Oskar Osala Recalled From Albany

Newly acquired, Oskar Osala has been recalled from Albany today and will play tonight against the Washington franchise that just traded him away.  Osala was included in the trade that sent Joe Corvo to the Capitals.

The Hurricanes are reporting that Erik Cole is ill and will not be able to play tonight.

We will have more information in our game preview after lunch.

Sweet! Can’t wait to see what this kid has. The game is on TV tonight right?

Still not a crook!

Yes, and on in HD. Also, there’s a cool bars stop tonight for those in the Raleigh area. Cary Ale House location for those wondering.

Speaking of which, anyone going out to watch the game at the Ale House?

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

Sweet thanks. I think I’ll probably just stay in tonight though

If it were in Wake Forest, I’d be there. I live like 5 minutes away from it.

Never been to a Cool Bars. Is it pretty fun? I was going to head to Backyard Bistro tonight, usually try to catch an away game there every so often

by WPTF Phil on Mar 10, 2010 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

It’s not too bad. Some locations get overwhelmed. It’s a pain to park when it’s at Brier Creek. Cary is okay to park, but you’ll need to get there early to get a table. It’s a good excuse to get together with Canes fans and watch a game.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 10, 2010 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Sounds good. What do they do in-game? Put the audio throught the bar, sirens for goals, etc?

by WPTF Phil on Mar 10, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, pretty much. Fan Promotions is there and they run a few games and giveaways during the intermissions. The Ale House’s have decent food and drink selections. All in all it’s a pretty good time, but it can get a bit cramped.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 10, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

I like Cool Bars for the fan camaraderie, but I much prefer to WATCH a game at Backyard Bistro. The loudness and crowded-ness of a Cool Bars detracts from the enjoyment of the game for me… but that’s just my preference.

by Cyn4Canes on Mar 10, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

I’m the same way. If I go out I want to watch and listen to the game — think its Bistro tonight for me. But I’ll have to try a Cool Bars once in a while

by WPTF Phil on Mar 10, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

I can agree. My preferred watching spot is Edwards Mill Bar and Grill. I tried the new Rudino’s one night but was less than pleased. Poor angles on the TVs, only okay food, and poor beer specials. We ended up at Edwards Mill by the middle of the second.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 10, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Corner of Edwards Mill and Duraleigh right? And where’s the new Rudino’s? I live near the Strickland one; I only like it during the summer for the rooftop atmosphere

by WPTF Phil on Mar 10, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s the location. It’s over by the bank on the far north end. The Rudino’s is on the far south end in the old Hollywood Video/K&W cafeteria spot. It would be significantly superior if it had rooftop access.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

Still may be just the perfect time to bring up Osala. Man, we now have 2 guys who “know” the Caps system, which apparently is unlike anything else in the NHL from the way Walker and Corvo are talking.

My aquarium is hardly correlating these days. Remember Ray Whitneyfish died in January? -now I know that was just a tease. I still have Babchuk and now Corvo fish with no one in a Canes jersey to match. Cullen still swims merrily with LaRose. I replaced Whitney fish with one I called Whitchuk – anticipating he would evolve into Boychuk.

I give up.

I’d think most folks want to make sure there are going to be tickets available before they’re released to the public, so they really need to let us know before the 15th IMO.

I just emailed my rep to see if I could get an update.

Yes, but do I have to be a season-ticket holder or sign up for a trip package in order to qualify to get a ticket through the Canes organization? And is the package part of a seven-day or five-day or three-day trip so I know what to budget? Do I get tickets for both events or only one? What’s the price range and seat selection range? Are there a range of seating options to fit my budget?

Now, the answer to none of those questions is an issue for me personally, but I know they are for lots of folks who are trying to decide if they can go.

I am convinced one the coaches and organization see how much a large power forward opens space for the other Hurricanes forwards, they will wind up determined to draft some more power forwards. A fast, big, mean, power forward to go with Staal/Jokinen on the first line would really transform the team.

I am so very happy that Hurricanes finally have a power forward 6'4" 220 lbs

You are dead on right. I am really beyond delighted that the Hurricanes obtained a power foward 6’4" and 220 lbs, who can skate and who has great hands and excellent speed. Not to stereotype any player, but I was hoping for a Finnish power forward because the Finnish players seem to have excellent coaching in terms of thinking the game of hockey as a team game. Also, the Finnish players often have an intangible ability to stay focused on situational hockey — such as avoiding even a close to late hit when the referees are looking for a chance to even out penalties and thereby stretching a hit into a penalty, etc.

I think the Hurricanes will love having a player like Osala who can over power his defenders in front of the net and can freight train to the net. Osala has a tremendous opportunity to make a place for himself on the Hurricanes.

by abramsdoug on Mar 10, 2010 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

I was in hearings today or I definitely would have been one of the first people to post on Osala being called up.

by abramsdoug on Mar 10, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Osala’s a big body, but i wonder how physical he’ll be … he’s not really known for that. I hate to mention Vasicek, b/c his size was so frustrating in that it was never used, but Osala uses his more for puck possession than banging. Still, he’ll be an asset in front of the net.

by Cory Lavalette on Mar 10, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

great hands and excellent speed?

There was a reason he wasn’t a top-6 even in the Hershey Bears line up. He’s big, but isn’t fast and doesn’t have a great shot. The best you can hope for is Knuble like. Not the fastest, but plunks his rump in the net and tips in goals. That takes a while to perfect though.

I caught John Forslund on 99.9 for a couple of minutes on my way home. Scouting report on Osala from Jeff Daniels is that he’s very quick and strong with the puck. The Finns all met him for the first time at Olympic camp this summer and they all say he shows “a lot of promise and potential.”

And his last name is pronounced OH-sah-lah, with the emphasis on the first syllable. For some reason in my head I called him Oh-SAH-lah.
