It's coming down to the wire.  Will the Canes be able to pick up any valuable assets?  Will "The Wizard" waive his no trade clause?  Will Joe Corvo and others be moved?

Vat's not to love about Bella?

Bella was warm and charming. Lifelong supporter of all civil rights, especially women and minorities. She spoke at Columbia Univ many times, I heard her speak once. Funny and real. She and Betty Friedan are the ‘old time’ women’s rights activists (the one’s who never thought you had to “hate” the enemy or become a lesbian in the process).

We caniacs are a lucky bunch...

Thanks to CanesCountry for keeping us all up to date, and as always being a great central location for info and discussion.

Just saw this interesting fact on twitter…

With 1 hr left till deadline, there have been 13 trades. Number of trades last four years, respectively: 22, 25, 25, 25

13 trades….Ray whitney is #13….maybe its fate that he is supposed to be traded next or not at all?

Maybe i am just OD’d on social media today….

by camwardsaysno on Mar 3, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Hmm. Another ESPN blurb:

Pierre LeBrun: Go Canes…. just heard from Carolina front office source… Whitney likely staying but Joe Corvo could be on the move in next 45 mintes….

by Tachi828 on Mar 3, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Slightly off topic, but I was in the building for practice today. I use the term “practice” loosely as there was very little structure and they were on and off pretty quick. Ray was in a VERY good mood, smiling and joking around. So were Corvo and Cole. In fact the mood in general was pretty uptempo, surprisingly so.

I got there after AWard had already said his goodbyes, which apparently he said on the ice to a lot of the team. I was looking in another direction and turned around quickly just in time to see Scott Walker head off with the coach, followed by a media trail.

Anyhow FWIW

Here are my guesses. Yes, Corvo and Whitney get traded at the last minute. There will be some kind of wild surprise. A team like Philadelphia or Boston coming out of the wood work. Yelle, too, will be traded at the last minute, I think.

I am hoping for a different result. I think I would try the approach of signing Whitney and Corvo to reasonable extensions and set sail for next season.

Since we’re dumping salary, wouldn’t picks be all we get anyways? Now we’re stuck with only a billion picks, instead of eleventy-billion.

Sure, I’d like to see Whitney get us something good if we can get him back at the end of the season, but why exactly is this destroying the fabric of reality?

by Raccoon Fink on Mar 3, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

So with Whitney most likely staying…are people happy or will there be a small bit of backlash? (Depends on the 3:15 presser).

Personally, I think the NTC/Whitney’s desire to have a 3 yr deal hurt the most. JR’s rumored asking price didn’t help either

Dear Mr. Rutherford. Please make every effort to re-sign Ray Whitney to the Canes in the off-season so he retires here. Thank you! :)

Corvo's gonna loooooooove the Caps media and their accredited bloggers.

I’m not sure what need he fills for Washington either.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see him back on JR’s doorstep, hat in hand, on 1 July. I think this is the right kind of place for him.

I yield to no one in my hatred of the Caps...

…ever since people who I couldn’t drag to a game there with free tickets and beers when I lived up there started talking smack to me on Facebook.

But it’s a business, Osala’s a pretty decent prospect, and he’s out of there after this year. I’m also not convinced he makes their team better.

I’m a little more upset about the Walker deal, because he does fill a need for them.

Which Players Who Left Won't Be Replaced By Better Players

Cullen — great person; very speedy; not in love with the physical game; would be a third line center next season and may be re-signed

Wallin — the team is vastly better on defense without him

Corvo — very talented; had a little of a rough season due to confidence issues; probably will test the UFA market and not re-sign

Walker — great teammate; spent the last two years battling injuries; would not be re-signed;

Yelle — had an horrific start and put on waivers; would not be re-signed; healthy scratch an wouldn’t play on the merits;

Reed — very fast and quick; tons of talent;but very long term project and wouldn’t play above more talented forwards at Albany/Charlotte

Alberts - the most physical defenseman on the team; high upside in terms of physicality; not much offense; a #5#6 defenseman who would battle next year to play due to more talented players from Albany/Charlotte who fit #4-#6 spots; his hitting will be missed

Aaron Ward – would not be re-signed; his flop at the start of the season is over-discussed; the team is improved with his absence

In short, only Corvo is a player who doesn’t have an equally talented person taking his specific spot. I much prefer Sutter as a second line center, even though Cullen is a talented, NHL quality center.

For those players, the Hurricanes obtained a significant number of draft choices and some talented young players. Picard and Osala will help the Hurricanes in the short and the long run.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I actually don’t think the Canes should….the beef 10 years ago was that the area around the arena still wasn’t developed.

SInce then only Damon’s II (aka Backyard Bistro) opened.

The only thing I can think of how they can get it – is a sympathy from the league with the team needing the boost financially next season

by Adam's Journey on Mar 3, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

it was more about hotels (nicer hotels) and convention space. Raleigh has met both those demands now. I don’t think the area around the arena means much.

It can be a deciding factor, but it’s not requisite.

true North Hills was a dump in 2001. I don’t know the Convention Center seems too detatched from the venue for a Fan Fest.

Though we tailgate and love it…i’d like to see some more development in the area – hopefully the Edwards Mill extension to 54 will help. Be great for postgame like Nashville or Columbus

by Adam's Journey on Mar 3, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll try and recap again…let’s see in this year’s draft we have:

1- 1st round pick
3 – 2nd round picks
2 – 3rd round picks
1 – 4th round pick
1 – 5th round pick
2 – 6th round picks
2 – 7th round picks

Plus we have an extra 2nd in 2011. I would bet that we trade a player and a couple of picks for another 1st rounder…two 1st rounders and 2 second rounders would be sweet this year….

Plus we picked up a nice player in Picard and a prototypical prospect in Osala (big, fast, maybe needed another opportunity). Not too bad…

by NotOpie on Mar 3, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Kinda sucks now, because none of those picks will mean anything until 4 or 5 years from now.

yes, I do. Corvo was leaving after this season anyways. Instead of getting nothing for him but hugs goodbye, we now get Osala and next years 2nd. Yes, Corvo being traded now will help us in the future.

This was in Chip's Canes Now post.
Rutherford estimated the Canes would save a little more than $2 million this year with the trades. He said Zach Boychuk and Jay Harrison would be recalled from Albany (AHL).

Did anyone else here Harrison was getting called up? I thought that was just speculation on our part.

No, no, we were going on a run THIS year!

If JR’s being 100% candid about his reasoning for keeping Whitney, I don’t like it, because making the playoff race interesting is unrealistic.

I don’t think that’s the case, though. I think the rumor mill may have grossly overstated Whitney’s market value (especially after he killed the LAK trade), and JR got lowballed. If all he got offered was, say, a second and a sixth or a C-minus prospect, by comparison keeping Whitney around to make the last month of the season watchable for paying customers might be worth his remaining salary from a ticket sales standpoint.

That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

the only reason I ssay that is I know we are a good team and this is not going to happen every year. If we can get a scorer playing on Staals line ( i mean a superstar) we could be a great team. They dont grow on trees. This is an easy way to get one.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

What do we do about defense?

Do not doubt the pimp hand.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 3, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I basically ment I’m excited about the prospect of getting a superstar. as far as defense bring up mcbain he can develope up here for the rest of the year. We have carson up. that leaves pico/pothier and timmy/joni.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

plus we have FA durring the offseason.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

we are a good team??? HELLO!!!! We suck, only playing better recently. yeah injuries, blah blah. You may be the only person who thinks we are a good team.

by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks we have a good team. But if I am so be it.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think the team is decent, and has some good pieces. I don’t think the team is very good though. Without moving Ray it’s going to be difficult to get out of that 11th to 7th place range. It’s going to take a couple more lean years and high draft picks. Even if Whitney stays he’s only got so many productive years left in him. What happens when his production drops off? How will that be replaced?

Do not doubt the pimp hand.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 3, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

here comes the second overall pick (i am excited about that actually)

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Lets hope.

Do not doubt the pimp hand.

I feel so bad for Joni and Tim when I look at that.

he’s talking weird now about all the forwards coming up from Albany. What about the D, Uncle Jimmy? what about the power play with Cullen and Corvo gone?

The only thing that stays the same is the Staal-Jokinen-Whitney line….

Mo has a plan-wear normal ties and hope no one notices him for the next 2 months.

I really don’t know why everyone is hating on mo. We are in midst of a great run, we had an even better/longer one last year. he knows something. This falls on the backs of the players imho

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

just makin fun of him thats all.

Simple answer: Mo is easy to hate on.

i got ya. though I do like the new name (cant remember who gave it to them) MoRon. I basically have said if you hate on mo you should hate on ronny too.

but I guess with a name like Mo ryming with must go, just too easy to pass up.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

I’m hating on Mo because he possibly ruined the career of our 25 year old, Conn Smythe winning, franchise Goalie. But that’s just me…

I almost feel bad for albany. We still their team and there last post season run we take their stars too. lol

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

I just put this above , but appropros here:
Rutherford estimated the Canes would save a little more than $2 million this year with the trades. He said Zach Boychuk and Jay Harrison would be recalled from Albany (AHL).

From Chip A. Since when is Jay Harrison “Exciting Fast and Eager to win”?

gleason
pitkanen
picard
pothier
harrison

carson

Eric Staal...Team Canada first line

by drifterscape on Mar 3, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

about pothier from puckdaddy
Pothier’s been on the brink for a while, never having recovered after a massive rehab from a concussion and become superfluous after the acquisition of Tom Poti(notes).

that doesnt make me feel better

Playoffs!!

We make the playoffs, or get very close! I know that will not make everyone happy, but i’m a man of simple needs. A few growlers of IPA and playoff hockey (with tailgating)!!!

Hey C-Leaguer…If you must boo…please sit in another section…Me and my bro’, Donnie have enough bs all day at work managing people…we are looking for an escape…thanks bud….

Nope, booing Ray tomorrow. Be loud about it and may bring a sign.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 3, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Good luck with the f-ing protest….By the way…the only ones who can hear you are the people who unfortunately sit below you! Certianly not Ray or JR!

give that man some water, he fainted and thinks we got players in return for players today

instead we’re getting Boychuk and Jay Harrison.

I like having Boychuck up. (was tlusty up yesterday? I was kinda drunk) and I would like to see a little mcbain

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Neither where up yesterday. The team has plenty of/too many forwards under contract to get those guys up.

Do not doubt the pimp hand.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 3, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

I knew Zach wasn’t up, but I think i read/heard JR said he was being called up

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

No Tlusty. They scratched Yelle. Everyone’s healthy. (Walker, Cole, LaRose)

Im an idiot (you can quote me on that) If i would have thought about it I would have remembered

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

just imagine when peters starts playing like the young NHL’er he is and sees 40 shots a game!

by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 5:11 PM EST reply actions

you are like a cloud of oppresion man. total buzz kill. :)

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

Now imagine it with Carson and Picard as the second pair and Harrison and Pothier as the third pair.

Do not doubt the pimp hand.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 3, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Im sure mo will go back to a more Trapish sytle to compensate. If we still had Lavi it would be the keep-the-puck-so-they-can’t-score system. We don’t reallly have the personel for that so….. trap it is.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’m kinda excited (no more pics!!!) about seeing these guys get thrown in the deep end. It’ll show us what they are made of.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

it’s jsut a reality check here vs.all the crazy fans who can’t see anything but goodness; really nuts how anyone sees our position as good in anyway. Seasons over. done.
now, I’m going to plenty of games and want to see some good hockey just expect that to be form the visitors

by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 5:16 PM EST reply actions

I know the season is over.

Its been over for a few months now. We didn’t trade anything away that was detrimental to our future. The only one who was under contract was albe (still scratching me head on that one though)

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

reid getting traded was a bit wierd too now that i think of it.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

OO7

Not to get too random on the hate/love fest here. But I think Wallin’s old number should be reserved for Oskar Osala so when he arrives he can be OO 7. The real secret agent. Sorry, it’s been a long day.

Eric Staal...Team Canada first line

by drifterscape on Mar 3, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

next year a different story; they have to put a solid competitive team on the ice. might be the most important offseason ever for the Canes. Tough economy, bad team, small market. JR must execute and balance the youth with NHL’ers ready to contribute.

by tenminmisconduct on Mar 3, 2010 5:21 PM EST reply actions

have you watched the last 10-15 games? wake up!! they’ve been playing good. why all the hate?
