The Albany River Rats signed free agent Mike McKenzie to an amateur tryout contract earlier this week.  The forward played for St. Lawrence University as a senior this year and was their second leading scorer with 14 goals and 21 assists.

McKenzie attended the Hurricanes prospect and conditioning camp this past summer. I spoke with him after one session and he was thrilled to be invited.  When asked if he was learning much, he responded with an enthusiastic, "Oh yes!"

"It's not everyday you get on ice tips from Ron Francis," he replied. "And the off ice workout sessions with Pete have been tremendous."

On a side note, McKenzie is the son of Bob McKenzie, senior analyst, insider, commentor, and writer for TSN.  Interestingly enough, McKenzie wrote a book about his experiences as a "hockey dad".   (Hockey Dad: True Confessions of a Hockey Parent).  It is supposed to be a good read.

Good luck to the younger McKenzie on his try out.
