JEROME SAMSON NAMED REEBOK/AHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The American Hockey League announced today that Albany right wing Jerome Samson has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Month for March. Samson scored 10 goals and notched 14 assist for 24 points in 12 games this month.

Samson’s month included three four-point efforts, two three-point nights and his first career hat trick, all while helping Albany close in on a berth in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs. Samson began March by scoring a goal and adding three assists in a 6-1 win over Binghamton on Mar. 2. He became the River Rats’ first 30-goal scorer in nine years during a two-goal outing on Mar. 6 at Norfolk, and his second goal of the game on Mar. 10 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the score with 10.3 seconds left in regulation. Samson had a goal and three assist in a 5-3 win over Worcester on Mar. 17, and led the way with three goals and an assist as Albany beat Adirondack, 5-2, on Mar. 24. Samson closed out the month with three assists in a 5-1 win at Springfield on Mar. 28.

In recognition of his achievement, Samson will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming River Rats home game.

Samson ranks second in the AHL with 37 goals and fourth with 76 points in 72 games for Albany this season. The third-year pro from Greenfield Park, Que., is also the league leader with 327 shots on goal. Samson, 22, shows 80 goals and 89 assist for 169 points in 207 career AHL games, and he has one assist in six NHL games after making his NHL debut with Carolina on Jan. 7, 2010.

JEROME SAMSON NAMED TO 2009-10 AHL FIRST ALL-STAR TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The American Hockey League announced today that Albany right wing Jerome Samson has been named to the 2009-10 AHL First All-Star Team, as voted by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league’s 29 member cities.

Samson has enjoyed a breakout season in 2009-10, pacing Albany’s offense with career highs in goals (37), assists (39) and points (76) through 72 games. He ranks second in the AHL in goals and fourth in points and has recorded four separate four-point performances this season. Well done Samson. I look forward to watching you and the rest of the Rats in the playoffs – and at Camp in September.

I always liked the play of samson and was very puzzled by the move of Aucoin to the bears…as and when he is called up…it never seems quite long enough to get really settled in so that he could possible make a difference for the Caps…but such is the live of & in Pro Hockey huh ??

Is it warm enough for everyone ?? Go Canes

While we’re thinking about Albany, the Times-Union reports that the Rats, #4 goalie (Behind Peters, Murphy and Pogge), Mike Morrison has been re-assigned to ECHL. Meaning Murphy’s hand is good to go back-up. And they say Pogge’s LBI is getting close to healed too. Suddenly too many goalies to carry.

Could we see a few “Black Aces” if the ‘Canes make the postseason? If that was the case then, Peters would most likely join the group here in Raleigh. Man come to think, this is my first post in a lonnnggg time! Hope everyone’s well here at CC! As always.. GO ’CANES!!!

Samson, Dalpe, Osala

The Hurricanes front office has some difficult decisions ahead. On the merits of their play and the quality of their talent, players such as Samson, Dalpe, and Osala deserve a roster spot next season. The first round draft choice, if a forward, will also challenge for a roster spot. If one subtracts the untouchables, that leaves Brind’Amour, Samsonov, LaRose, and Cole as the forwards with their roster spot at risk. All four have a very high salary compared to their goals which is one way to quantify whether a player offers value to the team. High goals scored and low salary = high value. Low goals scored and high salary = job at risk. Add a history of injury or over 30 to the equation and the asset value quotient is low.

Brind’Amour;‘s issue is the easiest to solve. Jim Rutherford needs to buy out Brind’Amour. Samsonov really ought to be traded if that can be done in the off-season. Similarly, I think as between LaRose and Cole, only one can conceivably remain on the team through 2010-2011. Cole probably fills a role that at the moment the Hurricanes don’t have depth — a big, fast, physical forward. On the other hand, Cole’s serious neck injury and lack of soft hands is well-discussed. LaRose’s role in the intangible area is also well-recognized and appreciated; however, in the NHL a team can only keep two to three 5’10" 180 lb players. Boychuk and Whitney are not going anywhere. So the battle is between Dwyer and LaRose. Given LaRose’s salary and his low goal production, and the limitations of his game due to his lack of sophisticated, soft hands, and lack of a nuanced passing game, Dwyer has the higher asset management value or productivity/salary.

Jim Rutherford has also been known to pull rabbits out of the hat, and it at least theoretically possible that Jim Rutherford would bundle LaRose and Cole for Horton. Florida wants out of Horton’s contract and Horton wants out of Florida badly. LaRose and Cole have contracts that expire in 2010-2011; so Florida would get two roster players and would then be able potentially to trade them at the trade deadline. Rutherford would free salary in that trade and would be able to put Horton on the first line with either Jokinen/Staal/Horton or Whitney/Staal/Horton.

With that trade or a similar trade, the Hurricanes can use their first round pick for a talented defenseman. Unless Toronto makes a final push, Edomonton and Boston will take Hall and Seguin; and the next three picks are likely to be defensemen — barring something unusual occurring in the first five picks.

As it relates to next season, the Hurricanes can upgrade their physicality and speed by taking advantage of the talent in Albany; and they can use their draft picks to replenish the talent pool of prospects. My guess is that Samson and Dalpe will take roster spots out of training camp; and that the trade deadline Osala has a roster spot. Also, with the Hurricanes’ history of injuries during the season, some roster spots are also likely to open up for the Rats (soon to be the Checkers).

From the organization’s financial standpoint, having younger, less expensive players, who happen to have more natural talent than the players they replace is a huge bonus. The organization gains time to build its season ticket holder base and can offer the excitement of young, fast, big, physical, talented players to its fan base. That situation is a classic win-win situation.

I believe you are perhaps overly optimistic that our first-rounder would have an immediate roster spot next season. We’re just not that desperate, and I believe we will delay that leap until the next season, at the earliest. I’m equally skeptical that some of the AHL talent is going to make the jump to NHL out of training camp, specifically Samson and maybe not even Dalpe at the beginning of the season.

Finally, I’m personally of the opinion that we will not sign Whitney in the off season. He’ll want too much money and/or too long of a deal, and there will be no “hometown discount”. Plus, I’m just not convinced we even need him. Our left wing slots are full without him.

And, please, no Nathan Horton on this team. We’re better than that.

As always, since we are all projecting into the future, there is absolutely no correct answer. Based on what I’m hearing, I respectfully disagree with you with regard to (1) whether the Hurricanes plan to have their 1st round pick on the roster next season; (2) whether Whitney will re-sign — my take is that he will; (3) whether Dalpe and Samson earn a spot at training camp or at least by the trade deadline; and (4) whether the Hurricanes pick a defenseman as their 1st round pick and then sign a player such as Brunnstrom or trade for a player to go with Staal, such as Horton. It will certainly be interesting to see what does happen.

Samson Getting Attention of the Front Office

Samson has rightly gotten the attention of the Hurricanes organization. Here’s a new article by Paul Branecky. I think Samson’s intensity speaks volumes for his character. I really think he is a player who won’t be denied a roster spot. At 6’ 195 lbs, he has the size to got with his desire to succeed. It’s going to be quite a pre-season camp.

Here’s part of the article:

Samson Making Case for NHL

Jerome Samson may not have the pedigree of some of the Hurricanes’ other prospects, but he’s doing everything he can to make up for that.

The undrafted third-year pro with Albany currently ranks second in the American Hockey League with 37 goals and is tied for fourth place with 78 points through 74 games. He is far and away the River Rats’ top offensive performer, as he boasts 32 more points than the next-highest scorer, rookie Chris Terry.

More Rat news

despite losing to Norfolk last night 2-1 thanks to a loss by Bridgeport & Lowell …the rats are in the PLAYOFFS for sure !! i haven’t read if they will gain home ice advantage yet as i was under the impression that the Rats needed to get a win,and a loss by Lowell…hmmm further “review” is in order huh / but in closing it is great to see that players like Samson are getting the reconigtion they deserve…but i am still pissed at the RATs front office for sending Pistilli back down the day after his getting the AHL Award for all of his humanitiarian efforts…
