Finland Here We Come: Hurricanes Will Open 2010-11 Season Overseas
If there were ever two teams destined to play in Eastern Scandinavia, it was the Finn-stocked Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild. Turns out that's exactly where they'll be kicking off the 2010-11 season.
The NHL announced this season’s lineup for the Compuware/NHL Premiere and Faceoff, and the Canes will meet the Wild in Helsinki Oct. 7 and 8. The Hurricanes are holding a 2 p.m. press conference where Carolina owner Peter Karmanos will presumably speak about the event. Compuware, the main sponsor for the overseas games, is also owned by Karmanos.
The Blue Jackets and Sharks will meet (Oct. 8 & 9) in Stockholm, Sweden, while Boston and Phoenix are set to faceoff (Oct. 9 & 10) in Prague, Czech Republic.
Bob will be at the RBC Center and will have more details following the press conference.

With the Sharks playing in Sweden, let’s hope that Nic Wallin will be able to play for his parents and family with them in the house. I like that.

if they had waited a couple days to complete the trade, Nic might’ve conceded to a one-year deal to do just that ;)

Personally, I get everything he’s saying. But most PR people would tell you how the focus should be about how the ASG would be great for the city and the franchise, a huge honor, ect.

Exactly – sounded so manipulative and his STHers are no more than revenue to pay the bills. Exactly the opposite of what Coach Mo and JR would say. They treat the money as a minor detail in the relationship.

Greensboro was an economic black hole.
Wanting to increase the season ticket base is not a bad idea.
I missed the beginning, but I thought the Charlotte stuff was an answer to a question.
5 seconds left.
Do you believe in miracles?
YES!!
Pissing off a potential fan base by calling their city a black hole – not a great idea. He could have said it differently and it not piss folks off.
That potential fan base didn’t give a damn when the team was in their back yard. I’m sure Canes fans in Greensboro are well aware of how correct he is and probably agree with him on the subject. I can’t blame the guy for being frustrated since he probably lost tens of millions of dollars over those two years.
Maybe he thought he was on the ice trashing-talking…
1) Calling Greensboro a black hole
2) reference to stupid Canadian team in western conference
3) joke about Pittsburgh not having a building
just not very professional
The we bi-polar comment was a little rough around the edges too (As Bob just tweeted it).

Maybe we should back up. Were you not listening to the audio? ‘Cause I think everyone here is assuming you are, and are being defensive. If not, I’m not sure anyone is prepared to give a good transcript of 5 minutes of running at the mouth without thought…
Then...
I don’t know why you don’t think some of those things would perhaps piss some people off. =)
Greensboro was an economic black hole. This is fact. I’m from GSO, but it was an economic black hole for the team. I don’t take that personally.

Do you believe in miracles?

Why harp on negatives … a presser that could’ve been about the team going to Finland, getting a closer AHL team and maybe landing an ASG is instead considered by people who care (ie. fans) as a weird money talk presser.

He answered the questions put to him, or at least I’m guessing he did as I couldn’t hear the questions. Unlike the Bush administration it would appear PK doesn’t control who asks him questions.

Anyone have a quick clifnotes version of what just went down? Sounded pretty interesting judging by the comments
Bob was there and will put up what the facts were.
These comments here indicate that the man needs to be a little more circumspect on who he’s talking to when he’s speaking at a well-publicized press conference. The ideas were fine, but the delivery came across somewhere between honest and money-grubbing and disrespectful of the audience listening in.

I’ll be very surprised if it ends up posted again. It’s not linked now. Without video and only a couple of reporters in the room, I doubt anyone there will piss off the press relations group by criticizing the owner. Really not important. Just odd and unexpected.

Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners.

HM2 said he didn’t sugar coat it so maybe that was a type or she was being facetious. Oh well, it is what it is.

I guess he left some parts out but he did mention the “couldn’t do much worse than we did this year” and feeling torn between winning and losing. I thought both those were less than PC, especially for the players to hear. Just my initial reaction.
Yes – Chip could have included the black hole of Greensboro and stupid teams in Western Canada, but those were a little remote. So maybe a little sugar, but not the full-on sweet tea.

HM2, do you know what a joke is? The western canada item was clearly a joke.
And as for less than PC, well, the truth is often gruff, but it is still the truth. PK, like everyone else on this board, is torn between winning and losing.
Greensboro was a black hole.
Of course it was a joke. So was using the term bi-polar. But not appropriate in that situation with all those ears from a team owner and Corporate CEO. It came off weird and ill-considered, IMHO. Clearly, we disagree.

for the record, I think he was referring to the black curtains all around the empty seats in the upper deck of the Greensboro Arena, he was not calling the city of Greensboro a “black hole”
Literally, the arena was a black hole and it’s not the first time it’s been called that.
As for turning the all star classic into a season ticketholder boost, that is what’s done in every market. Having more season ticketholders benefits everyone, not just ownership. Everyone who is a fan of the team should be concerned with how the franchise is going to market the team and increase season ticketholders, and using the all star game to do it is a very viable way to market the team, build the fanbase, and sell more tickets.
so in other words, if you want to go to the All Star game, be prepared to buy season tickets.
Just my 2 cents
GM of CanesCountry.com
One thing I'm confused on
How is no one upset about PK saying he’s going to keep the payroll closer to the floor? That’s the only thing that impacts the actual on ice product. Grant you, I know spending a lot this year didn’t work. But is that cause for always being near the floor?
Greensboro was a black hole.
I’m somewhat sympathetic to his position, in that what business is not keeping their payroll closer to the floor these days?
Unless some of you plan to buy season tickets next year for the first time (or, better yet, some full-price walk-up tickets), can’t say that I blame him one bit.
Hopefully there will be lots and lots of entry contracts in play that will keep those salary costs low while still delivering an entertaining product.
I understand the realities of being a small market team. You can’t simply spend and spend. I got the impression from the presser that spending to the cap when you had a good team was out of the picture for a while. Now, a while might only be next season, but that seemed a bit drastic to me.
Greensboro was a black hole.
Hopefully, with the major stars under contract and lots of young talent bubbling up, we can have a “good” team without having to spend to the cap.
Maybe we can crystal ball gaze during the Olympic break on budgets for next year (and beyond), but just a cursory look reveals little RFA activity this summer for JR. Tlusty (if we want him), Peters, and Carson are the only RFA’s.
No budget-busters there.
Yeah, there’s no doubt the budget for next year will be lower, as it should be. Young players are the way to go, and they are usually cheaper. However, what about two or three years from now? If the team looks poised to challenge from the start of the season what are the chances at that time that PK okays taking on salary and going closer to the cap?
His statements that he’d like to control costs worries me that when the time comes to tweak the team, say like with Chicago adding Hossa, but not quite so crazy, that PK will be hesitant to do so and that could cost him and the team success.
Greensboro was a black hole.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to his remarks; and particularly the remarks about keeping payroll closer to the floor. Jim Rutherford had been clear that he was going to reduce the payroll; but given the amount of payroll coming off the books in form of highly paid veterans who were UFAs, reducing the payroll significantly seemed a reasonable approach. On the other hand, unless the Hurricanes can make reasonably deep runs into the playoffs the organization will lose money. It is a poor business model to have salary so low that the end result if a non-playoff team. I personally think Peter Karmanos is too much of a hockey person and has too much competitive spirit to let that happen. Of course, the easier solution is for the Hurricanes organization and fans to work cooperatively to find 4,000 or 5,000 more STHs and to increase revenue. I much prefer that route than reducing too dramatically the budget for salary.
Ticket Packages
FYI, the STH guys in front of section 113 are taking down names for people interested in going to Finland with a trip package arranged by them.
