Hurricanes at Penguins, Game Day Preview

The Carolina Hurricanes, (29-33-8) take on the Pittsburgh Penguins, (42-24-5) in an afternoon game at Mellon Arena beginning at 1 p.m. this afternoon.  This is the first of a back-to-back sequence for the Hurricanes as they return home to face the Buffalo Sabres Sunday evening.

The Canes are coming off an emotional overtime win against the Capitals on Thursday night.  They are 2-2-1 in their last five games.

The Pens are fresh off of a dominating 3-0 win in Boston, but are also 2-2-1 in their last five games.

The injuries keep mounting for the Hurricanes as Alexandre Picard was injured on Thursday night and is now listed as "week-to-week".  Bryan Rodney has been recalled to take his place on the blueline.  This is the fifth recall this season for the defenseman, who has earned two assists in eight games five assists in 10 games for Carolina so far this year.

The Carolina blueline is younger than ever and now features: Joni Pitkanen, Jamie McBain, Brett Carson, Brian Pothier, Jay Harrison, and Rodney.

Star-divide

The coaching staff has determined that Manny Legace will start this game and Justin Peters will go against the Sabres.  Legace has a career 4-0-0 record against Pittsburgh with a GAA of 1.80.

On March 11th, Carolina beat Pittsburgh, 4-3 in overtime on a blast by Brian Pothier

The Canes are 3-9-2 in the first half of back-to-backs this year and 7-6-1 in the back half.  They have also won two of three games against Pittsburgh so far this season.

The only player who is streaking for the Hurricanes right now is Jamie McBain, who has two points in two consecutive games.

Who else is hot?  Eric Staal has 51 points in his last 44 games, (since his return from injury).    Jussi Jokinen has points in 20 of Carolina's last 27 games, (16G 15A).

For those of you who are sentimental, this will be Carolina's final game at "The Igloo" as the franchise will open a new arena next season.  But the place has been a "House of Horrors" for Carolina regarding injuries.  They will be happy to move on.

FS Carolinas will have the telecast starting at 1.  The open game thread will be ready to go at 12:30.

LETS GO CANES

I love it when the canes win normally, but I love it even more when they beat the penguins cuz there are so many Penguin glory supporters over here and I get to enjoy rubbing it in how my little unknown team can beat theirs =P

I don't mind the Pens

but Oprick, Crysbaby and Malcontent can suck rocks

If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

haha I don’t blame them to be fair, I’m ashamed that football (or soccer I believe you call it) is our apparent national sport… just a load of pansies who cry and winge each time they fall down!

I have a friend who's a huge futball fan.....

during some big game we went to a sports bar and watched.

I swear for a “non-stop game”, there was a stoppage of play for everyone who fell down, many yellow cards and a lot of out of bound kicks.

Give me hockey any day.

I try every time the world cup rolls around, but then I wake up on the couch with a drool stain on my shirt and realize it was so boring it put me into a week long coma.

Like Hockey...

…football is a game of subtlety where the most interesting parts are not the scoring. Unlike hockey, they have a lot more space to work with, so it’s a slower game. It will be boring, since you don’t have the speed to keep it interesting as a newcomer, until you learn more of those details.

That said, I really haven’t followed football so much since Cyn4Canes introduced me to hockey. Hockey has the same teamwork and strategy aspects, but with more speed, and a local professional team… It’s hard to beat that. =)

The day that building is brought to the ground will be a great day indeed.

They should crash a helicopter through the roof before they destroy it though.

Good preview from the Pittsburgh vantage point here (Pittsburgh Tribune)

Olympian Tim Gleason in Vancouver: "I don’t care what anybody says, to watch an exciting hockey game, there’s nothing like it."

Thanks HM2 for that and webbo…because of the way my cable company for my area has thigs set up..i see alot of “foote” than many here probably do…and i would agree with some here that for a “game” that moves alot, it can be dull & boring…but then again some thinks curling is too except for when some of the ladies play…hmmm…gee i wonder why that it ?? sigh…so much for being an old maried guy…:-}

For those of you not at home

or by a TV, Yahoo will be showing the game live today.

Don’t know if I missed where that was already said, if it were, but I for one being at work am very happy it is so.
