Scott Walker Traded to Washington For Seventh Rounder

It has been confirmed throughout the "Twitter Universe" that Carolina Hurricanes forward Scott Walker has been traded to the Washington Capitals for a seventh round draft pick.

Walker recently had shoulder surgery and had missed the previous 21 games before suiting up in Toronto last night.  The Canes are in full blown cost-cutting mode and will save the balance of his 2.5 million dollar salary, as well as Ward's.

A previous 20 goal scorer and great contributor in last season's playoffs, Walker had a disappointing season this year.

Walker will be GREATLY missed.

The only upside to this is that Scott now has a hell of a chance to get his name on the cup.

I will still wear my Walker jersey with pride.

GOOD LUCK SCOTTY!

Will be sad to see Scotty playing on the Caps.

I dunno, it gives me an even better reason to cheer for them when they battle for the Stanley Cup. c:

BETTER reason to cheer for the Caps……

Does not compute.

Walker getting his name on Lord Stanley

is the ONLY reason

If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

He thanked Jim Rutherford for trading him and for the opportunity. Waived his “no-trade” clause to make the deal

I have laid my Scott Walker bobblehead face down on my cubicle shelf at work. :(

Dear Mr. Rutherford. Please make every effort to re-sign Ray Whitney to the Canes in the off-season so he retires here. Thank you! :)

Scott Walker and Trade

This trade gives Walker a chance to get a Stanley Cup and possibly to extend his career. There was no roster space for Walker and there was no way he would be re-signed. Walker is a true warrior and a tremendous teammate. He deserves the best. I don’t think the Hurricanes are simply in cost containment mode. I think they are helping players continue with their careers rather than leaving them to fend for themselves when their contract expires. The Caps will love Walker and will appreciate his grit in the playoffs.

Shedding AWard and Walker are purely salary moves. They’re both unrestricted free agents and weren’t earning their keep. That’s great and all, but the return we got for them is almost meaningless. How often do you hear about a 5th or 7th round draft pick turning into a long tenured NHLer that make contributions?

Don’t get me wrong, those moves were necessary. As the clock continues to tick down to zero, moving Corvo and Whitney seems less likely. I had thought Corvo for Mueller would have been a solid trade, but Morris going back to Phoenix pushed that possibility to very slim; ultimately Mueller went to Colorado for Wolski anyway. Siedenberg to Boston is another trade that seemingly has eliminated a trade partner for Corvo.
LA has failed to add anyway so far, thus there is still an obvious option for Whitney, but it doesn’t seem like the guarantee it once was.

Off the top of my head, Zetterberg was a 7th round pick.

He is the exception not the rule, but these picks aren’t worthless.

by Iggy Reilly on Mar 3, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I stand corrected, worthless was not the correct word to use. More appropriate would be that they have a very small chance of turning into something significant.

Craig Adams. 9th round (223 overall). The very last selection of the 1996 draft (Whalers).

Got his name on the Stanley Cup. Twice.

we have never been in a more obvious seller position

and we haven’t sold at all. What is he DOING?

5-3. How abOOT that!!!???

by DidJussiThat? on Mar 3, 2010 1:44 PM EST reply actions

Plenty of time left.

Need to get a good return on the pieces.

by Iggy Reilly on Mar 3, 2010 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Otherwise "fire sales"

only hurt the seller.

If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

by lcd2you on Mar 3, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed.

If people are offering us scraps then we don’t need to make a move. If the right one is there, they will do it.

Walker

Greetings from Washington! Being a Caps fan, I am definitely siked to have Scottie up here in DC. From what it sounds like from you fans, he is one hell of a player. I remember watching him play and even though he is not a numbers kind of guy, his energy and intangibles impeccable. Oh more breaking news….we just signed Eric Belanger from Minnesota…But anyways, even though we are rivals in the division, we love hearing your support and definitely hope to not disappoint you with a potential cup for Walker!

by CapsDieHard on Mar 3, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Walker will really help the Caps. He is totally fearless and comes to the aid of his teammates. He has plenty of speed and quickness. He would literally skate through the boards and into the stands if a coach asked him to do so. If he can stay healthy, you have a tremendous player who is very, very versatile. He deserves a Stanley Cup and I hope OV and crew can get him one this year.

Walker

Walker to the Bruins would have been cool. Wouldn’t take Beantown long to forget the past and start loving Scotty long time.

by Scott Cason on Mar 3, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

hey Scott! that would have been ironic, him going to the Bruins

I find it very interesting that it has been repeatedly said that Whitney for a 1st and a prospect is too high. Jeff Halpern to LA for Ted Purcell and a 3rd. Eric Belanger to DC for a 2nd. Whitney is superior to both of those players, yet what is expected in return is too much?

I understand some of the debate or conflict is not over what the Canes may be asking for, but rather what Whitney wants if he signs an extension. I, though, can’t see why he wouldn’t accept a trade to a playoff team, play out the year, and restart his negotiations for a deal to his liking this summer.

I hope this last hour provides some more helpful trades for us, namely involving Whitney, Corvo and maybe Cole or Larose.

P.S. I love al these players and my desire to see them traded is not because of a dislike for them, but rather I see the opportunity to acquire meaningful prospects or draft picks that will aid in the long term of the franchise (especially Corvo and Whitney as we could lose them this summer for no return)

by Caniac Kid on Mar 3, 2010 1:58 PM EST reply actions

i don’t think Cole’s going anywhere, Mo loves him too much. but JR has surprised me before…

by silent_shadow36 on Mar 3, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I respectfully disagree. I am thrilled A. Ward is gone. I am sorry that it was necessary for Scott Walker to be traded, but glad he is near his family and has a shot at a Stanley Cup. Thus far we have saved a significant amount of cash, traded Wallin and A. Ward, neither of whom would be re-signed. Traded Cullen for a second round pick and Picard. Even if nothing else happens, the Hurricanes are a stronger team.

someone one facebook complained

that they didn’t want to say “Bye Aaron Ward”

I said that “bye” was better than the verb I have been using at the beginning of that sentence all year.

See ya, Scotty.

just watched the video (wipes tears), so sad he’s leaving but excited for his post-season :(
