Closing Time: Hurricanes at Bruins, Game Day Preview
The Carolina Hurricanes close out their 2009-10 season much sooner than they originally anticipated this afternoon as they tackle the Boston Bruins at TD Garden starting at 1 p.m. While the Canes will be playing for pride as well as to impress their coach for next season, the Bruins could wrap up a playoff spot with a win.
As mentioned previously, Rod Brind`Amour did not make the trip and will sit this last contest out. Jerome Samson was recalled and will play in his spot. The forward lines should be as follows:
- Staal, Jokinen, LaRose
- Sutter, Cole, Whitney
- Dwyer, Boychuk, Bowman
- Samson, Kostopoulos, Samsonov
The coaching staff will most likely mix and match the hodgepodge of defensemen who made the trip. Pothier, McBain, Carson, Rodney, Harrison, and Borer will all be ready. Tim Conboy returned to Albany on Friday and Joni Pitkanen is not expected to play.
Cam Ward will get the start in net.
Eric Staal has 29 goals and needs one more to make it to a nice plateau. Jussi Jokinen leads the team with 30, which is his career best.
Staal is red hot and has nine points, (5 goals), in his last two games.
The Hurricanes rank second in the East with 51 points in their last 40 games. Only Washington earned more in the same time frame, (62).
The Bruins are ahead in the season series with Carolina, 2-1.
FS Carolinas has the telecast. Many of us will be at the Backyard Bistro watching this one, but we will have the Open Game Thread as usual, for those who can not make it. The open thread will be ready at 12:30.

Interesting Lines
I think these lines are close to the lines that will begin 2010-2011 – just add Ruutu to first line perhaps and LaRose to third line and Bowman to fourth.Sent via Iphone
Speaking of Tim Conboy
the poor guy while trying help freeze a puck with Justin peters pushed too hard and pushec it past Petey Dawg and even though Oscar Osala scored a hattie of his own..that self goal cost the rats a loss 4-3 against the baby pens last night…I think Tim as trying too hard…Great article Bob…and i would agree wit AD we fans could be seein what could be the start of 10-11 season…now lets see if the canes can ruin a beautiful day for those testy bruins…Go Canes !!
" Chadness" is contagious ! Go Canes !!
Ruin the B'ruins?
For whom?
The Rags?
The Cryers?
The Scabs?
Do we have any Canes fan that cynical? Wait, I know that answer.
I guess the reason to win is just to win without other considerations. The other bubble teams winning or losing is their own issue.

This season really did borrow from "A Tale of Two Cities",
It was the best of times, the worst of times, although I’d say it was more the latter first then the former last.
Who is going to forget the beginning of the 2009-2010 season? I won’t though I’ll really, really try. It’s like that other phrase, “I won’t forgive it, but perhaps I’ll forget it”. What we saw at the beginning of the year was some of the worst, most abyssal hockey to be played at the RBC Centre by its home team.
Who can forgive the Canes, up 4 to 1 10:00minutes into the 3rd period only to lose 6 to 4 with an empty net goal that sealed it? I can’t forgive that but I want to forget that.
Who can forgive the style of play Mo had, sit back on defense first when the team best defense was actually a strong offensive that was built to keep the other team bottled up in their zone? I’ll try to forgive that too.
Who can forgive the, well let’s call it what is was, the totally selfish play of those who were hurt? Their actions and idea of “gutting through it” when it was so obvious that they had real issues that needed rest and or surgery but instead hurt themselves more and the team as a whole.
Then the tide changed. We were rewarded, for those who still went to the game (I’m talking general nobody specific here), by a great run. Who would have thought back in December that we wouldn’t know if the Canes were getting into the playoffs until April? The new guys coming up, or down geographically, from the Rats would provide such a boost. What about the work of “refuse heap” player Legace coming in and making a statement of, “I’m not dead yet”, and giving the Canes solid goal tending over the past 4 months?
Games that many, including myself, would have left early for in November and December when the Canes were down 2 to 0 or 3 to 1 were now winnable and the Canes did many times live up to their moniker “Cardiac Canes”. It was exciting again. Better, it has given hope to the Canes’ Nation that there is a real chance for the 2010-2011 season.
Yes, there was a lot of “collateral damage” to the players and most likely to the coaching staff this year. Who would have though that so many beloved vets would be thought of by the fans as, “They really got to go”? Or how loyal, but unheralded players would be traded away when they thought their chance to shine for the Canes had finally come? That is the part of hockey, hell any sport, when the players get long in the tooth and while the spirit is there, the body says, “I’m mailing this one in”. The business and the end of careers is the worst thing in any sport or in life for that matter.
Surely, this season really was, “The Worst of times, the Best of Times”.

There will be no crying at the BYB!!!!! And if there is, I’ll have tissues. :)
Oh and you know what will make you feel much better? :D Coming to the airport! Just sayin’.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
What's this that you'll "HAVE" issues nonsense?
You’re a card carrying member of CC.
If you didn’t already have issues, you wouldn’t have fit in so well here.

I can’t decide whether you’re giving me a hard time or not. My brain is a little foggy this morning.
I said I’ll have tissues just in case there’s crying.

Isn’t it that you have to carry tissues because you have issues?

I have an odd mix of emotions running through me today. I made my peace with this season a while back, but I sure do miss these guys when they aren’t playing hockey.
As far as today’s motivation is concerned, I’d tell the team that today is their last opportunity to send a message about how they want to be remembered this season… as a team that never gave up and always played with heart and effort. But most of all I think I’d just tell them to enjoy the day, enjoy each other, have fun on the ice, and come home safely.
GO CANES!

On one of the sites I post on they give away an non-prize prize called “Post of the Week”, PoTW, to honor the best stuff posted on the site.
I nominate this post as the first “PoTW”.
Encore, encore!

Wow, what a difference from the beginning of the year!
Game 1 Defensive Pairings
Corvo-Gleason
Ward-Harrison (because of injury to Pitkanen)
Alberts-Wallin
Game 82 Defensive Pairings
McBain-Carson
Rodney-Pothier
Borer-Harrison
The whole defense would be different if not for Pits injury.

I remember figuring the average age of just the D (with Pitkanen) at the beginning of the year was over 30. Haven’t checked this lineup, but I’m sure it’s close to 25 or 26. Huge difference. HUGE.

With Gleason, Pitkanen, and Picard healthy next season, the defense will begin 2010-2011 vastly improved over the start of 2009-2010.
So you think Picard will be back next season?……ummm not sure about that just yet
Mo leave the F**kin first line Staal, Jussi, and the Wizard, whats wrong with ya!
Picard
That is my guess. I think the Hurricanes organization likes Picard and sees him as a player who can play a physical game, but also has an excellent shot and can skate well. I see Picard as a Seidenberg kind of player, but more physical. We’ll see. I read some commentator in a Canadian newspaper opining that Rodney was unhappy. I haven’t seen that elsewhere or heard that before, so I am very dubious about Rodney having an issue. I can envision Rodney wanting to be given time at Carolina rather than Albany; but nothing in his play indicated any degree at all of discontent. I like Rodney’s play and think if he can gain some more upper body strength during the off-season, he could easily make the team next season.
I really don’t expect to see Rodney in either Charlotte or in Raleigh next season. He’s a Group 6 UFA this summer and I’m not convinced our interest level will be high enough (if any) to compete with other orgs that need to fill out D-corps on the cheap.
Picard is RFA this summer, so will be qualified (by someone). He has value, whether to us or others.
Bundled in a trade would be the highest odds for his fate, in my opinion. Otherwise, see you in camp, Alexandre.
Canes; please let the Bruins win!!!!

Well, the Canes spotted the Bruins 3
and the Bruins were good enough, just, to win.
If the Canes only spotted them 2, well…..
