Rumored trades...

So, I checked on some news stories this morning.  I am hearing some trade chatter about some of the Canes.

Now, I can understand Whitney, Cullen, Corvo, Walker and possibly Wallin being rumored, but get this...Vancouver is rumored to be after Ruutu!  RUUTU people!!  Why would Carolina trade him!??  He's popular and he's very valuable to the future, I do believe.  I also read that if not Ruutu, then Vancouver would consider Cullen.  And, they would re-sign him to an extension if this were the case.  I can see this trade happening.

So, has anyone heard anymore trade chatter???  I know Whitney has to be the biggest name on the market right now.  Hopefully, Carolina can get some good returns for the future.

Ruutu is on JR’s list of “UNTOUCHABLES” not really worried about him going anywhere

Sigh.......

I made my peace with this topic last year at the trade deadline when he was reported to be one of our most valuable trade assets and I couldn’t eat for about three days straight and had to bury my head in the sand so I wouldn’t read the blogs, and finally started breathing again when it was JWill (even though he was another of my favorites) instead.

Ruuty’s a popular player with a specialized in-demand talent and he’s a great character guy for the locker room. He’s always going to be considered an asset to other teams and is probably always going to be the subject of trade rumors. But I’m now resigned to just enjoy him as much as I can while he’s here which is the only thing I can control about the situation.

That being said, I do think JR has a crush on him that rivals mine. ;-)

I don’t think he has any intentions of letting him go anytime soon.

However…. Vancouver? That’s a pretty nice place to live. And Mr. LTD loves to ski…..

Your dedication is admirable LTD. Especially since I kinda believe you actually would move to Vancouver.

ain't gonna happen...

…and ditto for any other Cane who is signed past this this year (although Pitkanen is a possibility-for the right deal.)

Reason: the Canes will not take on any salary in any deal, and any team willing to take on salary will only want to pay for the remainder of this year. Ruutu is young, physical, has huge upside, and is signed-he ain’t goin’ anywhere!

If you're not 1st, you're last.

There are plenty of ‘Canes players signed past this season that are likely available. See Cole, LaRose, Samsonov, and Brind’amour.

laughable at best.

Ruutu is not going anywhere.

Wanting Ruutu and Getting Ruutu are very different

Virtually every team would want to trade for Ruutu; but alas for them wanting Ruutu and getting Ruutu in a trade are very, very different concepts. Ruutu is one of those rare players who combines hard-hitting, with offensive and defensive skill. Ruutu is also a natural leader on and off the ice. Jim Rutherford has been very, very specific, I think, that Ruutu is one of the untouchable players. No other NHL team would pay the king’s ransom price Jim Rutherford would demand to even consider trading Ruutu.

My Take on Who Will Be Traded

1. Ray Whitney: almost certainly to be traded at some point this year, for a first round draft pick; if not a first round draft pick and a prospect. I predict Whitney is a rental and re-signs with Carolina;

2. Joe Corvo: I predict he is traded for a first round pick right at the March deadline. If not traded, he will be re-signed by Carolina.

3. Matt Cullen: as much as I admire Cullen, I think economics are such that he will be traded soon — for at minimum a second round pick. There is a 30% to 40% chance he is re-signed after being traded.

4. Wallin: I predict Wallin’s agent, crawls on his hands and knees to San Jose and a deal is ultimately made for a second round pick. 98% chance Wallin will not be re-signed.

5. Aaron Ward — right at the buzzer (the March deadline), I predict Aaron Ward is traded for a fifth or sixth round pick. Somebody will want his experience and will feel he can perform some minutes at a playoff level. 99.99999999% chance Aaron Ward will not be re-signed.

6. Scott Walker: given his injury situation, I think there is less than a 20% chance he will be traded and only a 20% chance he will be re-signed. Walker may retire after this season.

7. Brind’Amour: if Brind’Amour wants to play a year or two more, he will need to ask the Hurricanes for a trade; otherwise, Brind’Amour retires. I think there is a 25% chance some team will take Brind’Amour at the March trade deadline to take face-offs and as a penalty killer. He is a proven leader and his experience may well justify his being taken on; however, given his contract, there is a 75% chance Brind’Amour stays with Carolina. I think there is a 90S% chance if Brind’Amour is not traded that he retires at the end of this season.

8. LaRose: I think there is a 10% to 20% chance LaRose is traded as an energy wing who can move up to the second line and who has playoff experience.

9. Samsonov: I think there is a 20% chance Samsonov is traded to a team needing a play-maker who has playoff experience and who can get hot and become a scoring threat.

Wallin -- 2nd round pick to Carolina for Wallin and 5th Round

So, #4 on the list comes to fruition. It will be fascinating to see if Whitney, Cullen, and/or Corvo are traded prior to the Olympic Break freeze.

A rumour that says a team is targeting Ruutu, but would settle for Cullen makes no logical sense.

Besides Rutuu is under contract for two? more years, and has shown himself to be a core member of this team, as well as untouchable.

Columbus as a dance partner?

Friend of mine with a blood relative within the Columbus Bluejacket org said we’ve had a scout (he named him) there for the past couple of nights.

But, then they all have to be somewhere, I suppose.

by Elsker on Feb 6, 2010 6:08 PM EST reply actions

Looks like they were playing the Stars on Thursday and the Sabres tonight, each of which could be the team(s) of interest, more so than the Bluejackets.

But we had a chance to see the Sabres up close and personal ourselves last night, so doubt they’re the target. Could be, however, someone planted for a second look at ’em.

Seems weird as Columbus is very close to being locked out of the playoffs. They have won 2 of 2 since they fired Hitchcock though so who knows.

by JussiJuice on Feb 6, 2010 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

If it is legitimate interest from them, and it wasn’t one of the visiting teams being scouted, then maybe they have entirely different motivation than a playoff bound team and just want to mix it up, possibly even with one of our contract players.

Hey, maybe they want Ray Whitney (2000-2003) back and are dangling an extension. ;-D

by Elsker on Feb 7, 2010 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

We have a late model Erik Cole that no longer has a place in our top-6 if they would be interested!
