term injury problem. This team is screwed big time if something ever happens to Cam.
