Carolina Hurricanes Recall Top Defensive Prospect Jamie McBain

From the Hurricanes:

HURRICANES RECALL DEFENSEMAN JAMIE MCBAIN

2009 Hobey Baker finalist has yet to make his NHL debut

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Jamie McBain from Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL). McBain will be available for the team’s game against the Boston Bruins tonight at the RBC Center.

McBain, who will turn 22 on March 25, is in his first full professional season and has yet to make his NHL debut. The Edina, MN, native leads all Albany defensemen and ranks second among River Rats in scoring this season with 40 points (7g, 33a) in 68 games played. He ranks third on the team in plus/minus (+13) and is currently ninth among AHL defensemen in points this season.

McBain (6’2", 200 lbs.) was the Hurricanes’ first selection (63rd overall) in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played three seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of Wisconsin, where he totaled 15 goals and 64 assists (79 points) in 111 career games. McBain was selected as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s (WCHA) Player of the Year and a candidate for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award (top college player) following his junior season in 2008-09, after totaling 37 points (7g, 30a) to lead the Badgers in scoring. He led all WCHA scorers in scoring in league games with 28 points, making him just the second defenseman in league history to lead the conference in points. McBain is a product of the United States National Team Development Program, and represented the United States at the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Championships.

McBain!

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!

And, wouldn’t you know it. First home game I have to miss this season (meeting).

At least it’s in HD…and, maybe I can make the third period.

Here are the lines. Cole up to the first w/Staal. I thought we were promised the return of 12-13-36 when Sutter came back.

as long as you have been a canes fan & here @ CC…I am sorta surprised at your astonishment of NOT getting your 12,13,36 fix…but personally i’ll just wait and see what happens as the game goes on….but seriously…I’m glad Sutter is back…and that McBain is getting a shot tonight…have a good afternoon…Go Canes !!

Yeah what’s up with this? I also was thinking that line was temporary while Sutter was out…I need to see some finish out of Cole (no “Finnish” pun intended. But that would be funny)

Cole on the First Line

I have been very interested in how strongly the coaches and players feel that Cole is an important part of the first line. I thought the Whitney/Staal/Jokinen line has been playing outstanding hockey. On the other hand, if I were coach, I probably would have Jokinen/Sutter/Ruutu as a line — perhaps for years to come. Cole is giving the first line blazing speed and a body-banging power forward. Maybe he can get his scoring touch as well. I am very excited about McBain being recalled and think Harrison will be a healthy scratch.

The only bummer, if there is one, is that my son has a school lacrosse game tonight, so I had to give our tickets away. I’ll be watching the game on the dvr and following it via CC — so please you folks watching the game give lots of details.

I think that alone should make alot of us give him the benifit of doubt. It’s been along road for him, but they must see something alot of us don’t. I think he is the perfect style of player to play on the line. Whitney and Staal both finish strongly enough that Cole might not have to be the scorer on the line. He can create alot of space when he is right.

What ever happend to Ruutu being on the first line? Was moved down when we got Cole, but…

I also like the Jussi/Sutter/Ru line.

Have fun @ your son’s game, we will do our best to keep you up to date im sure.

I love a Jussit/Sutter/Ruutu line. Why not keep them together? In my opinion that line has a great opportunity to provide a good portion of the scoring and on any night where Staal decides not to show up, this 2nd line could carry our team to a Win. Jussi almost has 30 goals this year… To go from being considered Re-Entry waiver depth on the Lightning to a top-6 30 goal scorer here in less than 1 season is really amazing. That has to be up there is the top-10 all time shortest comebacks.

I think that this line playing so well together is much more a reason they kept Jokinen down than Cole being a hidden superstar. In my opinion Cole looks awful offensively on most nights, he plays great defensive hockey and maybe would be a solid 3rd line checker, however his one move of trying to power into the middle simply isn’t working against top pairing D. It’s embarassing to see him get knocked aside every time he does it, maybe against bottom pairing D he will find better luck.

Jokinen/Sutter/Ruutu Line

I am thinking that the organization is also trying to see what lines will look like next season. I tend to think next season the first line may well be Whitney/Staal/#1 draft choice,

by abramsdoug on Mar 16, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally I think Jokinen alongside Sutter and Ruutu is just a dangerous as Jokinen alongside Staal and Whitney. The games that Sutter/Jokinen/Ruutu played together they were a force and really fun to watch. If we could actually find a decent first line winger to play up with Staal, a Jokinen-Sutter-Ruutu line sounds like a perfect 2nd scoring line in my opinion for a Playoff bound team next year.

F-ing Sweet

I was on the fence about tonight’s game, but I’m not know.

On a side note, what’s up with Gleason? I missed the end of Saturday’s game. Did he get hurt?

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 16, 2010 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

He took a shot to the foot in the first period on Saturday and he’s gotten hit in that same spot a few times lately. He played very little the rest of the game and seemed a little off. I’d put money on him fracturing his foot (possibly before or during the Olympics) and now it’s gotten worse.

So long as it’s something that heals and not something that lingers like ligament or tendon damage.

Mo just said Gleason may play. I love Gleason and am always impressed with his attitude, but if he’s hurt, I want him to sit and get better.

More information about the game tonight via twitter:

nhl_canes The Canes expect both Gleason and McBain to play tonight. The team will either dress seven defensemen or make a healthy scratch

Scratch Harrison. Nothing against the guy, but he’s the one least likely to be on the blue line next season.

Yeah that’s who I see having a press box hot dog tonight.

I wish we had a forward to scratch so Sampson could play. I just don’t know who???? TKO plays too hard, Sammi I think can contribute (he is so streaky),Rod has been playing better IMHO,

Cole doesn’t have to be scratched. Just let one of the Brady kids play basketball near him and I’m sure he’ll crack faster than a vase at the bottom of the steps.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

I too like Harrison; but given the talent in Carolina and Albany, Harrison is going to have to battle for a spot.

by abramsdoug on Mar 16, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Its about time. Elsker, I feel your pain. This is the first home game I have missed in a long time. Hopefully I will get to see him against Washington. I think Harrison misses the AHL.

by HinesCatchUp23 on Mar 16, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Sink or Swin

Good on him, it’s got to be exciting. Since it’s his first NHL game I don’t think we can expect much other than Jamie to play simple. It’s going to be a big adjustment in speed and since it’s his 1st NHL game and the Bruins know it they’ll put a lot of pressure on him. If he plays significant minutes I expect the B’s will try to match him up against Lucic’s line who are all big and physical.

I am stoked about McBain. Ive been excited about him for years now. Finally the day has come!!!! This is the game i’ve been waiting for all year. just 6 more hours to go…..

BTW….McBain had a teammate in College that is with the Candiens. I think it was his D partner McDonagh?? or sometihng like that. Anyone know what he is up to?? I guess he would be a Junior right now if he is still up in badgerland.

Ryan McDonagh is now in the Rangers org … he was part of the Scott Gomez trade. He’s a junior at UW.

by Cory Lavalette on Mar 16, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Cory! Unless he has seriously fallin’ from graces, the Rangers got a very good Dman in that deal. I don’t even know who eles went where (for somereason Im drawing a blank on the trade) but just with that the Rangers did pretty well.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 16, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I had no idea why they had to give him up in order to take on Gomez’s ridiculous contract. Made zero sense to me. Shocking how many errors Gainey made compared to how well he did things in Dallas. I mean … outfoxed by Glen Sather?

by Cory Lavalette on Mar 16, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn’t happen much, eh? I like gomez but as you said his contract is crazy.
