Trade Deadline Day Open Thread, Volume II
It's coming down to the wire. Will the Canes be able to pick up any valuable assets? Will "The Wizard" waive his no trade clause? Will Joe Corvo and others be moved?

Vat's not to love about Bella?
Bella was warm and charming. Lifelong supporter of all civil rights, especially women and minorities. She spoke at Columbia Univ many times, I heard her speak once. Funny and real. She and Betty Friedan are the ‘old time’ women’s rights activists (the one’s who never thought you had to “hate” the enemy or become a lesbian in the process).

We caniacs are a lucky bunch...
Thanks to CanesCountry for keeping us all up to date, and as always being a great central location for info and discussion.
Just saw this interesting fact on twitter…
With 1 hr left till deadline, there have been 13 trades. Number of trades last four years, respectively: 22, 25, 25, 25
13 trades….Ray whitney is #13….maybe its fate that he is supposed to be traded next or not at all?
Maybe i am just OD’d on social media today….
Hmm. Another ESPN blurb:
Pierre LeBrun: Go Canes…. just heard from Carolina front office source… Whitney likely staying but Joe Corvo could be on the move in next 45 mintes….
Slightly off topic, but I was in the building for practice today. I use the term “practice” loosely as there was very little structure and they were on and off pretty quick. Ray was in a VERY good mood, smiling and joking around. So were Corvo and Cole. In fact the mood in general was pretty uptempo, surprisingly so.
I got there after AWard had already said his goodbyes, which apparently he said on the ice to a lot of the team. I was looking in another direction and turned around quickly just in time to see Scott Walker head off with the coach, followed by a media trail.
Anyhow FWIW

Here are my guesses. Yes, Corvo and Whitney get traded at the last minute. There will be some kind of wild surprise. A team like Philadelphia or Boston coming out of the wood work. Yelle, too, will be traded at the last minute, I think.
I am hoping for a different result. I think I would try the approach of signing Whitney and Corvo to reasonable extensions and set sail for next season.
Whatever happens,
I still want to see the Canes make the playoffs

You do call one to say why you didn’t trade Whitney. Just to throw some gas on the fire.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Or for an official goodbye statement on AWard and Walker.
Can’t draw much from this.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Well, if it’s at 3:15 and not now that means JR’s still working on deals.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Not necessarily.
He’d be an idiot to schedule a presser before 3, when another GM could still call him. That doesn’t mean something is or is not actively happening.
People are reading too much into things.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Don't you understand?
It’s clear proof he’s trading Staal and 14 draft picks to Eklund for a bag of pucks!

i don’t have a problem with this. we all know he is a good player. everyone keeps building him up to be such a good player that we should get a good return. but in my opinion, we are hanging on to a very good player, even if he is getting near the end of his career. ray is a good player and i’m glad he isn’t going anywhere. and before i get bashed for that, i completely understand that we could have used that trade to help rebuild the team. i just don’t think it’s a bad thing keeping him.

Personally, I think the NTC/Whitney’s desire to have a 3 yr deal hurt the most. JR’s rumored asking price didn’t help either

I’m not down on Whitney, but this whole damn thing. We are not going anywhere this year and we got nothing at the trade deadline. This was a big tease and a big disappointment. It’s JR’s fault to give him a NTC and maybe ask other teams for to much in return for Ray.
Ray’s a good guy and I wanted him resigned for next year, but we as fan and the organization missed out on improving the future.

This is the nightmare scenario. They have played themselves out of a top pick, Moved NEITHER Corvo or Whitney, and look at picking somewhere between 5-10 in a pretty weak draft. This is really bad.

Save money for the remainder of the year
JR has to cut losses for his boss.
His salary doubles after this season. 1.3 million for a 3rd pairing defenseman is way too much, especially with all of the blueline talent in Albany.

all the blue line talent in albany?
Which Albany are we talking about? McBain Aint ready, Borer may never be now, Carson is already up. So who are we talking about, Harrison? Conboy?

But it’s in with the not much. There are a few piece acquired, but not much. With Ray not moving the re-building doesn’t get jump started. I fear this team will be bad for a while now.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
If Ray gets more than a 1 year deal I’ll agree with you, but for now we’ve cleared up some space and money. Don’t forget about free agency this summer…
Still not a crook!
Don't forget about pre-draft deals.
We have a lot of picks.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Which Players Who Left Won't Be Replaced By Better Players
Cullen — great person; very speedy; not in love with the physical game; would be a third line center next season and may be re-signed
Wallin — the team is vastly better on defense without him
Corvo — very talented; had a little of a rough season due to confidence issues; probably will test the UFA market and not re-sign
Walker — great teammate; spent the last two years battling injuries; would not be re-signed;
Yelle — had an horrific start and put on waivers; would not be re-signed; healthy scratch an wouldn’t play on the merits;
Reed — very fast and quick; tons of talent;but very long term project and wouldn’t play above more talented forwards at Albany/Charlotte
Alberts - the most physical defenseman on the team; high upside in terms of physicality; not much offense; a #5#6 defenseman who would battle next year to play due to more talented players from Albany/Charlotte who fit #4-#6 spots; his hitting will be missed
Aaron Ward – would not be re-signed; his flop at the start of the season is over-discussed; the team is improved with his absence
In short, only Corvo is a player who doesn’t have an equally talented person taking his specific spot. I much prefer Sutter as a second line center, even though Cullen is a talented, NHL quality center.
For those players, the Hurricanes obtained a significant number of draft choices and some talented young players. Picard and Osala will help the Hurricanes in the short and the long run.
Well slap my ass and call me Judy.
I didn’t think there was any way Ray Whitney would still be a Hurricane at 4:00 pm today.

this is kind of off topic, but i was just looking up some info on our new Finn Osala, and under his bio it says
Admires fellow Finns Saku Koivu, Teemu Selanne and Jari Kurri … Also looks up to Erik Cole of the Edmonton Oilers. (now Hurricanes (?))
If we’re talking about the pre-Orpik Cole, I’m all for that.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
So mad at Ray
And this team. Just furious at both. Didn’t get better on the front end, either now or in the future. Got worse on the back end. Nothing definitive for next season. This is why this team is not a consistent playoff contender.
I’m booing Ray tomorrow night.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Heard Pothier wasn’t all that bad. Disappointed we never got another first though. That sucked.
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
If that is the case then it is to bad we couldn’t just have gotten a first for corvo. Perhaps pothier will be like Picard?
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
Pothier is 32 or so and injury prone. We took the salary back to make the deal. Pothier won’t be back.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Don’t be mad at Ray, he did what he thought was best for him. Expect to hear another presser in the next few months regarding his extension. Booo JR, he is the one who handcuffed the team with NMC’s and NTC’s.
If he wanted to play here next year, then moving out now and getting something to help next year would have been in his best interests.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
nhl_canes Rutherford said only deal he took to Whitney was from a western conference team one month ago. Nothing today.
It also says...
…that Ray wasn’t as valuable as everyone here seemed to think. Or JR would have had deals to take to him.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
We cleared salary and space. That’s how you build for the future. We have talent in the system and a ton of 2nd round picks this year. I wish we could have moved Whitney because he’s the only one who could have actually brought back someone who can contribute immediately.
Still not a crook!
We cleared space that was coming off the books. And if you think free agents signings are how you build for the future ask Montreal how their season is going.
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
Right, and we got something for that space that was coming off the books instead of nothing.
Still not a crook!

they’ll porbably give to us and JR will trade it to Washington for 4th rounder and a Latvian D prospect simply known as Bipkey.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions
I actually don’t think the Canes should….the beef 10 years ago was that the area around the arena still wasn’t developed.
SInce then only Damon’s II (aka Backyard Bistro) opened.
The only thing I can think of how they can get it – is a sympathy from the league with the team needing the boost financially next season
by Adam's Journey on Mar 3, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions
it was more about hotels (nicer hotels) and convention space. Raleigh has met both those demands now. I don’t think the area around the arena means much.
by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions
true North Hills was a dump in 2001. I don’t know the Convention Center seems too detatched from the venue for a Fan Fest.
Though we tailgate and love it…i’d like to see some more development in the area – hopefully the Edwards Mill extension to 54 will help. Be great for postgame like Nashville or Columbus
by Adam's Journey on Mar 3, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions
I’ll try and recap again…let’s see in this year’s draft we have:
1- 1st round pick
3 – 2nd round picks
2 – 3rd round picks
1 – 4th round pick
1 – 5th round pick
2 – 6th round picks
2 – 7th round picks
Plus we have an extra 2nd in 2011. I would bet that we trade a player and a couple of picks for another 1st rounder…two 1st rounders and 2 second rounders would be sweet this year….
Plus we picked up a nice player in Picard and a prototypical prospect in Osala (big, fast, maybe needed another opportunity). Not too bad…
Kinda sucks now, because none of those picks will mean anything until 4 or 5 years from now.

Oskar Osala
Here’s some more on Oskar Osala. He sounds like exactly the kind of player I think the Hurricanes need. He also meets the test of being a Finnish player; and that pre-disposes me into thinking he plays with heart.
Here’s the URL for the cached version. Hockeys Future’s sign it bogged down. Ithas a detailed analysis of Osala. I am continuing to check for more information.

yes, I do. Corvo was leaving after this season anyways. Instead of getting nothing for him but hugs goodbye, we now get Osala and next years 2nd. Yes, Corvo being traded now will help us in the future.

Apparently we were set up for a cup run next year if JR hadn’t screwed everything up today…
Still not a crook!
Stupid JR. He doesn’t know the first thing about hockey. :rolls eyes:
That being said-I’m still less than pleased with the Albe trade. And the no Luca Caputi thing.
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."
Gleason for Emperor!
He was a good player, but nothing more than a 3rd pairing d-man who was set to double his salary after this season. We picked up two blueline prospects today, plus Rodney, McBain, and Borer are still in Albany. All five will make less than Albe would have next season.
Still not a crook!
This was in Chip's Canes Now post.
Rutherford estimated the Canes would save a little more than $2 million this year with the trades. He said Zach Boychuk and Jay Harrison would be recalled from Albany (AHL).
Did anyone else here Harrison was getting called up? I thought that was just speculation on our part.

Still though they make less money for a reason-they are unproven. McBain has yet to see NHL ice, Borer may not be ready to go straight to the NHL next season and Rodney has been passed over for a call-up a few times this season.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not getting my hopes up for next season just yet. :shrugs:
"This guy is as meat and potatoes as there is of a man."

No, no, we were going on a run THIS year!
If JR’s being 100% candid about his reasoning for keeping Whitney, I don’t like it, because making the playoff race interesting is unrealistic.
I don’t think that’s the case, though. I think the rumor mill may have grossly overstated Whitney’s market value (especially after he killed the LAK trade), and JR got lowballed. If all he got offered was, say, a second and a sixth or a C-minus prospect, by comparison keeping Whitney around to make the last month of the season watchable for paying customers might be worth his remaining salary from a ticket sales standpoint.
That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.
Enough Already!!
Sooooooooo much negativity!!! lighten up all! Did someone shoot ur puppy?
uh-oh. Good thing we got pogge, because JR would have to sign tripp as a backup.

Oh my, two NHL defensemen, the walking wounded in Pothier and rats elsewhere.

the only reason I ssay that is I know we are a good team and this is not going to happen every year. If we can get a scorer playing on Staals line ( i mean a superstar) we could be a great team. They dont grow on trees. This is an easy way to get one.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions
I think the team is decent, and has some good pieces. I don’t think the team is very good though. Without moving Ray it’s going to be difficult to get out of that 11th to 7th place range. It’s going to take a couple more lean years and high draft picks. Even if Whitney stays he’s only got so many productive years left in him. What happens when his production drops off? How will that be replaced?
Do not doubt the pimp hand.
here comes the second overall pick (i am excited about that actually)

next year a different story; they have to put a solid competitive team on the ice. might be the most important offseason ever for the Canes. Tough economy, bad team, small market. JR must execute and balance the youth with NHL’ers ready to contribute.
