Brind'Amour Won't Make Rash Decision on Future
NHL.com recently interviewed Rod Brind`Amour and he is currently undecided about retirement.
"I'm trying to just get through this year," he said. "I mean, it's been a struggle. I haven't really looked down the line. One thing I know not to do is to make a decision based on the way things have gone this year. So whatever happens, I know I'm going to take some time and see how things work out in the offseason."
Brind'Amour is presently minus -29, which is second to last in the league. He finished with a minus -29 last season as well.

I'll make it for him
Thanks for all the memories but it’s time to hang the skates up. What better way to start going in a younger direction then having the oldest player bow out gracefully.

Hey let's not throw B rindy out here.....
face it, the guy’s a warrior. He’s tough. He wants to contribute.
As I am older than him, I can really understand some of what he’s going through. The mind is there, the spirit is willing but the body just ain’t what it used to be. Those are three things I do know about.
For all the lamenting about how “#17 just ain’t got it anymore”, remember, if I were to ask him and anyone of you to go and do a 5k or a 10k, my money’s on Brindy.
Still, I remember the movie “Everyone’s All-American”. Where a great star of the gridiron went one season too long.
I hope that #17 really takes a long hard look at himself. If he thinks he can contribute and it shows, I hope he goes for the rest of his contract. If he sees that his speed is gone (I blame that on his injury – yeah everyone loses a step but I think his knee injury took more out than he wanted) and that it becomes an issue, I hope that whatever he does afterwards keeps his legacy intact.
If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?
I feel for him, it is not an easy decision to make.
He has had moments where he has looked like the Roddy B he used to be, but unfortunately the moments have been fleeting.
I for one have no problem with him sticking around if he truly thinks he can contribute, in a greatly diminished role from the outset of the season. (Assuming they finally quit putting him on the damn PP.)
The problem is as long as we have a Coach who, for no reason, puts our oldest, slowest, least contributing member this season on our Powerplays and (especially WTF) our 5-on-3 opportunities… He is still going to be out there.
The last few games the Brind’Amour line is getting 3-5 more minutes a night that the Boychuk/Bowman line. Why? Are they trying to make sure he is last in plus/minus this season?
In all honesty, he’s still good enough to be a screener and deflect shots in front tho … and he still has it on faceoffs. If there’s any time he belongs out there, it’s then.

The salary situation next year may also allow the Canes to carry a 3.5 million guy who just wins faceoffs. May also be good for leadership value too.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Doubt it
Its difficult to lead from the bench. We should pay him $3.5 Mil to coach for 5 years but for one year of taking ice time away from our younger players.

I’m sure the coaches are thinking his FO prowess (yes, he’s still 4th best in the NHL @ 59%) coupled with his vision and decision making warrant PP time. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but i don’t think it’s crazy. Personally, I don’t mind him on the 5 on 3; his lack of speed shouldn’t hurt him here.
Look on the bright/dark side, if it’s indeed bringing the PP down, maybe that’ll be enough to get ’em a top 3 pick?
I know how we all feel, we want him to retire. But try to give the guy a break. He’s trying to hold onto a sport he has played his whole life, it’s tough letting that go. I know from my experience, that when I had to hang it up; my life felt like it became completely different. Sports became part of my identity and I didn’t play nearly as long as Roddy. If he wants to come back and play next season, I don’t have a huge problem with that. I think he needs to realize that he might be scratched from games and he needs to not be a distraction in the lockroom.

Sorry :( its just time. We love ya man.

Also next season………….there just is no room in the Inn.
Mo leave the F**kin first line Staal, Jussi, and the Wizard, whats wrong with ya!
Brind'Amour
The reality is that the Hurricanes organization has bent over backwards being kind and gentle to Brind’Amour. For two and a half seasons he has been either injured or the worst player on the ice for either team. The presence of a slow, non-physical fourth line forward who wins 50% of his face-offs is a huge waste of time and does nothing to advance the development of the younger players. The fact that Brind’Amour doesn’t seem to grasp how much of caricature he has become is telling. He was an amazing player. He is no longer a player who should be playing in the NHL; and the sooner the Hurricanes organization works with Brind’Amour to give him an exit strategy that allows him to maintain his legacy the better it will be for all concerned.
Make Brind’Amour the king/czar of finding new STHs and the face-off coach; but get him off the ice while his dignity is still intact and before he becomes even more a distraction to the team.
HIS CALL..........
well, seeing the fact that Chelios is in Atlanta this year, let’s see what happens……. he is the only one that can make the decision either to retire or play on. After he does hang them up, we need to keep him in the organization to teach the new players face-offs and workout regimen to be able to play as long as he did…i will forever remember the look on his face when we won the Cup in 06……….PRICELESS!!
Love the guy, but...
From back-to-back Selke trophies to 29 +/ for two seasons in a row = DONE. Now he’s only tarnishing what was an otherwise stellar career.
Best Faceoff Teams since 1997-98
Funny we are talking about Brindy and his ups and downs. This shows he will always be respected for what he has done, lets not see an article about three seasons of -29
A lot of folks on here seem to think that Rod can’t contribute to this team. While I agree that his one ice performance has been subpar for the last two years, no one on these forums is privy to the locker room and his effect on those dynamics. You can speculate and make your best guesses, but no one here can truly say whether or not he is adding to team we love or not.
Think about it
Would Rod Brind’Amour have played in the NHL last season if his contract would have ended in 2007-2008? He is only playing because of his contract. Rod offers a lot on face-off’s and maybe in the locker room but I’m sure his leadership has been toned down. Asking him if he wants to play another season sounds silly. Of course he wants to play. If he does decide to stick around – we might see his jersey hanging from the rafters but it will have number -29 on it.
