Sutter Out, Samson In: Coyotes at Hurricanes, Game Day Preview
The Phoenix Coyotes, (40-22-5) are visiting tonight and they will be out to ruin the Carolina Hurricanes, (28-31-8) eight game winning streak at home. The Coyotes are currently in fourth place in the powerful Western Conference and have a three game winning streak of their own on the line.
The Canes are still one of the hottest teams in the league and have an 8-1-1 record in their last 10 games.
The home team will be without the services of their second line center, Brandon Sutter. The youngster is suffering from the affects of a lower body injury and his status is day-to-day. Jerome Samson has been recalled from Albany and will fill in on the fourth line.
Samson is Albany's leading scorer and was recently named the AHL's "Player of the Week." He had seven points in three games last week which added to his career best of 32 goals and 30 assists so far this season. His goal total is presently second highest in the AHL.
Look for the following lines:
- Staal, Whitney, Cole
- Jokinen, Ruutu, LaRose
- Dwyer, Samsonov, Kostopoulos
- Brind'Amour, Samson, Boychuk
- Gleason, Pothier
- Pitkanen, Carson
- Harrison, Picard
Rookie netminder Justin Peters will make his second consecutive start in goal.
It's expected that Ilya Bryzgalov will start for Phoenix.
The Coyote lineup is loaded with snipers and they are led by newly acquired Wojtek Wolski.
Some long time Caniacs will remember the name, Radim Vrbata, who played for the Hurricanes back from 2003 to 2005.
For more information about the Coyotes, check out Five For Howling.
The Hurricanes are led by Jussi Jokinen, Eric Staal, and Ray Whitney.
The game will be televised by FS Carolinas starting at 7 p.m. As always, we will have the open game thread up and running at 6:30.

Samson?
Someone for Picard to talk to I guess.
Thing is I like the Yotes and while I want the Canes to win, an OT win by the Canes is fine with me.
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

I think everyone knows how I feel about this. However, I am remaining hopeful that he will, in fact, be ready to go on Tuesday.

i like that brind'amour line
two young kids and an old fart
hopefully brindy will teach them a few things
GO CANES GO !!!
Sutter
Stan Fischler, co-host of Friday’s NHL Live show:
“What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star.”
This is going to be my new signature.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
Although I’d hate to lose any of the karma the current signature is bringing.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
I would chance the change, Timmy has not done a whole lot the past few games….and CG please take care of Brandon and make sure he heals quickly. I would say lots of bed rest and TLC…..
Stan Fischler
Stan Fischler has a twitter account and I like reading what he has to say there. He says exactly what he things. Many times I disagree, but the remarks are thought provoking. I agreed with him on the fact that Campbell was without a spine in failing to suspend Matt Cooke, for example. I think Fischler is right about the fact that Brandon Sutter’s play helped transform the Hurricanes into a team that never backs down and always stays in the fight. There is much, much more to Brandon Sutter than first meets the eye. I think he is one of the most improved players in the NHL when one considers where he was at the end of last season and where he is now. There is also much, much more fight and grit to Sutter than one might think; but if one puts the isocam on Sutter, he is always in position and never, ever gives up on a play.
Oskar Osala
The Rats 4-3 victory over the Americans was mentioned over in the List Released thread, but here’s an article that describes Osala’s two goals (top right corner, top left corner) after arriving just in time for the faceoff.
Also note Rodney with the game-winner and an assist, along with two assists for McBain.
A come-from-behind winning experience for our future Canes.
its a good time to be a canes fan. Outsiders might not think so b/c of the standings but this is going to be a really good young team in maybe as little as 1 year

Getting younger every day
Trivia from the WRAL Sportsfan gameday preview:
· Youth Movement: The Canes’ 20-player lineup for opening night had an average age of 30.35 and a median age of 30. The anticipated 20-player lineup for Saturday’s game has an average age of 27.6 and a median age of 27.
Shoot, Jokinen, shoot!
More trivia from those game notes:
…the Hurricanes are 17-3-4 when he scores a goal.
And a big thank from the STH's for this:
Home Sweet Home: Carolina is 18-12-3 at home thus far this season and has won each of its last eight home games.
Okay, time to work in the garden for a bit before gametime. :-)
“the weather is here,I wish you were beautiful”
its been great to day. been outside all day long working in the yard and playin’ guitar. A few rum drinks. Its starting to feel like hurricane season.

Lucky you
I’ve been in my garage, cleaning up cat $#!+ as the cat is too lazy to use the pet door like the dogs.
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
lol. I think that would now be offically named the “doggy door”. I can’t keep my cat inside and my two dogs never want to be outside. I think they are confused as to their true species.

Heading out to the game tonight, so I don’t get to hang on here, but just wanted to drop in and say hello! :)
Can someone please get Manny a new shirt? He DESERVES one.
RBC and lack of decent wireless signal; and random thoughts on game tonight
I can’t get anybody’s attention at the Canes on this issue. It would be a great idea to make certain there was a decent wireless/broadband signal at the RBC. I really enjoy following the game with the comments here a CC — where at the RBC or at home watching.
I am really hoping that Samson proves to the Canes coaches and management that he is the real deal. I think he brings an edge that the Hurricanes need. I know some people here at CC wonder if he can make the step up to the NHL; and I understand the points they raise. Having watched a ton of Albany Rats games, I am convinced Samson will stick with the Hurricanes next season. I am enthusiastic that he and Boychuk will work well together tonight. I’d love to see both Boychuk and Samson get goals tonight. The Coyotes fourth line has been playing well and it is going to be important the Boychuk/Samson/Brind’Amour have a strong game tonight.
It is also going to be interesting to see how the second line plays in terms of chemistry. Given the very significant talent in Albany at forward and the numerous draft picks, it is going to be interesting to see how Jim Rutherford deals with next season. Cole, LaRose, Brind’Amour, and Samsonov have contracts that expire next season. Similarly, Jokinen and Pitkanen also have contracts that expire next season. As I work and re-work possible lines for next year, it seems to me that possibly two out of three players will not be keep after next season among Samsonov, Cole, and LaRose. Accordingly, I see these remaining games as Samsonov’s, Cole’s, and LaRose’s audition for a spot on the team beyond next year.
For LaRose, he needs to be very productive on LaRose/Jokinen/Ruutu line because he needs to play top nine minutes with his salary. Cole and Samsonov are in similar situations because their salaries are too expensive for fourth line players. With Sutter out, LaRose, Cole, and Samsonov need to score — particularly on some ugly goals around the net.
I love Samson’s game. I don’t recall people dissing him, as much as just ignoring him. The talks been all about Boychuk ,Bowman and Tlusty.
Eric Staal...Team Canada first line

the RBC center is a big metal building, and that’s not always conducive to a wireless signal. Earlier last year my iphone found a wireless signal, but I haven’t seen it since. I agree with you that having that access would be cool for fans.
Cole, LaRose, Brindy, and Samsonov are part of the lineup for 10-11. Brindy will retire after that season, and Cole may as well. LaRose and Samsonov will either be trade bait or not be signed for 11-12. This team is transitioning to be much younger, as is (imo) the NHL.
I’m beginning to suspect it’s a bandwidth issue. Too many concurrent connections.
I come into games late sometimes, and can’t even get an internet connection from the parking lot, even though showing all bars and 3G level connection to the network. I think the number of users is just overwhelming the area antennas.
Need those spot booster stations like they set up for golf tournaments and other events where they know there will temporarily be a large customer base. But, on a more permanent basis.
It's definitely bandwidth.
I can get 5 bars but nothing actually gets through.
If I force my iPhone to Edge instead of 3G, I usually get a little trickle of bandwidth.
They definitely need some boosters.

Cole, Samsonov, Brind'Amour, LaRose
I am guessing you are correct that Samsonov and LaRose will be trade bait next season. Unless Cole’s neck injury improves and he returns to at least a 20 goal scorer, I suspect he will not be re-signed and probably will retire. I think the Hurricanes will try to move Samsonov over the draft; but I can’t see that happening. They may buy out Samsonov; but I tend to think they will buy out Brind’Amour rather than Samsonov.
I think Maurice/Francis/Rowe realize the Hurricanes have to get even younger, bigger, faster, and far more physical in order to compete. Cole is the only player of the four with both size and speed. One test for me is if I were able to pick my team from the Canes roster and the Albany Rats without any salary considerations which players would I take. Cole is the only player of the four I’d consider having on my lines above other prospects and veterans; and probably in the end would only use Cole, if at all, on a third line.
Rats Win !!
Rats win 5-4 (SO) with SO Goals by Bowman & Rodney !! The beat the baby pens…Hehehe !!
