Andrew Alberts Traded to Vancouver for Third Round Pick

The Carolina Hurricanes traded defenseman Andrew Alberts to Vancouver for a third round draft pick.  This looks to be another cost cutting move as the Hurricanes were on the hook for 1.3 million for Alberts next year.

More analysis later.

Alberts Trade

I don’t see the Alberts trade so much as a salary dump as a recognition that the Hurricanes have a number of talented #4, #5, and #6 defensemen. I liked Alberts and felt he brought much needed size to the defense. With all the very young defensemen with the Hurricanes, it didn’t make that much sense to keep Alberts.

by abramsdoug on Mar 3, 2010 3:43 PM EST reply actions

This one doesn't make sense to me.

Very happy with the moves today even if I am sad to see Walker go. But Alberts size and stability seemed like a pretty good deal for 1.3. I would have moved a bunch of guys to dump salary before him.

I agree AD but Chip is the one who said that…and in watching Mo’s interview…he says the canes do have the "younger players ( Rat pack crew ) who will need to come in and help out 7 stap up…and I think while it will take some getting used to seeing others in a Canes Jersey…the Canes still have a rock solid group and Rat players to keep the rest of this eason rather interesting…yes ??

This is a mistake

Some of the other deals make sense ….. this one not so much. Alberts has been steady,
physical and durable. Who are they going to replace him with for $1.3 next year that is better, or even just as good? I just don’t see this as an effort to identify a solid core and build on it.

by JohnSS on Mar 3, 2010 4:05 PM EST reply actions

I think if anything is clear from the moves made today

It is that the Canes had 1 goal: Dump salary.

Sucks, I was hoping they would try to make the team better. Should have seen it coming they were just going to be cheap.

by JussiJuice on Mar 3, 2010 4:06 PM EST reply actions

how exactly were you expecting them to make the team better? No contender is going to trade away an NHL ready player that will have an immediate impact. No team is gonna trade a stud prospect for a rental, and defintely not for any rentals that this team had to offer. With the prospects they already have and the amount of picks within the next 2 years, we could be looking at a power house in teh making, one that can win year in and year out.

I somewhat disagree. The draft picks could turn out to be good or great, but I was expecting at least 1 close to NHL ready prospect. That is the biggest disappointment to me. I don’t feel like we got even one very good to elite prospect in any of the trades. The best thing we got today was a 2nd round pick from Washington (probably at the bottom of the 2nd).

Correct. Caps used their 2010 second rounder for Eric Belanger. We got the 2011 second rounder for Corvo.

Osala

Will be ready in two years, tops.

by RepentTokyo on Mar 3, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Osala; and lines for next season

Do you mean it will take Osala at least two more years or that it will not take any longer than two years?

Let’s think about the forward lines for the start of next season:

Whitney/Staal/Jokinen

Boychuk/Sutter/Ruutu

Samsonov/Tlusty/Cole (assuming Tlusty is centering)

LaRose/Dwyer/Kostopoulos

I assume Brind’Amour is bought out and that the Hurricanes #1 draft choice is Cam Fowler

   Gleason/Pitkanen

  Picard/Carson

  Fowler/Rodney (or McBain)

That Hurricanes team is a strong team — and doesn’t include any UFA signings or Bowman or Dalpe or Osala.

The Hurricanes could benefit from picking up another defenseman.

by abramsdoug on Mar 3, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

or Samson, just saying

Eric Staal...Team Canada first line

by drifterscape on Mar 3, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

Samson

Samson has been very impressive in the River Rats games after he was sent back down. I didn’t include him because it would mean I would be assuming that LaRose, Samsonov, or Cole were traded. I was a little surprised no team made a run for LaRose — as a versatile, experienced, energy wing who can score.

by abramsdoug on Mar 3, 2010 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

That NHL ready prospect would have came from Whitney being moved. Other than Corvo, I dont see how any other players that were dealt warranted that type of return.

by Killswitch on Mar 3, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, the Team is Set to Be Better In the Future

I think the Hurricanes did improve as a team with today’s trades. Here’s my assessment of what we lost (which I posted at the Trade Deadline II thread:

Cullen — great person; very speedy; not in love with the physical game; would be a third line center next season and may be re-signed

Wallin — the team is vastly better on defense without him

Corvo — very talented; had a little of a rough season due to confidence issues; probably will test the UFA market and not re-sign

Walker — great teammate; spent the last two years battling injuries; would not be re-signed;

Yelle — had an horrific start and put on waivers; would not be re-signed; healthy scratch an wouldn’t play on the merits;

Reed — very fast and quick; tons of talent;but very long term project and wouldn’t play above more talented forwards at Albany/Charlotte

Alberts – the most physical defenseman on the team; high upside in terms of physicality; not much offense; a #5#6 defenseman who would battle next year to play due to more talented players from Albany/Charlotte who fit #4-#6 spots; his hitting will be missed

Aaron Ward – would not be re-signed; his flop at the start of the season is over-discussed; the team is improved with his absence

In short, only Corvo is a player who doesn’t have an equally talented person taking his specific spot. I much prefer Sutter as a second line center, even though Cullen is a talented, NHL quality center.

For those players, the Hurricanes obtained a significant number of draft choices and some talented young players. Picard and Osala will help the Hurricanes in the short and the long run.

The Hurricanes have plenty of talent in Albany. What the team needs for next season is a top tier forward with size and speed and a puck moving defenseman who can score and is physical.

The players the Hurricanes traded are not game-changers; and some made the team better by leaving. Merely jettisoning A. Ward, Wallin, and Yelle made the team better. Walker was not a game changer player and the Hurricanes almost certainly extended his playing career by the trade.

Today was a goo day for the Hurricanes. If the Hurricanes had an unlimited budget without restraints other than the salary cap, they might have been able to pick up a player in a major trade — such as Horton. I didn’t see any NHL team have a blockbuster trade that set the NHL ablaze.

by abramsdoug on Mar 3, 2010 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

I pretty much agree with every thing you said. I think too many people are not looking at who we traded away realisticly

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 3, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Stephane Yelle, Harrison Reed traded

man, what a day. For a prospect and a 6th rounder.

by RepentTokyo on Mar 3, 2010 4:20 PM EST reply actions

We must remember, there werent a lot of good players to be had today, you were either making a playoff push or dumping salary. there was no middle ground. We’ve picked up a prospect in Osala, and a minor league goalie. We also acquired another young dman in Picard. The only players to be had today would of been veterans. The good teams were not gonna offer us any solid players because they need them for their own playoff push. The time for us to acquire someone to make us better will be during the free agency period. Granted this team will probably not spend to the cap, but they do have plenty of money to spend now, and im sure they will plug a few holes. With all the moves that came in after the deadline, it softens the blow of not trading Whitney. Now if we end up keeping Whitney for a reasonable deal, I will be overall satisfied with the days results.

Thats a shame, Alberts was always so much fun to watch. Good luck to the big guy.

+1 I was really hoping they would keep Alberts. Hopefully the Rats will make the most of their opportunities now and show they belong in Raleigh.

:-(

And the poor guy lost the little pick-up game they were playing after practice today and was the last one off the ice carrying everyone else’s gear.

I agree. I don’t like this. Not sure I like the Corvo deal either. I was looking at the new depth chart and feel so bad for Tim and Joni.

I think you will see Rodney or McBain called up before Harrison; but I could be mistaken. What is impressive is that there was no loss from the present forward lines of any consequence. Clearly, the Jim Rutherford didn’t love Wallin, Ward, Alberts, or Corvo to the degree that he was anxious to keep them at all costs. Looking at their salaries versus the younger defensemen the Hurricanes had available, that conclusion is rational.

by abramsdoug on Mar 3, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

Harrison has been called up for tomorrow’s game per Canes tweet.

Exactly-enjoyed his play, though he wasnt the greatest. Fun watching him hit (he folded so many people with just an arm shove), worried about how many penalties he took.

by Killswitch on Mar 3, 2010 6:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I’m sorry, but next year’s defense is just plain scary. We currently are going into the season with only 2 guys that have over 1 full year of NHL experience.
