Zac Dalpe Signs Three Year Deal
WRAL just confirmed what Cory projected this morning, the Carolina Hurricanes signed Zac Dalpe to a three year entry level contract today. The Canes recently released the details.
Dalpe will be paid $550,000 in 2010-11, $600,000 in 2011-12 and $700,000 in 2012-13, and at the American Hockey League (AHL) level, he will be paid $65,000 per year. He also receives a signing bonus of $262,500. Dalpe will join the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate Albany River Rats on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of this season.
Good luck to the rookie on his new professional career.

Dalpe and Signing
I think we are going to be very, very pleased with having Dalpe as a Hurricanes player. I have the feeling Jim Rutherford will start some other signings as well — perhaps even Babchuk.
That wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I think our defense is in much better shape than in the last cup run and could hide some of Babs shortcommings. Plus he has spent another year of playin hockey, which is never a bad thing. I would love for us to re-sign him.

It wouldn’t be a bad move at all. Our PP has taken a hit with the losses of Cullen and Corvo and having Babs back with his big shot could help a ton. Babchuk only had a cap hit of 1 mil last tour but I wouldn’t mind JR giving him like 1.25 or a bit higher. Maybe having Staal as cap and some good young up and comers could help with his so-rumored prima donna-ness.
Does anyone understand if the “amateur tryout contract” for this year has any significance? I’m thinking it might have to do with the Clear Day roster list or related to getting called up to the NHL.
Or maybe to determine eligibility for certain cut-off games as a professional, to the benefit of both the team and Dalpe.

If you’re on an amateur tryout can you even be able to be called up?
I guess there's always next season.
no … he’d need to be on an NHL contract.

As usual, Cory’s a couple of steps ahead of the rest of the pack. Well done!
And welcome Zac!

yeah this bears repeating, Cory you do a helluva job keeping us right on top of, and like today, ahead of the curve. You, Bob, and HMO2 are awesome. Also I feel like LTD, you should be included in all of that for your contributions to not only really great pics, but also with your practice reports. the 4 of you are unmatched by any other blog in this league!
If a picture is worth a thousand words, I’d say she’s our leading contributor. Imagine this site without her close-up portraits and images – in familiar uniforms and familiar ice among familiar faces.
eg An image of Zac Dalpe as a Buckeye, in action in Columbus Ohio wouldn’t be nearly as effective.

Awesome. Since he wasn’t on the 22 man roster can he compete in the AHL Playoffs?
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Yes … 22-man roster does not include players whose season’s have recently finished as an amateur. That’s why Lawson’s playing now, too.

Kind of related, but the Rat’s had another win last night, over the Sharks. The Infestation has links to a bunch of stories. The new guy, McNicoll, from the Yelle/Reed trade got a goal. Osala contributed too. Kyle Lawson was +1 with an Assist. Game Sheet

And all these wins without Peters, Murphy or Pogge in goal… the last 2 due to injury. Tlusty and Conboy have been on the injured list for a while, too.
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
McNicoll and Lawson
I’ve really enjoyed watching McNicoll and Lawson with the Rats. McNicoll has some great offensive instincts.
Is he (McNicoll) conspicuously small?

McNicoll
I was somewhat surprised that McNicoll did not appear to be as small as I expected him to be. He is not a giant; but he didn’t appear to be tiny.
Good to hear about the signing. I’m really interested in seeing what he can do (‘specially since I’ll see the team next season in Charlotte). I like this route that JR is taking with getting bigger (no complaints with Whitney or Boychuk tho) but it looks like we’re going to be getting a lot stronger down low and around the net with Dalpe and Osala. He sounds like he’s going to be big when he’s ready for the NHL.
speaking of Osala
It was funny in a way to watch him and the guys on his line when he scored a goal (he got 2 last night) even taking into consideration all were on skates…he looked so much “bigger” than his line mates !!
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
