What's Your Favorite Wallin Moment?
The season of change has finally come to Carolina. With many of the familiar faces who have been through thick and thin with us here in Canes country moving on, the times they are a changin'.
Wallin was the first in a line of loyal Hurricanes to be moved, and perhaps more of our favorite players are going to be on the move soon. Most of us can agree, there is something special about our corner of the hockey world. Players who are criticized or unwanted truly get to shine in Carolina.
And now, one of the under-appreciated guys has moved on. In honor of the "Secret Weapon," what are your favorite Wallin moments? If I missed one, comment on it. Here's my top 5:

Skate With the Canes 2007. My little boy was 5 and was learning to skate. He had his helmet on and his new skates and we went over to Wallin for an autograph. My son was focusing on his feet and didn’t see Wallin until we were right up on him. He looked at the enormous pair of skates and then looked up and up and up until he fell over on his butt. Wallin leaned down and picked him up with one hand and said something nice. My son’s face when he saw just how big Nicky is was priceless.

"Work hard...don't complain."
Voted for the incredible Miracle at Molson OT game-winner.
What a moment for him and everything Caniac.
But, when I think of Niclas Wallin, the image that springs to mind is his answer to the “Ask the Canes” segment as to “What was the best advice given to you by your parents?”.
His answer: “Work hard…don’t complain”.
He did work hard…and he didn’t complain.
What a guy. Proud to have had him as a Cane.

OT against Brodeur
Our comeback goal by Staal with 3 seconds left, capped in OT by Wallin charging the net and getting one by Marty. I have this game on DVD and watch it frequently. Awesome, baby!
Go Canes!

Back in early ‘06 when he went to pass the puck back to Gerber to set the rush, but forgot that Gerber had left to get a 6th man on from a delayed penalty call. Right in the net. He let it roll right off of his back and played the rest of the game just as he normally would. That’s what you have to have to be a good Dman in this league, a nice level head.
Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.

No option to vote for "when traded to San Jose"?
Just kidding (I really do like Nicky the person I just dont like the player).
My vote was for the Miracle at the Molsen. That game IMHO is the second greatest game in franchise history. The only one that comes close (and barley passes it up) is game 7 in the SCF. If im not mistaken that is when he bacame the “secret weapon”. I was all about Nic Wallin back then.
Good luck Nicky, I will be rooting for you this post season.

Watching Wallin hand his stick to a little girl in the stands after a game.
And I don’t know why you do like Wallin as a player. If he could have played in the 5/6 slot this year as expected, and as he will do with San Jose, then he would have looked much better.

I REALLY wish the OT winner in 2006 was my happiest memory, but I had to travel out of town for work and missed that game and was only able to listen via radio feed and to this day I’m still bitter.
My favorite Nic Wallin memories are his deadpan interviews, and watching him at practice. He was such a looming presence at practices. He was always scrimmaging hard, you definitely didn’t want to have to line up against him because he’d hit you hard. He was the bellwether for determining if a player was ready to make it back to the game lineup because sure as clockwork he’d check you into the boards just to make sure you were good to go. And he was always tackling or wrestling the other players. Not sure why, but if there was a tussle going on or a big dogpile out on the ice, he was always right in the middle of it!
Oh, and since I missed his OT GWG, I have to give a shout out to him blessing Timmy’s stick in last year’s playoffs so Timmy could get the game-winner.
:D

The OT goal in 2006
that one was the best because i actually saw it. It is amazing because if he was better forward material then he wouldn’t have scored, Broduer played that breakaway almost perfectly but wallin had such shaky handling that he bounced it right off his skate.

It was pure luck that it went in.
But it wasn’t luck that he tried the move. It’s rare to see a D-man go in on the goalie like that in the regular season. But Nic had 2 OT winners and he wanted a third. He made it happen. The Secret Weapon.

I loved when he was asked (later in the week that he scored on his own empty net) about the “own goal” he scored….
He told the story of his wife getting on his case….. it was hilarious….
