Sabres at Hurricanes: Game Day Preview

The Buffalo Sabres, (38-22-10) are in Raleigh to tangle with the Carolina Hurricanes, (30-33-8) for what will be the second game in consecutive days for both teams.  The game has a 5 p.m. start time.

The Canes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2 in overtime yesterday afternoon while the Sabres defeated the Florida Panthers, 3-1 in Sunrise, Florida last night.

Justin Peters will be in net for Carolina.  There is no update about Manny Legace, so it's assumed he will be healthy enough to be the backup.

Ryan Miller played last night for Buffalo, so it's expected that Patrick Lalime will go for them today.

Star-divide

Look for the Canes to have to same lineup as yesterday.

Jamie McBain has the longest point streak going for the team and has points in three straight games, (1G 3A).  Will he have any more gas in the tank after playing 29:50 yesterday?  How about Joni Pitkanen, who logged 34:30 of ice time?

The Canes will be starting the festivities early with a lawn party and other activities in the afternoon.  For more information, check out this link.

Die By The Blade will have the latest about the Sabres.

FS Carolinas has the telecast and the open game thread will be ready at 4:30.

If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

y’know what’s strange? these teams who have sewn up a spot in the playoffs aren’t even paying attention. The Pens, Caps, Sabres, even the Devils are just treading water, from all appearances, and this applies to their fans too. Good news for us – we’re not even on the radar. ssshhhhh. (Never doubt the madness of the Hurricanes in March)

Reading from the brain trusts.....

that are other team fan sites, it is because, “The Canes are desperate and the players are playing above their heads for better contracts somewhere else next year”.

Last year, the 2 hottest teams (in the East) going into the playoffs made it to the EC Finals. It would be interesting seeing what we could do if we could make it. I really am excited how the team has played since X-Mas. It is a huge sign of hope for next season.

Note: The announcers on NBC talked about 3 teams battling Boston for the last playoff spot in the East – NYR, Atlanta, and Carolina.

That’s cool . I just spotted this paragraph in the NHL.com game preview:

Puck drop: With the way some of the teams ahead of them are struggling, it’s hardly inconceivable that the Hurricanes could accomplish what the St. Louis Blues pulled off in the Western Conference last season — ascend all the way from last place into the top eight.

I found one little blurb speculating who will start in goal for the Sabres:
Buffalo News blog post: Sunday Morning in the FLL

Answer: probably Lalime, but maybe not.

The McBain goal is still hot news across the web.

Watching this Boston/NYR game, I wish the Rangers would start playing. One thing we don’t need is OT games. We can’t have both teams gaining points on us if we have any hope of the playoffs.

Pulling for Avery and the Rangers

There’s just something that is so wrong with that.

And wou;dn't you know it.....

when they have to win they’re losing with just over 12 minutes left.

Then again, the Canes fell flat against the B’s earlier this week too.

Now the B'ruins are up 2 to 0

with just over 8 minutes to go.

The weird thing is...

According to Sports Club Stats, the Bruins winning in regulation gives us a 0.04% higher chance of making the playoffs.

No idea how they calculate that though. :)

Actually, I can believe that.

The only team I am worried about is the Thrashers.

I think the NY Rangers are dropping away, so the loss today accentuates the fall, and the Bruins are running on empty, only beating teams that are beating themselves, for the most part.

The Thrashers I worry about and only due to the lead the B’s have built up before their going belly up are they a threat as well.

I’m excited to hopefully shut up some stupid Buffalo fans tonight!!! Let’s keep this rolling!
And this is one of the only times you’ll see me pulling for the Rangers.

We still have an extra ticket to tonight’s game if anyone is interested!

Having seen the Penguin's feed

on my PC yesterday, I like the comment by one of the announcers saying, “Even after the LaRose LaFlower show, there was still this”.

Also, they were talking up the Canes, giving them props for hanging in, being tough, etc.

Wow...

I swear, Forslund’s voice sounded a bit funny, but that had to be him — they were all compliments in the hilights. ;)

Great highlights. Was like watching the game again, but through their eyes.

Thanks for sharing that.

Glad you both enjoyed it.

But it wasn’t Forslund, nor Tripp

Well, I guess there is no way we can pick up points on 8th place today. Thank you Rangers for doing what you do best, play an uninspired game of hockey.

I know 8th is more important, but we also need to pick up points on 10th (the Rangers). And we really need the Flyers to take their paybacks in Philly tonight for their 3rd period collapse vs the Thrashers.

Olympian Tim Gleason in Vancouver: "I don’t care what anybody says, to watch an exciting hockey game, there’s nothing like it."

by hockeymomof2 on Mar 21, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, we need to make up points on the Rangers, but with a limited number of games left – only the point total of the 8th place team is important. If Boston wins, that’s an 8 point lead with what 12 games left. The chance to get to within 4 points of the playoffs today would be HUGE.

It is done, the B's 2, NYR 1

Back to 8 points (then back to 6 after the Sabre dance) behind 8th.

Bummer.

Depth chart

You have to admit, to have shed the number of pieces we have moved in the past few weeks, this lineup (and the depth beyond the immediate lineup) is not too shabby.
