Drayson Bowman Recalled From Albany

Drayson Bowman gets another shot with the Carolina Hurricanes starting Thursday night against Washington. (photo by LTD)

The Carolina Hurricanes just issued a press release stating that Drayson Bowman has been recalled from the Albany River Rats.  It will be the second recall for Bowman this season.

He will be filling in for Tuomo Ruutu, who will be out the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury.  Ruutu's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.

Bowman ranks third among Albany skaters with 17 goals and also has 15 assists for a total of  32 points in 56 games so far in his first professional season.

We will have more details about where he will fit in tomorrow.

New Lines

Staal, Boychuk, LaRose
Sutter, Whitney, Cole
Dwyer, Bowman, Jussi
Brind`Amour, Sammi, TommyK

Thoughts? (other than this is obviously more about tryouts in an exhibition game than winning games.)

What ever happened to the magic of Staal, Whitney, Jokinen? Are we giving up on doing that now that we know it’s awesome and it works?

New Lines

HM2, I had a somewhat different reaction to the lines. As usual, I had been obsessing over the lines once it seemed clear to me that the Hurricanes were going to finish somewhere between 3 and 5. It seems that Cam Fowler or Brandon Gormley will be the Hurricanes selection. As such, my hopes for finding a franchise power forward in the draft seem to be on the rocks.

I added to the mix a statement made to me by somebody with vastly more hockey knowledge. I was talking about working an incessant number of line variations and the person asked if I had then attempted to match my lines against each of the opponents lines to obtain the best match up possible against the opponent. That process is much harder because the opponents switch their lines.

In any event, as a result of those new variations, I thought Boychuk needed to be tried on the first line with Staal; but I had a line of Boychuk/Staal/Jokinen. I can see the theoretical possibilities of Boychuk/Staal/LaRose. Without a first round draft choice power forward, the Hurricanes are going to need to develop another scoring forward from within the organization. My best guess is that the first line in Finland will be Boychuk/Staal/Jokinen.

by abramsdoug on Mar 24, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I like that (Boychuk and Jokinen with Staal). I think Boychuk and LaRose are too similar. We shall see how it plays out. Perhaps if we take up the idea of what the Caps will bring tomorrow (hopefully physically and emotionally exhausted from playing the Penguins and then the travel), and see how the line match-up when we have the home advantage last change it makes sense.

Either way, fun to watch, when you’ve been following the prospects as closely you and I have (and several others at CC). Somehow the final score doesn’t seem quite as important.

by Carolyn Christians on Mar 24, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Boychuk and LaRose have too many similarities for me to put them on the same line, if I were in charge of things. I think part of what is happening is that the coaching staff has to figure out where LaRose fits in the overall plans. Cole has really been skating hard and being a consistent force on the ice. The fact that Samsonov and Brind’Amour are on the fourth line is somewhat telling to me. I suspect Samsonov is injured, but is still playing.

Every time I work the lines for next season, I wind up concluding Brind’Amour is bought out, Samsonov is traded, and I have a big question mark for LaRose — the most I have him slotted is for the fourth line. LaRose is the wild card because he has so many intangibles and has beaten the odds at every phase of his career.

Picks #3 through #5

I think Hall and Seguin are the first two picks. It seems that Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley at virtually interchangeable in terms of who will be picked #3 and #4. From what I am reading, it seems that the third defenseman to be picked is Erik Gudbranson. If the Hurricanes pick #5, I really hope they will select a power forward. Some of the possible power forwards include Nino Niederreiter, Brett Connolly, Riley Sheahan, Nick Bjugstad, or Austin Watson. Nick Bjugstad could be a diamond among the group. Even if the Hurricanes were to pick #3, I would be very, very tempted to take a power forward. On the other hand, Fowler and Gormley are reported to be franchise defensemen.

I love Nino! but I don’t see him being highly rated to make top 10. However he seems like a great guy who would fit in well with the Canes and the Caniacs.

Nino Niederreiter

Nino seems to be on the rise in terms of his ratings. I will continue to check for other places, but here is one rating service that has him in the top ten:

http://www.mynhldraft.com/hockeyprospect-top-60-nhl-draft-prospects-mid-season/

http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/

Central Scouting has Nino at 14 (among North American Skaters).

Hockey’s future has him ranked at 11.

By the way, if you get a chance, check out Nick Bjadstad. He is around 6’5" and has tremendous skills. I suspect he will surprise some people with how high he is drafted.

I think that would be worth it, if we got an additional pick. Don’t get me wrong 11th and 24th are solid, but the player at 4th could be someone that would make the team next season, while 11th and 24th would be players down the line that need 1-3 years of development.

Consider this – if the Canes got lucky and selected Seguin, what would that mean for the future? If Seguin is as good as advertised, we couldn’t leave him wasting his skills on the 3rd line. Either Staal would have to move to wing or Sutter would need to move to the 3rd line. I know only a few people here actually care about Staal, so him moving to wing would be favored. Sutter moving to a true shut-down/checking line might work, but many here would be very upset. Its just something to consider if Seguin is even available.

Seguin at Center

My guess is the the Hurricanes would love to get Seguin. Staal, Sutter, Seguin would be an excellent set of young centers. You might well see all three on power plays, for example. Being able to run three talented lines would be a tremendous advantage for the Hurricanes, much as Crosby, Malkin, and Staal provide the Pens with amazing talent at center.

by abramsdoug on Mar 24, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

From Cory’s piece talking w/Jeff Daniels, it sounds like they’re grooming Dalpe as a #2 or #3 centerman, w Staal and Sutter. If you add in Seguin, that’s some depth, but who are you gonna relegate to 4th line minutes. You can have 3 awesome C’s (watching JStaal tie it up in the Verizon), but 4?

I’m guessing you mean Dalpe. I guess it’s possible. Kind of hard to see that when they’re so high on him now…but depends who we get. Another 1st rounder?

Olympian Tim Gleason in Vancouver: "I don’t care what anybody says, to watch an exciting hockey game, there’s nothing like it."

by Carolyn Christians on Mar 24, 2010 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, not now, you enjoy all that depth while they’re on rookie deals, but 2 to 4 years from now, theres no telling whos gonna be tradeable. If we somehow ended up with Seguin and he lives up to the hype, and Dalpe does too, then I think the team spends some of that depth on a weaker position.

by TylerA7707 on Mar 24, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, you definitely should enjoy the depth until your hand is forced. However, I wouldn’t trade any of them, ever. Dalpe started his career at OSU as a winger and making the shift back wouldn’t be that hard. He offers too much to relegate to 4th line center duties, but putting his speed and skill on a wing would be awesome, say with Sutter on the 2nd. If we somehow manage to get Seguin, I think then we start considering who should be shifted where, Staal to Wing or Sutter to a 3rd line.

Either way I think that these last few games will tell us a lot about what we need as a team, because of how many players are either already out or playing hurt.

by Caniac Kid on Mar 25, 2010 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Dalpe

I continue to hear and read that the Hurricanes have tremendous respect for Dalpe and his game. If the Hurricanes were able to draft Seguin, I believe they would move Dalpe to wing. I don’t see Jim Rutherford trading away these excellent prospects. It has taken him since the 2005-2006 season to get that much talent into the system.

by abramsdoug on Mar 25, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree completely that Staal, Sutter, and Seguin down the middle would be GREAT. My question is how would everyone take Sutter being the 3rd line center (because that would be the most likely outcome down the road). Many here talked early in the season of Sutter getting top 6 minutes and this would possibly change that.

I personally would like to see a LaRose-Sutter-Osala checking line. You have a little pest that’s not afraid to hit, a really good two-way center that can do it all, and a big physical beast that can lay hits & be a huge screen.

Triple Gold Juice - It's Potent and Guaranteed to Help You Score!

by PackPride17 on Mar 24, 2010 9:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Sutter is like J Staal in that regard. And no one questions why he isn’t top 6 with the skill the Pens have. No shame in being third line in that scenario. But, while we’re speculating, won’t Seguin end up in Edmonton or Boston (aka Kessel).

Olympian Tim Gleason in Vancouver: "I don’t care what anybody says, to watch an exciting hockey game, there’s nothing like it."

by Carolyn Christians on Mar 24, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Seguin could go top 2 or could drop to 3 or 4. I think Edmonton will select Hall. Boston could select Seguin, but I think they are looking more for a scorer or D-Man. I’m not saying Seguin can’t score, but I think he projects as more of a playmaker with two-way ability. Boston already has Savard and Krejci, so I think they might go for Gromley or Fowler. The Islanders could go Seguin or a D-Man. Tampa has Lecavalier and Stamkos, so they are unlikely going with a center. I could see them trading their pick for Atlanta’s 2 1sts and taking a goalie with one of those picks. Columbus would definitely snag Seguin, if available. And I think the Canes would take their “homegrown” product, if available.

Triple Gold Juice - It's Potent and Guaranteed to Help You Score!

by PackPride17 on Mar 24, 2010 10:20 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

My guess is Edmonton takes Hall and announces it as soon as the lottery is done. I think Boston takes Seguin rather than Fowler or Gromley. The only caveat is that Boston tends to like power forwards and although Seguin is excellent, he may remind them too much of Kessel for their tastes.

by abramsdoug on Mar 25, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I could see Boston taking Seguin, but I don’t think he compares to Kessell. Kessell is a goal scorer plain and simple. From the limited stuff I’ve seen of Seguin, he more of a playmaker. He will score some goals, but I think he is more of a 20 to 25 goal, 50 to 60 assist guy. From what I’ve seen, I would probably compare him to a Henrik Sedin. I’m not saying Boston won’t take him, but they need more of a scorer, a Hall type, than another playmaking center. Krejci and Savard both signed extensions within the past year.

Triple Gold Juice - It's Potent and Guaranteed to Help You Score!

by PackPride17 on Mar 25, 2010 6:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think if we get Seguin they could very well end up moving Staal back to wing. If Seguin turned out as projected, he would be a first liner no question. Equal to if not better than Staal in a few years.

by JussiJuice on Mar 25, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you on two fronts, that I think if the Canes do end up drafting between 3-5, I would guess they would take a defenseman, which wouldn’t be bad in my opinion. However, there is a strong need for more offensive scoring power, but I think we need to draft someone regardless of position that can play for us next year. I think that drafting someone like Nick Bjudstad, although intriguing, will take a much longer time to develop a la Blake Wheeler, same sort of frame and from Minnesota. Personally, Nino, Conolly, and Watson all intrigue me as they have had solid years in juniors, although COnnolly has been hurt. If his injuries check out and he can be a healthy player, I think he would be a solid player.

I still am keeping my fingers crossed that we get the #3 pick, I love seeing us win, but long term we would be better served with the high pick since playoffs are out of the question.

Whats the word on Tarasenko. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/11872/iss_top302010_prospects_february/
has him 5th. Says this about him: “A dynamic and unbelievably skilled offensive player, Tarasenko is as dangerous as they come around the puck…and away from it for that matter.”

by TylerA7707 on Mar 24, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

From everything I have read, he is the real deal. The only mark on his record is that he is playing in the KHL and their lack of transfer agreement with the NHL. There have been some prospects, Kirill Kabanov, that have come to N.A. to ease those fears. I think Tarasenko will go somewhere between 7-15 because of fears over the transfer agreement, although talent wise he is top 5.

by Caniac Kid on Mar 25, 2010 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

They are talking now like Kabanov might fall all the way to the 2nd round. His draft position has been falling hard ever since he got back from his wrist injury. He got benched his first game back (a playoff game) after taking a horrible penalty and then was a healthy scratch the next game.

Could be a 2nd round steal but has attitude issues written all over him.

by JussiJuice on Mar 25, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

And after being a healthy scratch the second game, Kabanov got angry and left his team to return to Russia. His draft stock has fallen considerably.

by JussiJuice on Mar 25, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

If Kabanov falls to the 2nd, we should pick him up there. The kid has some ability and I really could see him develop into a 1st line, scoring winger.

Triple Gold Juice - It's Potent and Guaranteed to Help You Score!

by PackPride17 on Mar 25, 2010 12:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Well he abandoned his team Montcon in the middle of the playoffs after an injury plagued season (Wrist injury). Apparently he had locker room issues with the team the whole year. The only chance Kabanov will get to even show he deserves to a high draft pick is the U-18 World Championships coming up in which he will play for Russia.

Apparently he even has the Canes favorite baggage, a controlling Dad (A-la Jack Johnson). I’d probably still take a chance on him with a 2nd rounder though, low risk – high potential reward.

by JussiJuice on Mar 25, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Seguin, Hall, Connolly, Tarasenko, Kabanov, maybe even Watson are all high end forwards and I think have real potential to become Stars in this league within a few years. I wouldn’t be too upset if we picked any of these up.

My guess is that we will end up with the 3rd overall pick and take Fowler. I’m positive that JR will try to move up and take Seguin but that depends more on what the other teams want. Cam Fowler is great though, definitely a future franchise top-pairing D. He definitely reminds me of a Doughty type talent having a strong defensive game as well as explosive offensive abilities.

by JussiJuice on Mar 25, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

fwiw… I really like that many of you are getting in to the draft. It sucks that it took a really bad year on the ice to do it, but I think you’ll all enjoy hockey that much more. It’s neat (for me) to look at the NHL’s top scorers right now and remember the talk of them heading into their respective drafts.

I seem to remember Mo saying the Staal-Whitney-Jokinen wasn’t as strong a line as prior to the Olympic break and so they broke it up. I also think both Staal’s possible injury and the need to get some other guys going may have factored in at some point.

About them not being as good (read productive) a line after the Olympic break? I’m not sure-it was during a post-game media scrum.

After a pretty extensive search, I still can’t find the audio. Like I said, it was a post-game interview (maybe someone else heard it as well and can point me in the right direction to find it?) and for some reason, those have a harder time finding their way to the permanent audio vaults.

From what I remember, the question was something about why the lines were shifting around and, among other things, he said that they left the Whiteny-Staal-Jokinen line together as long as they could because they didn’t want to change the chemistry on the other lines. The top line wasn’t producing the way it had prior to and immediately after the Olympic break, but since Sutter’s line (and maybe the 3rd line too?) had been working so well, they left the Staal line intact hoping that it would fix itself. It didn’t and so they moved some pieces around.

thanks for the expanded explanation! To me it sounds like if nothing else works, then they will put Jussi back where (in my humble opinion) he belongs.
Honestly though, how do they consider Chad LaRose a better option then on the top line then Jussi Jokinen? Im probably opening a can of worms, but i really think that Jussi deserves to be in on the top line much more then Chad LaRose

ADog mentioned this earlier (and I’m tempted to agree with him) that Jussi may be injured. By taking him off the top line and putting him on a line that, in theory, would face a weaker opponent, there may be less strain on whatever the possible injury is.

From watching Jokineni’s play on video, I think he may well have a sore shoulder. He is having trouble putting as much pace on his shots as he normally can — particularly on one-timers. A sore wrist could cause the same issue, however.

No, you didn’t dream it.

Mo, who can leave no line untouched, “bad-mouthed” the line as no longer being as effective at some presser, just as you recall (although I can’t remember if it was a post-game or a practice day interview…seems like it was the latter).

I suspect the line changes are indeed due to injuries all around, no longer adrenalin-fueled, that are needing to be nursed homeward.

So, yes, drop Jokinen down a line or two and away from the punishers that haunt the top line. Give Staal two speedy wingers that will pick up the trash from his “black hole” shot and go get him the puck whenever possible.

Makes sense.

It definitely could have been a practice interview which would explain why I couldn’t find it.

And +1 to everything else you said, especially the injuries part. I can almost guarantee you that if the team holds a post-mortem after the season ends, it would be filled with “player 1 has injury A” revelations.

Staal should be between Jussi and Witney. Sutter can center Cole and Ruutu — a line that can crash the net and check and score. Dwyer with some speed guys on the third line, and Rod on line 4 (face it, he’ll play next year) with TK and LaRose. Throw in our rapidly developing defensive corps and a healthy Cam, and this team looks good for 10-11.

I think ppl see Samson as being from the same mold as Keith Aucoin. A terrific AHL’er whose game does not translate to the nhl level. Whether that is right or not, I don’t know. I would love to see him prove his critics wrong though.

Samson v. Keith Aucoin

I think Samson is the real deal and is not a Keith Aucoin. Samson is listed at 6’ 194 lbs — which is a very reasonable size for a wing/center. He plays a physical game and had excellent hands. From watching the River Rats games, he has become a very formidable force on the ice. My belief is that either next season or 2011-2012, Samson will be playing full time for the Hurricanes.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. They really needed a big win after last weekend. Dalpe must be ecstatic!

I still don’t get the strong dislike for LaRose. I think that he brings a lot to the game when he is healthy. I do agree that he has had a tough year but seems to be playing well now. I like his attitude and what all he brings.

I love LaRose – and from your signature line, I can see you are indeed kindred souls. nice.

I agree, LaRose>Dwyer, even at LaRoses pay.

I too am a big Papa Smurf fan. His energy is great, he has some scoring ability, he is one of our best forecheckers, and he does anything asked of him. I would love to keep him around for another couple of years, but I think JR will try to trade him this offseason.

OMG! How did I not know about this photo?!?!?!?! And why wasn’t I told that Brandon was giving out hugs at practice?

Surprise! Just happened today at practice and I forgot about it until I saw the posts about Chad. They were on a line together and scored on Cam (wish he had been in the picture too LOL). It was hilarious.

Was this the lacrosse style drills that twitter was all abuzz with earlier today?

That was a very funny twitter narration. I’m going to try to get by today and see McCutie and Dray-man. Not sure a skate will offer the laughs, we’ll see.

Wonder if the Caps flew in last night after their shoot-out win or waiting till today?

Seriously though, any details/background on this one LTD? Or does he just randomly hug all of the members of the “big and tall” line during practice? And if that’s the case, I am fairly short…

There’s something unnerving about that look on Sutter’s face… like he’s enjoying it a little too much.

no. 1 reason I bid on the Try-out with the Canes thingy – Rosie
no. 2 reason – Gleason

It’s most likely not going to happen until next season – so Gleason’s foot better heal up and Rosie better not get traded.

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

OMG – that looks like some sort of hockey-themed senior prom – last dance, Unchained Melody. Sutter does seem to be living a dream in this one. (except you can see Rosey’s beard which sort of mars this reading in a really uncomfortable way).

No offense to Rosey, but if that is making Brandon that happy, we can (and should definitely strive to) do better than that and I may have a suggestion or two. :)

I am going to tell myself that the blissful expression is due to his joy over scoring a goal.

Pfffft… I’m a good 12-15 events behind on photos right now. We should have plenty to keep us busy throughout the entire long off-season.

I think the Rat Pack photo and the Finns’ table tennis auction shot from Casino Night are both extremely good candidates for the next cover.

He should have hugged Ray Whitney like that the day Ray gave him that pass to score a goal and he went back to the bench and said “Wow.”. :)

LaRose

I don’t think it is dislike for LaRose; but it is trying to assess what to do with all the talent that the Hurricanes have at forward — and the unfortunate lack of power forwards. LaRose has a tremendous personality and gives 200% each shift. He makes up for a lack of sophisticated hockey skills with a relentless attitude and an amazing will to win. With all the talent on the team, LaRose probably is going to wind up spending a great deal of time on the fourth line in the Maurice/Francis/Rowe system. In terms of thinking about the Hurricanes team and budget, a player earning what LaRose earns needs to score 20 goals a season. If LaRose does that, he will stay. If he is a 14 goal a season player, he likely will be traded.

by abramsdoug on Mar 25, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be disappointing seeing LaRose on the 4th line. I believe that he has earned top 9 minutes, if not only in a checking line role. I know it probably won’t happen this way, but Chad IMO deserves more ice time than Cole, Samsonov, Brind’Amour, Tlusty, Dwyer, and Bowman. But I also realize that money is a huge factor.
