Interesting to see Boychuk on that list, although it’s nice to know he may be getting some playoff experience.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

I don’t think that its that suprising for Boychuk to be on the roster. He is a first year pro and needs to continue to get the experience of playing in high pressure circumstances, especially if we intend to compete next year. Furthermore, he hasn’t been playing big minutes in Raleigh enough to really constitute not giving him a lot more time somewhere else, ex. Sutter last year was sent down and remained with the Rats for the end of their season.

I was expecting that as the season wound down, especially after the Canes are eliminated from the playoffs, that Boychuk would get a shot on one of the top three lines.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

I agree. I still think Boychuk will get top three minutes before this season is over. He is getting much better on defense as his NHL experience grows. He is always a threat to score when he has the puck; and he is so fast and quick he is mastering the art of drawing penalties. The ability to draw penalties is a huge asset for a team and is a skill set that doesn’t get enough attention or appreciation.

Why no Mike Murphy? I figured injury would not impact this list, strange.

by wylde4canes on Mar 12, 2010 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Pogge and Peters would likely be getting the bulk of the starts anyway. Murphy will be available on an emergency basis.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

Wasn’t the org pretty high on murphy? Is it just due to injury, or less than stellar play?

He’s injured.

I didn’t mean to be nebulous in my previous reply, I’m still trying to find a recent article, so far I’ve seen a note from 2/25 where Jeff Daniels says he’s “not close” to returning with an upper-body injury.

I am totally clueless about stuff like this so forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question (it may very well be). If Justin has to stay in Raleigh for any more time (potentially the rest of the season) what happens? Does Albany get to add another goalie? And did they put Justin on the list just so he could play in case Cam comes back?
And what’s the story with Murphy?

They had to pick two … they picked Pogge over Murphy. I think, for now, Murphy is OK. I have an e-mail in to the Rats to double check.

And yes on Peters … Albany will be in the playoffs, so he will likely go back and start once Carolina’s season — perhaps sooner if they want him down their to start. Not sure if the AHL playoffs start before the NHL reg. season ends.

Actually … Murphy is still hurt … for about a month now.

Jesse Eisenberg, media relations with the Rats, believes current emergency guys are Mike Morrison, Cedric McNicoll, Matthew Pistilli and Jonathan Paiement.

Albany Rats Roster

That roster is a strong, strong team and has the chance to go deep into the playoffs. It will be fun to watch.

the rats are at the end of the first period playing Rochester and they the rats are down 2-1 and Pogge went out after getting mugged 2c times by the Americans and in the net too as the Americans are crqashing the net physically but not actually shooting on goal.
And Osala is playing for the rats too…Good follow up Cory..

Osala's two goals

I, too, was watching the Rats game against Albany. I was struck by how solidly the entire team plays. With Osala, his first goal was coast to coast and he came in fast and strong down the left side. He has a deceptively fast stride and released the shot before the goalie could react. Once advantage tall forwards have is that the puck comes off the stick significantly closer to the goalie and makes it harder for the goalie to react. The second goal was a muddle around the slot and Osala managed to maintain possession of the puck and put it in the back of the net. I saw him at the pre-game skate against the Caps, but Cole was healthy and played. Osala is a mountain of a man and I got a much better true sense of how big he is watching him in person. Needless to say, I am excited about Osala’s potential.

That’s what you’ve been screaming for man. Im excited too. I wouldn’t mind seeing him play with Cole (instead of only playing for him). That would be a nice set of wingers for a physical center like… I don’t know….Ruuuu? He did play center for Chicago. Ruutu centering Cole and Osala is exactly the physical scoring line I’ve wanted to see here. It’s a shame that Osala will develope right around the time Cole is sliding down the hill on the backside of his career.

Osala/Ruutu/Cole

I would love to see Osala/Ruutu/Cole on power plays, at minimum. Maurice has said that he was considering giving Ruutu a chance at center. If the Osala/Ruutu/Cole trio along with Staal and Pitkanen were to work on the power play, they could try them from time to time when the Hurricanes need to emphasize the freight-train aspect of their game on even strength situations.

I continue to hope that Jim Rutherford will find a 6’4" 220 lb young Eric Cole in the upcoming draft. It would be a chance to start a Thorton/Heatley-like duo with Staal/Mr. Freight-train forward.

by abramsdoug on Mar 13, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

Cole was a fine winger for Staal when they both set career highs. I think you are right, but Osala might be that guy. Even still drafting another power forward type (or 2 or 3) would never be a bad thing imo. They don’t grow on tree’s after all.
