Tuomo Ruutu Faces Shoulder Surgery: Is Out For Remainder of Season
The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that forward Tuomo Ruutu will undergo shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of this season. He had been suffering from this problem for some time, (perhaps from as far back as the Darcy Tucker fight).
Ruutu missed 13 games before returning just before the Olympic break in mid-February. His point production since the Olympics was way down from where it was earlier in the year.
Coach Paul Maurice was quoted as saying the forward could "no longer play the game he needs to play."
The Hurricanes will make another recall from Albany which will be officially announced a bit later.

Can someone please get Manny a new shirt? He DESERVES one.
I guess the organization didn’t want to give up on the playoffs.
Should’ve packed it in a week or two ago if he was going to need surgery.
I’ve never had to go through shoulder surgery (ThankS God) but from what I hear, folks will do most anything to avoid it because of the recovery. There’s usually a significant period of time where you have to keep your shoulder immobilized before you can even start rehab, so it’s pretty onerous.
There’s apparently an article in one of the Finnish news magazines that talks about this specific to Ruuty and I’m trying to get my hands on a translation, but apparently he’s been in major surgery avoidance mode for quite some time.

There was something said in one of the newspapers, that apparently there was a rumour circling around before the Olympics, that Ruutu needs an operation and that he was playing with some kind of a shoulder support thingy in Vancouver.
It was supposedly in Veikkaaja, and the article discussed how they were trying other forms of rehab in order to avoid surgery. It obviously came out before the announcement of his surgery but not sure if it was before or after Vancouver. I was interested in the timing of the article and obviously to get more details. And folks around here have seen him in a shoulder support thingy too, for quite some time now.

Boy this
will be a shocker to LTD…and I do feel for Ruutu…that is why i have respect for ANY player who tries and gives the effort…and i don’t think there is any current or recent past member of the Canes who haven’t or would shy away from doing the same thing…football players are tough…but Hockey players are Tougher !
I’m off to the rats site to see if they called anyone up yet & who…
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
Get them healthy.
Staal appears to be hurt as well.
Get them off the ice and in a hot tub to recuperate.
I hope they decide to try and be in the 95% healthy range, for once, for next season.
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
For CG, is Sutter hurt? Is he up to his potential?
CG will take
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
CG will take what exactly? Maybe I don’t want to know.
And to answer your origninal question, I do think he’s still working through some sort of injury.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
Oops.....
“CG will take real good and personalized care of poor, young, rich as hell Mr. Sutter”.
Nothing too bad…..
Though I could write a more detailed scenario if you wish. ;-b……
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
:GASP: I resent the implication that his bank account has anything to do with it.

It doesn't hurt it at I, I don't doubt that.
There’s just one thing missing…..
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
that should asy
“It doesn’t hurt his appeal at all, that I don’t doubt”
Don’t type, try and listen to a conversation and write something else at the same time.

for a couple of the rats in Albany here’s the link:

hate to see them go, but no one is saying if it is a way of clearing some space on the bench…the business of hockey gives me a headache @ times…
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
Bummer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was looking forward to World Championships and to see him play for our team, if Carolina won’t make it to the playoffs. He would’ve been picked to Team Finland for sure. Damn.
But I hope the surgery helps, and hope him a speedy recovery.
I was wondering earlier if he’s injured, because he hasn’t been himself lately, and still wondering the same about Staal, because he seems to be a bit down too.
Yeah...
I hope Staal’s injury, may it be his groin acting up again, or his shoulder – is healed in the off-season. I understand he may feel like he’s Captain now, he has to act like a trooper, but at what cost? He shouldn’t ruin the rest of his career just b/c he became the Captain by keeping on playing when injured. :(
Thank you Jim Rutherford and Ray Whitney for working together for Ray to stay a Hurricane! :)
I was wondering recently if he was playing injured…. I know I’m not the first to say it but he definitely hasn’t been playing like himself lately. So sad to see Ruu out, but glad he is getting his injury fixed rather than playing on any further and risking permanent injury. Hope he has a speedy recovery. I know we are all looking forward to seeing him at his peak again next season! We love you Ruutu and you will be missed on the ice!
Kind of surprised to see Tlusty wasn’t listed as a potential call up from the rats…… but I guess if he is just returning from injury too they don’t want to risk him, plus he probably has more NHL time racked up this season than Osala, Samson or Bowman. Would be good to see Osala back for the rest of the season.
The most fortunate accident of them all.............
Fingers crossed this isn’t career-limiting and he can make a full recovery.
I guess the timing is as fortuitous as it can be to give him enough time to heal before Helsinki (I hope).
ThankS God he was able to play in Vancouver.
Heartbroken to hear he’s been suffering so much.
That’s about all I got.
:-(

Can someone please get Manny a new shirt? He DESERVES one.
You were the first one I thought of, LTD. Along with hottubs, I hear sauna’s are good for healing just about anything. I’m guessing IIHF’s Team Finland is not an option for him this year.
Wondering if this is related to the injury he suffered in Dallas in November? Seems like that’s when this all began.
Is it really more than 6 months till that first game in Helsinki? Gonna be a long summer.

I have to say...
I thought it was hilarious that between twitter and here, everyone’s first response to the news was “Oh no, how is LTD going to take this?” even before “Oh man, I feel for him, that’s too bad!” =)

Yeah…first thing I see on the IM response from her was the crying smiley with the tears flowing from both sides. I gave her the pack of cards from the Phoenix game, and she literally squeaked when she saw his card on top. Hehe. So I know how it goes quite well.

Son’bitch guy cannot even play golf…. I think the Raleigh spa’s are going to busy healing and massaging ( potential summer employment ladies) some hockey players this off season. Guess its gonna be up to Big Mc to do some Ovenchicken basting tomorrow night..
That’s an interesting question: Wonder if he’ll be re-habbing here in the States or Finland.

to clarify – I would think he would stay here until the end of the season, but then go back to finland for the off season
I’ll be there, but I’m not sure what time I can finish up at work…

LOL. “Diamond” is the most common translation of Ruutu, but “box” is another translation, which in some situations is actually more appropriate.

I have to tell y’all a cute story.
I was actually traveling when I posted earlier, and got home late.
My son (who just turned eight) hurt his thumb pretty badly at school today, so when I got home he showed me his injury and told me what happened. You could tell his voice was breaking a little, and I asked him if he cried and he told me no. I asked if he was brave even though it hurt and he leaned over and whispered one word in my ear: SISU.

so cute!
Can’t wait to see him in Finland showing off his SISU!
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
oh no, Ruutu!
funny story though; I stopped by Harris Teeter to pick up some of “The Juice” for dinner (and meet Mr. Jokinen), and Ruu just so happened to be grocery shopping at this particular Harris Teeter at the same time that Jussi was signing autographs. what a coincidence
also, does anybody know Ruu’s relationship status? he had a lady friend with him…
by silent_shadow36 on Mar 24, 2010 10:16 PM EDT reply actions
I think Ruu and Jussi (and Pits) probably do a lot of things together. And I think the conclusion you likely came to about Ruu and his female shopping companion is 100% right.

That sucks about Ru. It does make a some sense, he has not been playing like himself lately. I actually think that last nights game was one of the worst I’ve seen from the Sutter-Ruutu line. They weren’t bad, but they didn’t seem to have their usually performance.
I guess we are trying to see how many call-ups we can make this season. Poor Jeff Daniels is having to work magic to put lines together. Maybe we can loan them Rod and Cole? I know they would have to go through waivers, but would anybody’s feelings be hurt if they were picked up off the waiver wire?

Considering Jonathan Cheechoo had the GWG against the Rats Saturday, anything seems okay these days.

Was Cheechoo really playing bad enough to warrant being sent down? Or was it simply a financial move by the Sens to clear some cap space since he has a fairly sizable contract?
Could be – not sure one ever really knows the motivation, but it goes to show how strange the business side of the NHL can be in affecting rosters.
