Welcome back, guys! It’s go time.

I still think Harrison deserves to play here in the NHL. Guy seems to be a oretty reliable D-man. Could take Pothier’s spot if/when he leaves after this season.

He’s potentially got a six-week audition period to make that point to JR before the wheeling and dealing begins this summer.

Although, it’s much more likely we’ll see a rotation among Harrison, Carson, Rodney (not sure how waiver rules may affect appearances here), and McBain during that six-week period.

So, he’s got some stiff competition for next season’s roster spots.

by Elsker on Mar 4, 2010 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I think Carson has already assured himself a spot on this team. I would really be surprised to see him get sent down. Kid has really come into his own lately, and deserves to stay. However with a Defense consisting of:

Gleason-Pikanen
Picard-Carson
Pothier-Harrison

I only see one sot there really changing, and that is Pothier (unless he melts the ice with his play). Carson, as I said, is pretty much a lock. So we have Harrison, Rodney, McBain, and potential veteran FA all competing for those final two spots (assuming Picard is truely a part of the future plans here). It will definitely be an interesting offseason…

Yes, Carson’s probably in and waiver rules may affect decisions about moving him up and down anyway.

JR himself has said a couple of times that we’ll be seeing McBain before the end of the year, but they could wait for an injury incident to pull trigger on his debut.

Poither we ride out to the end of the year, because he just came with the deal and is a serviceable D-man. But I doubt he sticks. We’ll see.

by Elsker on Mar 4, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Poither knows this too

I expect to see him doing 1 of 2 things:

Trying like mad to be the best D-Man in this system to stay around.

Go through the motions to not get hurt and heal up for another try around the league next year.

Personally the former makes more sense.

If the guys and gals who brought you the financial meltdown deserve big bonuses, where do I sign up?

Pothier will play hard to try and earn a contract. I just hope that contract isn’t with this team.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 4, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Pothier will be gone, he was thrown into the deal so the salaries worked out in the trade. Hypothetically if Harrison plays well we’ll have to resign him because he is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the deal.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 4, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

You know...

if Harrison can fill in aptly for Alberts, I really don’t think our play should diminish. We could continue this hot streak and maybe actually make a play towards that last playoff spot.

Pothier may not be as good of a offensive defenseman as Corvo, but he’s just as sound defensively IMO. Picard is pretty good at moving the puck around for a defenseman so I think he can pick up that slack. Boychuck is an upgrade over Walker IMO.

So honestly, if we can keep making up for the loss of Cullen, there’s no reason why, despite the firesale, our play should greatly diminish. Now losing Whitney on the other hand would’ve really hurt us.

by pancanbra on Mar 4, 2010 10:59 AM EST reply actions

That seemed to be exactly JR’s attitude, that the team had not been gutted, and that with the return of Cole and LaRose was still a strong team, at least among the forwards.

D-corps was weakened a bit, but with the goalie play we’re getting, may not matter that much. Loss of Corvo/Alberts/Wallin, but gain of two bodies with points to prove and a slot open for a Rat.

by Elsker on Mar 4, 2010 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

Corvo is better than Picard. Corvo and Ward are taking their veteran play and it’s being replaced by young players and the oft injured Pothier. The D took a step back, there no doubt about it. Even if it’s just a youth movement, young d make mistakes and are inconsistent.

How will you feel if Whitney signs with another team in the summer?

by C-Leaguer on Mar 4, 2010 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

That alone should help the draft position, then. :-D

Although, I’m going to be fine with however that sorts itself out. We’ll just deal with draft position when we get there.

It’s re-installing the winning attitude that’s important, and that seems to be on track.

Im not sure if you were implying anything about Corvo, but I don’t think anyone can make an argument the team has a better chance of winning with Joe out of the lineup.

January and February are called the duldrums of the season for a reason. Teams coast. The canes took advantage of that, or better worded were the advantageous beneficiaries. It’s not to say the team hasn’t played well, but they haven’t been getting other teams bests.

Tonight the young defense held Ottawa to 1 goal. The defense has been excellent over the past 12 games. I think we ought to see how the team plays with the new players before determining that Picard is not as good or better than Corvo or that Pothier is not as good as Aaron Ward. The proof will come on the ice. If the defense continues to hold teams to 1 goal, they will have proven their skill.

Here ya go:

Canes Now – Ward could return this season

Canes coach Paul Maurice said today that goaltender Cam Ward would begin skating next week and could return to the lineup at some point this season.

Ward has been sidelined since Feb. 3, when he experienced back pain in the game against the Calgary Flames. He was twice seen a back specialist, but surgery was not required.

“Cam’s getting better. We’re happy with where he’s at,” Maurice said. “This guy’s not playing a game for us this year unless we’re sure he’s 100 percent healthy, but our expectation is that he will play for us this year. We just want to make sure he’s not coming back at 90 or 95 (percent), regardless of what’s going on.”

Maurice said Ward, who watched part of the Canes’ morning skate, would begin skating, then take shots, then at some point rejoin practice.

“I can’t answer how fast that progress will happen,” he said. “But we are expecting him back in our net this season.”

Hurray!

Good for Cam. I’m sure this season was becoming a real minefield of mental challenges and huge disappointments.

So, with Pogge in the club, I’m wondering who’s going to Albany and who’s going to Florida when Cam returns. Anyone heard how Mike Murphy’s health is lately? He’s had some injuries.

(Also – not sure I’ve heard the official pronunciation: is it Pogge like “Pogo” or Pogge like “Pudgy”)

From this source it looks like a hard “g” (which is how JR pronounced it yesterday): POE-gie

But I’ve seen the soft “g” used in more generic pronunciation guides for the name Pogge.

When he was drafted I remember it being like “Pogo” but without the final “O” as LTD mentioned above. I say we wait for Kaiton to butcher so we know how it’s not pronounced.

Canes Now on tonights lines and pairings:
Staal said he doesn’t anticipate a dropoff in the Canes’ play. Zach Boychuk, called up Wednesday from Albany (AHL), will be on the fourth line with Rod Brind’Amour and Tom Kostopoulos. Another callup, defenseman Jay Harrison, will be paired with Brett Carson.

Defenseman Brian Pothier, acquired from the Washington Capitals in the deal that sent Joe Corvo to the Caps, will be paired with Tim Gleason. Joni Pitkanen will work with Alex Picard, the defenseman obtained Feb. 12 from the Ottawa Senators in the Matt Cullen trade.

“We’ve felt good about our lineup the last little while,” Staal said. "Obviously it’s changed a little bit but we’ve added Brian (Pothier), who’s a good defenseman and established and a veteran for a while. Alex played real well last game and fit in nice with our group.

Zach on the 4th line is not good, IMHO. But with Yelles and Walker gone, I dunno? Dwyer, Cole?

Yeah chad had a pretty sweet game the other night. I’m sure the lines will get tossed around durring the game, but I agree that Zach should be on a scorring line.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 4, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

I’d rather it was Dwyer down on the fourth than Boychuk, but not sure who would center the third line. I don’t like Joni with Picard. That doesn’t seem like a great pairing to me. Too much offense, not enough defense.

by C-Leaguer on Mar 4, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah if you keep Dwyer at center then you have to move TKO to fourth line and I’m not sure he deserves to be there either. Doubt they’d move Cole to fourth either. But honestly either may be a better fit there than Zach anyway.

Isn’t boychuk a natural center?

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 4, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

He came up a center, but the Canes have him as an LW in their projections and will play him there.

One possibility is to move Jokinen to centering the third line and then put Cole up on the first, move Rosey to the right side and slot Boychuk on the left of Sutter. Dwyer would then go to the fourth with Brindy and TKO.

How will you feel if Whitney signs with another team in the summer?

by C-Leaguer on Mar 4, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Boychuk is a natural center. The issue, I believe, is whether at his size he can play center in the NHL; and ultimately, I think we see a Boychuk/Sutter/Ruutu line.

by abramsdoug on Mar 4, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

I would like to see that line aswell but that would put eiather Sammy/Cole/Rosie on the fourth line. I don’t know, I’m glad I don’t have to make these calls.

I still cant get over how big our blue line is. I really like that. Other than Timmy/Potheir everyone else is like 6’3 or 6’4 220 and up.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 4, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

That was my first thought aswell. There are only two reasons i can think of 1) pair him with Joni so he can learn from him (both seem to be of the same skill set, just at different stages) or 2) pair him with Joni so he doesnt feel he has to do much on offense and he we can see what he can do from a defensive point of view.

I dont really know eiather.

by CarolinaCanes on Mar 4, 2010 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I’m afraid it’s a little of both and it won’t be good for either.

I agree – I just don’t understand putting Boychuk on the fourth line – makes no sense – if that is what they wanted, they should have re-called Goetzen — Boychuk is a scorer not a defender at this point in his career. Sometimes I really wonder about the coaching on this team.

Fourth Line -- Pretty Amazing Tonight

Boychuk with two assists, TKO with a goal, Brind’Amour a goal and all three +2. Pretty amazing.

gonna need goals tonight

defense is all about communication, trust, and anticipating your partner’s moves. With all the changes I’m sure there are gonna be some giveaways, bad line changes, etc. leading to rushes. with manny being rusty, i’m looking at ottawa putting up 3-4 goals. we’re gonna have to get 2 out of staal and 2-3 somewhere else to hang with this team.

by Capt. Stinky on Mar 4, 2010 1:05 PM EST reply actions

I think you will see a much more defensive game plan tonight. The type of hockey Mo used to be known for. Much more conservative and safe. I’m sure there will be some mistakes, but I dont think you will see the type of game we’ve been playing. More puck posession half court type of game, with slower break outs, less pinching by the D.

This is where MoRon wil prove their worth. Thats my prediciton (or my wishfull thinking one)
