How are you Bob? I would think this would be a tough game, but we are more than holding our own recently against tough competition.
That's Chuck and the letter 'K'
wonder why Mo started Pete Dawg instead of Manny tonight

they need to take classes with Mr. Jokinen.

Scores on Breakaway
The last score on the breakaway was either when Jokinen or Sutter scored on the breakaway. One thing is certain, the goalie can basically turn his back and Cole would still miss on a breakaway; whereas Staal could at least score if the goalie fell down.
i looked, but my usual websites aren’t posting anything

i agree. i hope some of the rats become regulars next year. the youth movement of the canes is providing a glimpse of what could be a bright future in raleigh.
Samson
Samson is fighting for a spot. Boychuk and Samson looked like they were in sync with each other; but they kept giving Brind’Amour decent chances and nothing came of that. Put Brind’Amour and Cole together trying to finish on rebounds; and if we had to wait until they scored, we’d all still be waiting at the RBC to see a puck hit the back of the net.
there’s a new Whitney one that was pretty good

Hey everyone. Man … Samson may have a shot at sticking if he wasn’t so careless. Needs to tone his “try too hard”
The guys are playing uninspired tonight. Phoenix is a good, hard working team. The Canes better come out and turn up the energy. Also, Gleason is not playing well. Sorry ladies, but its the truth.

The PP goal – Timmy screened the goalie, but he wasn’t the only problem on that goal. Peters needed to get on top of the crease and Cole trying to start the breakout put everyone out of position.

dunno so much that it’s uninspired as PHX is maybe the most defensive-minded team in the league (More than Lemaire and the Devils, even). Patience is a virtue vs. the Yotes.

Hurricanes Measuring Their Progress Against Teams -- Phoenix too Big and Too Well Coached
These games are largely an effort by the Hurricanes to measure themselves versus other top ranked teams. Phoenix was just too big and physical and too well-coached for the Hurricanes tonight. It also shows how much the team depends on Brandon Sutter. The lines looked pretty much dysfunctional tonight. It wasn’t a poor effort at all, but there was no continuity.
did you miss the other night his skating around on one leg during a PK????
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
Hell no you can’t Staal bash! Canescup might not be here, but I am.

I actually thing that was a total team suck 1st period not just Timmy, and I will be the first to call him out if he sucks. Kinda scary isn’t Phoenix like 30-1 when leading after the 1st? I cant believe we outshot them in the 1st seems like we spent the whole period in our own end…
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
and so it goes when you take a bad double minor.
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions
there’s so much hustle and effort … but he just seems a bit out of control. IIRC, he had a bad offensive zone penalty last call up.
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions
I think you are remembering correctly. Something like a hold behind the net in the offensive zone. Young players will make mistakes; but I would much rather see mistakes made by working hard and being physical than for the young kids to attempt to be invisible. Samson is quite fast and quick. He’ll learn to tone it down. The coaches just need to exercise patience with him.
Just past Sutter in the hallway. He’s walking ok, so he should be back the next game.

btw … Michalek is UFA this season. If he hits the market, he’s top of my list if the Canes need to replace Pothier.
no offense to Pothier. But Michalek >>> Pothier

not to mention we’re lacking a Zbynek
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 8:09 PM EST up reply actions
Michalek would be a tremendous pick-up by the Hurricanes.
I agree that Michalek is a fantastic player. Pothier has been tremendous for the Hurricanes. I wish this team, with Brind’Amour bought out, could have been the one that started this season.
he may have heard about it, and now he’s trying real hard to not say any of those things. he’ll break though. he won’t be able to help himself
just wait till the next goal is scored … he won’t be able to help himself when it comes time to mention how important a goal is when there’s a two-goal lead.

didn’t say that, what I said was this a sucktastic TEAM effort not on one player
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
Come on now. When the team plays bad, often times Staal takes a lot of the blame. You’re right the whole team is playing bad, but Timmy IS having a bad game. He deserves being called out as much as Staal.

anyone having a bad game can be called out, I just don’t see where he has been so awful

In his defense … he’s had a different partner for the last couple months … first Corvo was hurt, then Olympics, then Corvo back, then Corvo traded
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions
I’ll be fair – Staal has blown many chances tonight and this team needs him to capitalize. Staal has played poorly.

"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
True, but wearing or not wearing the C doesn’t mean you can’t inspire your teammates.
I like Gleason, but you have to admit he has made some uncharacteristics mistakes tonight. I’m just not finding this fair (being a Staal fan), if you play bad you should be open to bashing.

*shrug … I’m a Canes fan. Everyone’s open to criticism when it’s truly warranted. I just don’t go out of my way to pick on one or two guys.
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions
and agree on the Staal thing. Doan’s been quiet tonight and his team is up 3-0
by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions
My whole point was many people here criticize Staal for just about everything and the one time someone points out Timmy is having a bad game, feelings are hurt. What’s up with that? I defend by boy, yes – but I call him out and take stuff also. All I’m saying is be fair and be able to accept the criticism when its due.

by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 9:02 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not trying to find a scapegoat. I was just pointing out a bad decision and it magnified. Again, I just find it funny that Staal can be blamed for so much, but you can’t criticize certain players without being criticized yourself.

by Cory Lavalette on Mar 13, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
I have no problem with the criticism when warranted, I didn’t think he was having as awful a game as you, that is all, no hurt feelings

Staal Tonight
The first line all really struggled tonight against a well-coached, large, and physical team. It’s not a secret in the NHL that the Hurricanes have trouble with teams built like Penguins, Flyers, Sharks, Bruins, Coyotes, and even Blue Jackets. Staal tends to get very frustrated when he can’t get open lanes and when he has to skate through traffic to get a shot.
Seriously Tripp have you got to bring up the poor guys fiancee getting killed???
"That’s what happens when you suck" - Tim Gleason
Captain obvious here, but we could really use one of those late period momentum changing goals about now.
generally not a fan of momentum changing fight … but might be needed.

this is all about PHX .. really. great goalie + stifling system + well-executed plan = tough to play. You can’t give this team chances b/c they’re not going to take risks. The double-minor was a killer.

Hurricanes 5 on 3; = failure
If there is a worse team than the Hurricanes at scoring on 5 on 3s, I would like to hear which team that is. They can’t seem to get open lanes to shoot and certainly can’t get anybody to screen the goalie.
PHX a lot like Mo’s Cup finals team. When they execute, they’re near impossible to score on. Plus Bryz > Weekes/Irbe

Musical Chairs with Lines
The lines just did not gell at all tonight. The Coyotes are so well-coached that any time the Hurricanes got out of position, the Coyotes were ready to take advantage. I hope Sutter is back for Tuesday. I like Samson; but could have done without the high stick penalty.
last time we played them was Jussi’s debut last year.

Funny seeing they had yesterday off because of “playing so good” against the Craps and the Pens, I believe they will be on the ice tomorrow
I’m just going to say WOW! We got completely outplayed against a team that didn’t necessarily need this game. This one makes you want to tank the rest of the season.

Hey guys…just got home from the game. Bryzgalov looked GOOD tonight (in my only saving moment of the night, he’s one of my fantasy goalies :-/ ) I’m shocked though…dollar hot dog night and no Peters/hot dog correlations? Must have been a light night. Honestly though, we played 2 division leaders and the Western 4th place team in 4 nights, so 1-1-1 isn’t horrible. Just need to move on from this one…the way Phoenix plays, it’s like all their players have puck magnets installed. They make very few mistakes and all 4 lines are actually quite good.
Can someone please get Manny a new shirt? He DESERVES one.
All in all, it was a fun, if painful, game to watch. The crowd was big and didn’t bail when the Hurricanes clearly had lost the game. Bryzgalov was going to make the Hurricane beat him with rebounds or deflections. The Hurricanes didn’t tank the game, but neither did they come out on fire. Mostly, the lines were totally out of sync. I like Cole, but can’t see how he can be a first line forward when he can’t score goals. He is skating as well as I have seen and is playing solid defense. Staal has not been in sync since getting back from the Olympics in general. Tonight, Staal was skating hard, but was getting really frustrated.
For the first time since I’ve seen Carson up at Carolina, he had a young defenseman moment and misjudged a puck. I view it as a teaching moment for him. Harrison had trouble with positioning on some occasions, but again he is a young defenseman.
Phoenix is the kind of team that can make our smaller forwards seem to vanish. It was an excellent chance for the Hurricanes to see how they stack up against a well-coached, big, physical team; and the answer for tonight is that they still have considerable work to do.
