All Quiet - For Now: Trade Deadline Day Open Thread
Ray Whitney might be traded and he might not. There is no word yet on Aaron Ward and there are new rumors about Erik Cole. Jim Rutherford's phone must be ringing off the hook.
Come in to chat about things here. If you hear about a rumor, feel free to share. There are no rumor police from TSN to shoot you down. This is a good day to talk about possibilities. It's back to reality tomorrow.
If we see a Canes related breaking story, we will post it and start a new thread to discuss it.

I personally think that it would be a mistake by JR to not get something for Whitney. As wanted as he is out there, i believe that something is better than nothing.
I agree.
I think I said this yesterday but him wanting an extention from what ever team we trade him to scares me a bit. If he stays it looks like JR will sign him for too much money for too long a time.
The Rod Brind’Amour experience should make us all think twice about wanting to lock up older players for more than one year.

I think JR will soften and take a first and a prospect as opposed to a first and a roster player. However, if Raffi Torres gets a first, then there’s no telling what Ray can bring in.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
I think the asking price for ray is right on point. based on what the other deals where and the kind of player ray is, its a good deal for both sides (1st and…)

Whitney, Ward, Yelle, Corvo, Walker All Traded
I agree. In the end with much gnashing of teeth, teams will acquire Whitney for the asking price. Ward’s trade should be announced any moment. Corvo, too, is very valuable to teams in the playoffs and they will make an offer Jim Rutherford can’t turn down. I think Corvo is making a mistake not to instruct his agent to work out a two year extension are a fair price (not maximum UFA price) to stay in Carolina. Corvo is so introspective that he needs nurturing environments to succeed Why take the risk and the psychological pain when the money being offered at Carolina would provide him with financial security for the rest of his life. Additionally, Corvo can extend his playing career by settling down at Carolina. It’s simply too logical for sports agents to comprehend, I guess. Yelle should be attractive as a penalty killing experienced center. Walker is all heart and is versatile. Teams that know him would realize he can help them in the playoff grind. His legs are rested because of his upper body injuries.
The Joy of Aaron Ward trade
This trade is excellent for Carolina. Aaron Ward needed to be banished from Caniac Land. Pogge is a viable goalie prospect as a hedge against untimely injuries. A fourth round pick taken blindfolded among the list of available players at the draft would be better than having A. Ward. Much better than the used skates and broken sticks I would have taken for him.
I personally do not think Whitney is going anywhere. If the Canes were completely out of the playoff chase I say yes. But last night win moved us a point closer. Canes are only 8 points out of the final spot, and frankly are on a “run”. Not gonna mess with the Mojo. As far as A. Ward and Yelle, yes, they really are not figuring into the run anyway. Then again I could be proved completely wrong. We will see…..
THE CANES ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF THE PLAYOFF CHASE. Ergo, you think Whitney is going.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.

My take is that Jim Rutherford is seeing the Whitney/Staal/Jokinen line being totally on fire. He has to like Boychuk/Sutter/Ruutu for next year. Then they have to find a third line center with some size, strength, and Gleason/Ruutu inner rage or perhaps if the Canes get lucky, they are able to draft Seguin. Would Boston rather have Fowler or Seguin with Toronto’s pick? At worst, the Hurricanes get Fowler — which some well-informed participants at CC are advocating even as a #2 pick.
So assume for a moment that the third line is Tlusty/Sequin o Jordan Staalesque center/ Cole
Fourth line could be LaRose/Dwyer/Kostopoulos
It’s non-traditional hockey logic; but running four real lines grinds down opposing teams.
Jim Rutherford has set a price for Whitney and won’t budge. In the GM business if you blink once, you spend the rest of your career being hammered. It’s pure negotiation theory. You’d rather lose a deal and stick to your guns than back down and spend the rest of your professional life in reverse.
The Hurricanes
I actually really like LaRose on that second line. LaRose-Sutter-Ruutu, I just like that. Also, with the Panthers cleaning house and how we are playing, I say the 4th overall pick is the best we can expect and it might be lower than that. So, we’re probably out of the running for the top 3.
The Triple Golden One, Eric Staal!
I’m not sold on LaRose being on the second line. I’m as big of a fan of LaRose as it comes, but he’s not a guy who can create his own shot/goal, and I think that’s a requirement for being in the top six. He does will with others who can and has an advantage over many other teams third liners, plus he’s in a position where he can play with Staal if Staal is getting double shifted. The Staal double shifts were where many of his goals came last season.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Regarding the Wizard, I just think he has so much value to a playoff push that some GM is going to make Ray and JR a sweet deal to get him.

The Canes players have an earlier tee time this year….not a chance of making the playoffs even though not mathmatically eliminated. Wait til we play OTT,PENS,CAPS,BRUINS…
everyone is seems convinced that the Canes can’t make the playoffs, so how did Washington com from 10 points back in the last month and knock us out of the playoffs? What is different now?
They only had to jump over one team. Us.

So my question is – in regards to Whitney – Is JR overplaying his hand or drinking the playoff Kool-Aid…
Or a bit of both..or something else..
Thoughts?

TORONTO _ The biggest piece at the NHL trade deadline is at a standstill.
While Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford wants to move Ray Whitney before the 3 p.m. tomorrow, the club is in a holding pattern.
There is no shortage of interest in Whitney but he still maintains he wants an extension. If it stays that way, he may not be going anywhere.
Teams don’t want to give him a two-year, $7 million deal. Only Los Angeles has been given permission to this point and they failed to get the deal done. Will that stance change? It could. We will be keeping an eye.

Burke thought his team would be better this year. Also, don’t forget he can trade Kaberle and get one of those firsts back.
Still think Toronto lost that deal. Should have offered Kessel an offer sheet and given up a third in 2010 as opposed to the first in 2011, but hindsight is 20/20.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
I know Burke didn’t want to use the offer sheet, but, when he had Boston over the barrel after he acquired his second round pick back and had the option to use the offer sheet there was no reason to give up this years and next years first. I could have seen a second next year as opposed to a first, then maybe it’s not too bad.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
I think everyone thought they would be better than this. I don’t think they will be much better next year unless they make some other moves. Giggy is an upgrade in net, but I think his deficiencies were masked for a long time by Anaheim’s system….
Kaberle for their first to Boston would go along way in recouping their loss, for certain.
Whitney's going...
…count on it.
Makes no sense whatsoever for him not to move somewhere. Too much damage to reputation and contract value if he does not. Extension here now even in doubt, unless he offers big-time “hometown” discount, which also works against his interests. Probably no NTC this time, either, unless further discounts offered.
He just wants to pick the spot and the situation. Extension would be nice, but at the end of the day trade deadline, he’ll take the best location/situation on the table, extension or not.
Fun to watch this giant game of multi-player chicken play out. But there will be a deal. Count on it.
As long as we can get some dead weight off of the team I’ll be alright. So hopefully we can move Yelle, Ward, and Cole. The only way I want to see Whitney and/or Corvo leaving is if we get a good first rounder or young player in return. That’s my stance and I’m sticking to it.
But honestly, he’s off the team come the offseason anyway so I guess he really doesn’t matter one way or the other. It’d be nice to get a late round pick for him though. Now if we could just convince Brind’amour to retire…

I honestly think that they might just keep Ray around...
Most teams might not be willing to give us the 1st round pick and a player in return, b/c that is the value I see in Whitney. Maybe signed in the off-season for 2-3 years and retires at the end. Ray would become a great coach or member of the Canes staff. :)
Dear Mr. Rutherford. Please make every effort to re-sign Ray Whitney to the Canes in the off-season so he retires here. Thank you! :)
You HAVE to trade Ray…there is no garauntee he’ll sign here in the offseason, hes an UFA!!!!!!
Something WILL happen, but probably really LATE
I’m saying if we don’t hear it by 1 we won’t hear of the deal until after 3:00. It will go down so close to the deadline that it won’t be announced until 3:30 a la Cole last year.

agreed…and IMO some team will end up getting a bargain on whitney as I dont think a team will meet JR’s asking price…I think Ray will just get a first
Depends on what you mean. Picard is a roster player and Tlusty is a prospect. So i really think it will just be depending on the player not necessarily if he has logged over 160 games or so.

by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions
So far it seems are play is getting better BECAUSE of the youth, so yeah, I encourage more trades for youth. If we fade towards the end then fine, at least we have a bright future and a high draft pick. But if we make the playoffs then do you really think we’ll be an early exit?? I mean if we somehow make the playoffs it’d be one of the biggest comeback in NHL and we’d be by far the hottest team in the NHL. Every team would fear us.
hard to put the words ‘fear’ and ‘canes’ together in same sentence; i love the play now but we are just not strong and deep enough to make a difference……never mind the small point that we’re 8 points out of LAST place for playoffs.
too much ifs and whens and maybes, JR has got to move and fix this team now.
by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
All I’m saying is that if we somehow make the playoffs, that would mean we’d have to have a closing record of like 21 wins and 4 losses. That’s insane. How would you not fear that team?

yup, I’d like to see the canes in it for sure, would be a great story and with staal leading the team and maybe a rookie in the pipes, we could make some move. I hope we do it with whitney, ward, corvo and cole gone- imagine the return we would get for all of them packed up and outta here? picks, youth and money to spend.
by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 11:17 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t think we’re getting into the tournament, not by a long shot. However, if in some parallel universe they were able to win all of their remaining games and make it, momentum plays a huge role in the NHL, moreso than any other major sport, every season we see 6, 7 and 8 seeds that have had to play great hockey for a month to get into the postseason and beat top seeds that have spent that time coasting through their schedule. In this parallel universe I can see the Canes making it to at least the second round.

I disagree. It is not Whitney’s fault or Maurice’s fault that (1) Aaron ward was awful through the first twenty to twenty-five games; (2) Wallin was slow and really hated the chest on chest, pound your defensive assignment into the Club Row style of Maurice/Francis/Rowe hockey; (3) Brind’Amour was playing top 6 minutes (20 minutes a game) and was far too slow to keep up and lacked the desire to finish even one check a game; and (4) Yelle was terrible at the start of he season with stupid, untimely penalties, etc. I agree that Whitney and Cullen and perhaps Corvo are having their careers and family lives changed, perhaps for the worst, because of the miscues of other veterans. I know it is all part of NHL hockey, but that aspect upsets me at a personal level. I really hold a deep resentment toward A. Ward, Wallin, Yelle, and Brind’Amour because I think they didn’t man up and they let down their friends.

I just want a draft pick or a young player that I can be excited about when this is all said and done. I’m excited about Peters but that does me a whole hell of a lot of good because we’ll never see him here extensively.
I’d rather they keep Cole, Whitney, and Corvo myself. 8 points from a playoff spot….
by OriginalCaniac on Mar 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions
8 points is one thing, but 8 points and 5 teams to jump is tough. Especially with the hard schedule we have. Besides, when was the last time Cole contributed anyway? At least now he could contribute towards a 2nd round draft pick.
Don’t look at the amount of teams we have to pass. I’m sure it looks daunting that way. 8 points can be made up in as little as 8 games. The way we;ve been playing, why can;t we do it?
by OriginalCaniac on Mar 3, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions
Well we can certainly win 8 straight games. But we also would have to count on all 5 of those teams losing more than half of their next 8.
All I’m saying is we shouldn’t just throw in the towel. Deal AWard for a mid pick if the opportunity presents itself. If we can’t get premium return for Whitney, then why not take a run? That’s what offseason is for…we have a lot of picks this year and a nice prospect cupboard right now.
by OriginalCaniac on Mar 3, 2010 11:32 AM EST up reply actions
Us making a run now does nothing to stop the on again off again rollercoster ride we have had this decade.
We need to stink it up or trade for a top draft pick. Jussi leads our team in goals scored. I love Jussi but that says somthing

Sorry….I’m not one of the majority it seems that think this season is lost. If we can’t resign him, well, we can’t resign him. But he’s our best scoring winger, and with 20 games left there is still plenty of time to make the playoffs.

Again….sorry….glass half full here. 8 points in 20 games. The way we’re playing, I think it is very possible. And like last year, if we can just get in, even as an 8-seed, we have a good mix of experience and youth to make a good run.

I like Peters, but with the investment into Ward and his style of goaltending he needs to be on a team that can afford to give him plenty of playing time. That place isn’t here when Cam’s healthy. So I could see Peters on the way out and Pogge take his place at the AHL level.

I am convinced Aaron Ward was miserable at Carolina and never fit in. I don’t detest him; but I am over-joyed at the thought neither he nor Wallin will ever torpedo another Hurricanes game with their mistakes.
The dude bought a box for soldiers, and showed up for a season ticket holders signing the day he got placed on waivers. He’s a stand up guy as a person. His hockey play may be suspect at time, but he’s a good person.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
I think there is much to admire about Aaron Ward as a person. I do not think it was admirable that he was not mentally ready to play for the Hurricanes. There must be a story there we will never know. He has given much to the community and is a fine human being.
Like many a hockey player, he may of overestimated his skill going in to his late thirties. That happens.
From my wife, reading over my shoulder “I’m looking at you here, Brind’Amour”
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
The bitterness here over AWard really mystifies me.
He was far from the only Cane to have a godawful start to the season, and I’m pretty damn sure it’s not that he didn’t want to be here. People are putting an awful lot of stock in a single rumor from the Boston sports press.
Besides, it’s hard to blame any older player in the last year of their existing contract for wanting to go somewhere they’re in the hunt.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Ward says Maurice came down and got him and told him while watching the NHL gamecenter in the training room.
Hopefully he heard it from Maurice before NHL Network. Thinking of Justin Williams…

Maybe he and Bret Hedican can pair up again in Battle of California style.

Another wow:

Canes are working on moving at least one more player. With Ward deal and another salary expected to go, it’s likely Ray Whitney stays in Car

I’m still of the mind set that the person putting out that Ray is to stay is the same one trying to get the most value out of him (JR).
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
But still – this is some pretty steely “posturing”. Usually they use the lesser media hounds to play these games.

Carolina’s Scott Walker is a target for some teams. Washington and Nashville are two teams who might like his grit and experience.

I like it to. But if they trade Scotty it should be to a division foe of the Ducks.

with less than 3 hours to go....
pretty quiet. The realities of the cap have made this day less stellar than it used it be……. Wow I can’t believe I am pining for pre lockout conditions!
yeah i does seem that way. plus we’ve already had one deadline.

Walker is leaving ice at practice
LTD is Tweeting that the coach is taking Walker off the ice at practice

Hurricaners trade Walker to Capitals – from TFP

If that’s the case, I’m happy for Scotty…give him one more pull at the Cup…but it will be wierd cause w/play the caps about 74 more times this month…
that would be 76 more times this month, but whos counting?

Looking at the cap numbers
We got Tommy K for a steal

that is ridiculous...
walker is not worth a 7th round pick. JR is definitely on the crack pipe today.
Dear Mr. Rutherford. Please make every effort to re-sign Ray Whitney to the Canes in the off-season so he retires here. Thank you! :)

Yep. PK said “get ’em out of here”.
I’d hate to think I spent $50M+ on that bunch for lollygagging all over the ice for the first few months of the season.
you lollygag to the bench, you lollygag to the lockroom, you lollygag to the ice… YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MAKES YOU?
by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions
you know when you look at it, you have to say, roughly the same group of guys is now looking like world beaters. So maybe it had less to do with the team assembled and more to do with how well they were prepared…….coaching anyone?
ive never questioned the talent of the team. I don’t really know.

congrads Scotty
I would HATE to see the Caps win the Cup… but I would love to see Scott Walker win it.

Look, you can say what you will but this is a truly, classy move by JR….there’s no way he makes this trade except to give Scotty a shot…truly a “heart over head” move….I’m happy to get anything back but I’m really happy for Scott Walker. Give it you best shot, Scotty, but don’t play well against us…
Look at it this way....
Not that I wish this at all but if Scotty gets hurt and misses most of the rest of our season then at least we got something for him.

Small potatoes out
Ward and Walker are gone. Only Yelle remains of the small potatoes players. Now time to focus on Corvo and Whitney.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
bye Scotty & Aaron…it was real and hopefully Scotty will finally get That RING !!
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
It would be bittersweet, but I would like to see Walker get a ring even if it’s with Washington.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
itll take more than scotty for me to feel anything except anger and rage at washington winning the cup…..
Oh no...
Still won’t be happy Washington wins the cup.
But I’d be happy SCOTTY won the cup. ;)

Haha…I was just thinking…what if somehow we make the playoffs and match up against the Caps in the first round and then beat them. How would Scotty be feeling?
althoguht, just to say it
how much would it suck for scotty if we did make the playoffs and then beat wash in the first round. just sayin
yes it would
suck for that to happen but my hope is the Scotty with the Caps ould get that ring
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
Things are picking up!
It’s 12:30, the trades are picking up. It’s all happening.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
my hangover is making me emotional (thanks guys)
ice_chip Walker very emotional about leaving. Gave Rod Brind’Amour a big hug and handshake.
Amen
you have to admit fior a team the size the Canes are…at times there are and can be a very class act …as far as the way people are assemilated ( no not the borg either) into the organization…i am happy for Scotty
Relax !! Even Micro Wave Popcorn takes time !! Go Canes !!
LOL
It’s like these guys are just randomly skating around the ice waiting to see which one gets hauled out back and shot. When you get chosen you get one last good bye with Brindy.
Why would you move out UFA to re-sign someone. Walker had no money committed to him next season. That doesn’t add up.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
It has to do with saving money this year and being able to financially afford to keep Whitney. If Whitney stays and is not traded at the deadline, he is likely to re-sign. There is no direct one to one correlation; but the issues are related. I really admire Walker, but I would much rather the money allocated for salary go to Whitney.
yep posturing. we know how it really is man.

I’d like to get either Mueller or Porter….both even….What about a deal still in the works w/PHX…any rumors?
is it possible that with the acquisition of Pogge that Legace may be moved? He does bring experience, depth, etc.. and Peters looks capable of handling the remainder of the season as top dog.
I don’t see it happening, as they need Murphy to be getting starts in the A, bringing him up to warm the pine in the bigs hurst his development, IMO. Plus Pogge has no business in a NHL sweater at this point either.
If Cam was healthy, yeah, I think that was the master plan.
