Pro likely this year
Zac already stated earlier this season he wants to play Pro ASAP and can finish college later, "At this point I want to play pro as soon as I can, because I can hold off on finishing school until later. As soon as I get the opportunity to make the jump to pro, I’m going to take it. "
yeah, I know … I think a lot of this in the Canes’ court. They make think a regime change isn’t best for his development.

Any idea what brought this on?
Also, the more I think about it, the more I think the Canes may wait on Dalpe, or make him wait. If they end up with Seguin, which I didn’t think was possible last week but looks more possible now, they’ll be fairly stacked at center. They may want Dalpe to stay at Ohio State so he and Seguin don’t come offer their rookie contracts at the same time. They could also return Seguin to juniors for an additional year.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Well OSU has high expectations in all sports and hockey hasn’t been a shining gem for years (it wasn’t when I was there either) so they’re shaking things up. Dalpe went to OSU not only because of the school but because of the coaching staff. A new staff could limit his ice time if he doesn’t fit into the system they play. Also collegiate hockey has a less rigorous schedule then major jr, so he needs a few years in the AHL likely to get his body ready for the NHL. I doubt contract length will play into JR’s decision since he’s obviously gotten all he can out of OSU’s system.
Contract length is a very important issue when it comes to salary capped leagues, especially for young teams. Look at Chicago. If they had only one RFA come due last July as opposed to four the flubbed contracts wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. Dalpe’s ability to help the team compete next year will have to be measured against any rookies and the desire to have salary certainty. If the Canes win the draft lottery, and get Hall, then Dalpe makes sense as he and Dwyer or a FA (maybe Cullen, but I doubt it) can split time at the third and fourth center role. If they draft Seguin, who may be more ready to compete for a full season in the NHL, then the role Dalpe fills on the team is limited and his improvement at OSU vs Charlotte will have to be factored against burning a year of his eligibility in the AHL.
Depending on how things pan out the Canes could be quite competitive in three seasons and you’d like to avoid giving Dalpe and this years pick a raise at the same time.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
That being said … if you play a guy a year or two in the minors, the less likely it is that he’ll become a breakout star by the time his entry-level deal is up, therefore making his second deal reasonably priced and also bringing him along slower.

Yes please
Nothing left for him to prove in Ohio, time to play a year in Albany and then the big show
