NHL Draft Drawing Set For Tuesday
After a second-half surge, the Hurricanes finished 24th in the NHL, placing them seventh from the bottom for the NHL Draft. But Tuesday night's NHL Draft Drawing gives Carolina a 4.7 percent chance of moving up four spots to the No. 3 spot in the June 25-26 draft. One ping pong ball will be drawn, with the winner moving up to four spots higher in the draft.
The odds are: Edmonton 25.0%; Boston (from TOR) 18.8%; Florida 14.2%; Columbus 10.7%; NY Islanders 8.1%; Tampa Bay 6.2%; Carolina 4.7%; Atlanta 3.6%; Minnesota 2.7%; NY Rangers 2.1%; Dallas 1.5%; Anaheim 1.1%; Phoenix (from CGY) 0.8%; St. Louis 0.5%.
The lottery will be at 8 p.m. on Versus, TSN and NHL.com.

Question… Canes exit interviews are starting today. I see the potential for running commentary. Can we use this thread or do y’all want to start a different one?

I’ll start something new for the exit interviews since this will probably be draft related chit chat.
GM of CanesCountry.com
Cool! Sounds like Gleason, Cole, Cam, and Ray have already done their exit interviews based on the tweets, so I suspect the videos will be up on CanesVision shortly.

Exit Interviews
It would be great to have running commentary on the exit interviews. Jim Rutherford tends to be direct in his assessments. It is always interesting as well to get a sense of which players really want to stay at Carolina and which players view themselves as purely independent contractors ready to play for the highest bidder.
Contractors
They all view themselves as pure contractors to some extent, I’m sure most like the area, but if more money was offered elsewhere most would leave in a heartbeat.
Contractors, Wanting to Stay, and Ray Whitney
The Tweeter world is ablaze with the statements by Whitney that he fully expected to be traded. The decision not to trade Whitney was part of deliberate plan by Jim Rutherford. Check out the Tweeter comments by Chip Alexander and Luke DeCock. It is strange to me that Chip Alexander and Luke DeCock seemed surprise that Whitney was not the hold up. One only has to listen to Jim Rutherford to understand the dynamics were vastly different than what was being reported.
Another important point not to be lost, is that the Hurricanes organization is built upon principles, including the principle that loyalty counts. No player would refuse an other twice the Hurricanes’ offer; but many would logically choose stability and a franchise that values loyalty over being an NHL vagabond. Look at Seidenberg. He would have been much better off with a two year deal for less than hitchhiking around the NHL.
I think every fan base would like to think that, but I agree that the Canes are known for being a loyal franchise to it’s players, sometimes to it’s detriment. A lot of things have to be considered when a player signs a new contract: amount, length, specific terms, players age, family, etc. Players are a lot less likely to take hometown discounts than most fans think. Seidenburg will probably end up making more money because of the route he’s taken, which is what most Euro’s care about it. He had a good season and he’ll probably get a nice 2-year contract this summer.
It will hurt us again when they re-sign Whitney to an overpaid contract. The Canes are so resistant to change it is almost nauseating. We vastly overpay fan-favorites (Cole and Larose). I get that people here love their fan-favs and any number of STH are going to cancel their seats if (god-forbid) we let Whitney walk or trade away Larose, but something has to give.
We have a great scouting department to find players that will fit into our system (Jokinen, Ruutu, Tlusty are good examples). We need to let them work their magic.
I’m glad you have the Whitney situation all figured out Doug, cause it makes no sense to me. How could Whitney be surprised he wasn’t traded when he has the no-trade clause? Did he tell Rutherford, go ahead and trade me? Please trade me? I’m wondering if they asked any followup questions.
The whole scenario makes no sense to me.
GM of CanesCountry.com
Just what I was about to say… How can you “expect to be traded” when you can Nix any trade that happens (And did in the LA Case).
I still feel after he publicly declined the LA trade, JR just got lowball offers because the best teams knew he wouldn’t accept a trade to anyone but a Pittsburgh type team. Makes a ton of sense to me.
Obviously Whitney gave Rutherford the green light for pure rental. Rutherford kept to his plan.
Sent via Iphone
The LA deal was a rental deal. LA only offered a year when Whitney wanted three.
I think that Whitney saying he fully expected to be traded means he expected to be traded to one of the top contenders. It’s no secret he would have waived his NTC to go to Pitt or Chicago. The fact is though the top teams are all offensive powerhouses with maybe the exception of Vancouver. They weren’t going to pay the price for Whitney.
Personally I think it’s bush league to say you expected to be traded when it’s know you nixed a deal to a team that was the best fit of the potential suitors.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
+1
And in invoking his NTC on the LA deal, he might as well have put a huge neon sign above JR’s head that said “Lowball Me”.
That’s some pretty good leverage for an opposing team, you either get what we are offering or nothing. Obviously there was little wiggle room on Whitney’s end which put JR in a very weak position.
If Whitney gave Rutherford the green light for a pure rental deal then why would Rutherford accept a deal with LA that had a one-year contract attached???
Still huge holes in the story. I believe they had the agreement you state, that is common sense for a 37 year old veteran. I also would bet my house that the deal with LA was for Whitney as a Rental and Whitney declined it simply because he didn’t want to go play in LA the rest of the year.
Maybe so. Would you agree to deed over your house if Jim Rutherford confirms the LA offer was not a rental? ( just kidding about the house deed)
sent via iphone
If what you and I assume is true… That Rutherford and Whitney were on the same page about him solely being a rental… Then why would JR go as far as accepting a trade with LA that included a 1 year extension.
I also tend to believe Bob McKenzie (JR’s good friend) who originally broke the story, saying that a rental deal was good to go until Whitney demanded a 3 year contract, to which LA offered a 1 year, and Whitney turned it down.
Whitney, Rutherford, and the Logic of the Move
It all seems very logical to me and not difficult to decipher. I do wonder if Jim Rutherford would now answer a question by the media whether Whitney ever refused a deal that was a pure rental only. What Whitney has said that he was surprised he was not traded is consistent with all the information I’ve heard, read, and seen. I also just can’t see Jim Rutherford saying anything to any person in the media unless he wanted that statement out in public. I think Jim Rutherford’s character is such that he only says what he means and never goes behind anybody’s back. I saw the one article suggesting Jim Rutherford was frustrated with Whitney; but that is contrary to what I think the situation was and is.
A more profound question, I think, is what is Jim Rutherford’s plan for Whitney. If Rutherford didn’t want to keep Whitney, he could have found a way to get less than a first round pick as a rental. I bet The Rangers wish they had taken Whitney. It’s going to be a long, long off-season for them. Atlanta, too, could have used Whitney. Pittsburgh may well find it should have jumped on the chance to rent Whitney.
Maybe Bob and/or Cory can get some more insight. I am totally convinced Whitney gave Jim Rutherford a green light for a rental and that Whitney was indeed sincerely surprised that he was not traded. I also am totally convinced that Whitney wants to play out his career here; and it iss telling that he wants to end on a high note - and not be a drag on the team. There is all the difference in the world to hanging on a roster spot on a budget team that can’t afford to demote a non-producing player and being a leader on and off the ice. Some players have to have their hockey sticks pried from their hands, one arthritic finger at a time. Others have the personal pride and honor not to let down their team, their coaches, the organization, and the fans.
I hate to keep harping on this, but the LA deal was a rental only. IT WAS RAY WHITNEY HOW TURNED THE LA DEAL IN TO MORE THAN A RENTAL DEAL. That’s what McKenzie reported, that’s what Puck Daddy reported, and it’s consistent with moves made at the deadline. It is not typical, and I would even go so far as to say it is rare, for a team to make a trade for a guy at the deadline and extend him right away. You’re entire line of reasoning falls apart when you admit that Ray Whitney did in fact nix a pure rental deal.
I think Whitney’s surprise is one of two things: 1) True surprise that one of the Cup contenders (Pitt, Wash, Chicago, San Jose, Vancouver, or Buffalo) didn’t want him at the price, or 2) A line he’s feeding the fans so as to not tarnish his image/reputation.
Again, if you have additional information, please share it. I know I would love to hear it. This is an anonymous site, nothing can be traced back.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Hopefully, Bob or Cory or Chip will ask either Whitney or Jim Rutherford. My question is, assuming that there was no rental deal offered, despite press reports to the contrary, how does that affect your position and the position of others who have slammed Whitney?
Why would we assume something that there are press reports to the contrary?
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Press reports were rumors without attribution. Now Whitney says he and his agent expected Whitney to be traded. That is first hand data and not rumors. Why would you assume what Whitney says is untrue?
Rutherford said that Whitney turned down one deal and held all the cards. Why you would assume what Rutherford said was untrue?
As said earlier, perhaps Whitney was surprised because one particular team did not offer anything for him, not because he wasn’t traded to anyone at all? There is a difference.
And perhaps there were no follow up questions because Whitney did not want to talk about it. Branecky used the word “reluctant” in his report today.
There seems to be much more to this than meets the eye. I don’t think it is as cut and dry as anyone would like to believe.
GM of CanesCountry.com
I think what Rutherford says is true. I do think LA offered a deal that Jim Rutherford was willing to accept. Whitney did hold the No Movement clause, so Whitney’s agreement was necessary. Whitney would be a total fool to have an expiring contract, to want to stay at Carolina, and then upset Rutherford in any way. A rental deal and getting to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is hardly something that ranks as a personal disaster. Whitney loves to play hockey. He is incredibly competitive. The idea Whitney didn’t want to help the Hurricanes organization by moving to LA for three months and instead chose to veto a rental deal seems infeasible. That scenario makes zero sense to me and seems to be a premise of the position others have taken. I wish somebody in the media would simply ask Jim Rutherford and Ray Whitney. I don’t know that there is more than meets the eye; but I do think there are complicated dynamics. Whitney seemed genuine in saying he and his agent were surprised no deal was made.
Or, a 100% more logical conclusion, Whitney just didn’t want to go to LA. He wanted to go to Pittsburgh or Washington. Why is that so hard to decifer?
It’s hard to decipher because Whitney is being advised by an agent/attorney. It would be insane for the agent/attorney to tell Whitney that what he needs to do is turn down a rental offer to buy out his contract for a few months and to wait to see if Pittsburgh or Chicago or Washington decide to make a play for him. It would be unthinkably bad advice by the agent/attorney. If Whitney’s agent gave that kind of advice, Whitney ought to think seriously about changing his agent.
I do agree with a lot of your points, I just see so many holes in all the stories and especially what both Whitney and JR have recently said just promotes further confusion. I think the Canes lost a very significant sum in the deal. Ray didn’t sound to cheery in his exit interviews either, I really do hope he stays for a hometown discount but we shall see in the coming months.
This is exactly the point in time that the deal all went horribly wrong for Ray, AD.
I believe that “they” (Ray/agent, but bottom-line, Ray) did make the decision to hold out for a “better offer”.
Canes Now blog has quotes from Ray that express his disbelief that he wasn’t the next guy to go after Kolvachuk was traded.
They thought they were the hot commodity and that he could do far better than LA. So he countered with the no-go lifetime contract…and waited for that better offer…that never came.
And it never came because JR wasn’t going to be low-balled. He has the remaining years of his career to deal with those other 29 orgs, and he can’t be seen…well, you know the rest.
Ray was the one that flew too close to the sun, and fell to earth.
You have entirely too high of an opinion of hockey agents. There is no Scott Boras of the hockey agent world. Many of them are ex-players, and while I love hockey players as people, you generally wouldn’t confuse a hockey player for a nobel prize winner. There’s a reason that only hockey players sign on the first day of free agency while in other sports hardly anyone signs that day.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I don’t think anyone has slammed Whitney. I think we’re open to presenting both sides. JR has said Whitney turned down one deal to a WC team.
by Cory Lavalette on Apr 12, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Cory, do you think Whitney will re-sign? Is your position on the Whitney matter affected if Jim Rutherford were to confirm no rental deal was offered to Whitney?
I don’t think he’ll be back. But I could certainly see him coming back for the right price. I’ll say 75-25.
I believe that JR presented Ray with a chance to go to LA, Whitney asked for an extension and the Kings said no thanks. After that, JR didn’t get any offers he felt were worth doing, so that was the end of it. Maybe there’s some bad feeling on both sides, I don’t know. But I don’t think JR and Ray had any deal ironed out as you’ve mentioned, and Ray said as much yesterday.

That seems ridiculously straight forward. If there hasn’t been some crazy conspiracy involving Whitney’s “super-agent”, the Pens, and other supporting cast members, why has so much been written about it on these pages…….
Who ever said there was a conspiracy? I gave what i believe to be the facts: that Whitney was offered a deal to a WC team (all I added was that it was LA, which seems to be worst-kept secret) and asked for an extension. Then LA walked. The rest is all speculation … that’s why I said “I believe”

oh, I’m on your side, I think people have got overly heated about what rutherford and whitney may or may not have done or planned based on little or no info. whatever happened is done now, so hopefully everyone can move forward and do whats best for themselves and the club, as much as those things coincide.
hey abrams,
weren’t you the one who has been preaching how “the master plan” was that Rutherford wanted to keep Whitney all along and they had both already agreed upon the particulars? Whitney said this morning that they have not even talked about a contract yet. Seems to go against what you have been repeating over and over.
by Art Vandeleigh on Apr 12, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I feel certain Whitney and Rutherford or Whitney’s agent and Rutherford have made is clear that Whitney wants to return and that the Hurricanes want him to re-sign. The question was whether the contract was discussed in the exit interview and it was not. I also feel certain numbers have not yet been discussed. Jim Rutherford seldom if ever renegotiates contracts during a season. Whitney has an agent, so all contractual discussions have to go through the agent and Jim Rutherford.
If Whitney wanted to maximize his cash in as a UFA why in the world wouldn’t he go to L.A. or whichever team wanted him for a playoff run and then go on the open market? Whitney indicated he and his agent believed Whitney would be traded. His statements seem genuine and accurate to me. Everything else I’ve read suggesting to the contrary is without anybody going on record.
Because he was waiting for Pittsburgh or Washington or a Playoffs locked team to come and make an offer.
Why WOULD he want to go to LA when he could drive up his value 100% more by winning an actual Cup with a team like Pittsburgh? That makes perfect sense to me…
Brett Connolly. First 16 year old to score 30 goals in the WHL since Patrick Marleau in 1996 (Playing on one of the worst teams in the league). Height: 6’2", Weight: 180+ lbs, Sniper with an high powered shot and a power-forward mentality.
We will get to see a preview of what exactly he can do at the U-18 Tournament coming in May.
That’s the problem!! If he does well no way he is still on the board when the Canes pick unless they win the draft lottery.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I’m willing to bet he will still be on the board…. Just barely. The Defense around him is too solid not to pick up (especially with injury concerns).
Not that it will matter because we are winning the Draft Lottery =).
I agree. Connolly is likely around at 7th pick. Hall and Sequin then four defensemen, I think.
Sent via Iphone
If Edmonton and Tor/Boston pick #1 and #2 then Hall and Seguin will be gone. Hell, I think Boston might take Connolly with the #2 given the struggles they’ve had on offense.
Florida will take either Seguin or a D. Columbus or the Isles can go either way with Columbus more likely to go D and Islanders more likely to go Wing to have someone play with Tavares and Okoposo (or is it Okposo?). Tampa will go D, unless they trade Vinny for some blue liners and have a forward position open. That then leaves the Canes, who I don’t think will have an opportunity to take Connolly if they stay in seven.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
You are also assuming we actually pick 7th which may not be the case. Boston would never take Connolly and his question marks over Seguin. Connolly will likely require 1 more year in the Juniors while Seguin will not. Boston needs scoring help now.
Florida and Tampa will take a D. Tampa have plenty of offense and needs a franchise D to go with Hedman. Florida NEEDS a player to contribute next year (in fact they just released a whole article on it), Connolly won’t be that guy and they could use a Franchise D to replace the hole Bouwmeester left anyway.
Columbus I think will either take a D or Vladamir Tarasenko. They need to get Nikita Filatov back and one of the best ways could be to draft a the best young Russian available to play with him. Makes sense to me.
The Islanders, like Florida, also NEED a player who can contribute next year. They are trying to get their new arena and they can’t continue to be bottom-5 in the league every year. I think they will take one of the very solid D to eventually replace Mark Streit as their Franchise D.
That’s an interesting thought on Columbus taking Tarasenko to get Filatov back.
I really don’t think it’s too far fetched for Boston to take Connolly at #2. I’ll grant you that he likely needs another year in juniors, it’s hard to only play 19 games and then play in the NHL the next year. That said, Boston is really missing having a scoring wing and they may take Connolly to be that player. They would be smarter to take Seguin, but I can see them taking Connolly, especially if they feel he can contribute next season.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I think it should also be noted that Seguin has played Wing in the past and in a recent article he said he could indeed see himself playing Winger in the NHL.
If Boston really felt that strongly about Connolly over Seguin, I’d guess they would trade up and pick up some extra goodies. I’d love to see that happen, would give someone like us a shot at Seguin, but I don’t think it will…
Assuming we get the 7th pick, maybe we trade away one of our 2nds and move up to the 4th-5th pick. Then trade Boston a player, a 2nd, and our 4th-5th pick for the 2nd Overall. Sounds good to me.
He’s going to really good; elsewhere. Unless we trade-up, we’re most likely picking 5th or 6th, which means dman. I’m not complaining because I think we’re going to get a good dman, but I’m pretty sure Connolly’s going to be gone.
Aren’t the Hurricanes presently set to pick 7th? And don’t they move up only if they win the lottery; but could move to 8th under the worse case scenario?
Connolly will fall to 5th-6th. Here is how it will go in my eyes:
1) Taylor Hall
2) Tyler Seguin
3) Erik Gudbranson
4) Cam Fowler
5) Brian Gormley
6) Brett Connolly
7) Vladamir Tarasenko
Tarasenko may even go before Connolly, he has been extremely good in the KHL this year and has expressed interest in coming to NA. Unlike most Russians, he also speaks very good English.
Plus I think JR could trade up to the 4th-5th spot if he really wanted to. Almost every single Draft in recent history people have moved around in the top-10. We have the assets to do it, it is certainly not out of our reach. And with the Depth in the 2nd Round, our three 2nd Round Picks will hold a ton of value.
The only way we get him is if we trade-up, which I’m fine with because of our plethora of 2nd round picks, that’s what we got them for. I don’t see Tarasenko gettting in the top-7, thank Radulov.
Why do you think that?
Who from the top-5 on my list will be left out for Connolly? It has been pretty much unanimous that Hall and Seguin are the best forwards followed by the 3 best D (Gudbranson, Gormley, Fowler).
I haven’t seen one thing except the CSS rankings (Which aren’t even Overall rankings as I said) that said Connolly would be taken in the top-5.
CSS are typically the most important, it’s the NHL’s Central Scouting Service, every other ranking is discounted, but who’s knows? You really don’t want to wrong about a top 5 pick unless you have a piece of information no one else has, which is rare.
I posted it above, but you have to look at who is drafting ahead of the Canes and what their needs are. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see Boston take Connolly at #2. I think there are too many teams looking for offense drafting ahead of the Canes for Connolly to sneak down to # 7, although I would love it if it happens.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I agree, who doesn’t need a 6’2 phenom forward, which is why we need to swap our first pick and give away a couple of those 2nd rounders we have to get in the top 3, they can have Samsonov and Brindy too if they want.
OK… And who wants to take a chance on a player that has had chronic hip problems for the past 2 years and may be the only player from his group that will likely not play in the NHL next year when they could pick from the very healthy and highly touted D corps this year or Vladamir Tarasenko who is supposedly the best Russian prospect since Ovechkin?
I think chronic is a strong word to use when it comes to Connolly’s hip injury. The injury has happened one time and was the result of an on ice incident. This isn’t even to the level of Cam’s back injury.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Actually his first hip injury happened during the U18 World Championship and it was treated badly by the Canadian U18 trainers.
They told him he was good to go for the beginning of this season until the injury flared up again which prompted him to miss most of the rest of the season. So technically he was injured, “healed”, and then re-injured.
Connolly, Johansen, Niederreiter, Bjugstad, and Sheahan
In all probability other than Hall and Seguin, the next forward picks won’t really be determined until the Prospect Combines when the GMs, scouts, and coaches will all get a chance to take a look at the players and see how they perform. I still think Connolly will be available at the 7th pick because I think the pressure on some teams to bolster their defense and to avoid taking any chances will feed the conservative nature of GMs. Even if Connolly is taken by the Hurricanes pick (assuming they pick 7th), there are some really excellent choices available. Johansen, Niederreiter, Bjugstad, and Sheahan can all make scouts and teams take notice. We could take any of those players and be delighted with what they bring to the team. Tim Gleason is dead on when he says the team needs more grit. These players will all bring their hard hats to work each shift.
I’m all for Connolly. I think his injury is healed by now. The International U18 Tournament is still in between now and the Draft also and Connolly was invited so he can further showcase his skills there. Although I hope he does not put on too good of a show, although as I’ve said elsewhere I fully expect JR to trade up if necessary. He wants a top-4 D or top line forward and we have the assets to get it.
I can easily imagine Jim Rutherford trading up; but I am guessing he will stay put and use the extra picks to take players such as Ivan Telegin and Kirill Kabanov and perhaps even John McFarland. Teams without as many picks have to be very, very careful. The Hurricanes have the luxury of a ending the season playing like a top six team. My prediction is that Jim Rutherford will use the picks to amass even more talent for the system. The defense played well despite major injuries and despite the injuries to Cam Ward by January. We’ll see. It is a very assessment to suggest that Jim Rutherford trades picks to move up. My instinct tells me, he’ll think there is sufficient talent at #7 to be able to take an impact player. This draft is surprisingly deep according to the NHL scouts, various commentators, Jim Rutherford, and Jason Karmanos, among others. As such, and with the issues of players such as Kabanov and Telegin listed in some places as a second round pick, second round picks this year could yield players the quality of Dalpe.
I agree that I don’t see JR trading up, at least not if it costs him his own second round pick. Now I could see moving up from say 7th to 5th if it cost one of the late second round picks, but I don’t see him giving up the early second pick. There are some talented defensemen in that range, and that is where he likes to take them.
I still could see JR trading down if (when!) he wins the draft lottery.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I wouldn’t either… I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten basically any attention. His position has seemingly fallen into the mid to late First round. The kid put up a near PPG pace (40 points in 43 games) as a 17 year old playing in the Finnish Elite League.
For some reference… When Tuomo Ruutu was playing in the exact same league as a 17 year old he only had 22 points in 47 games and was still considered an elite prospect on draft day.
I’d love to trade 2 of our 2nd round picks and a player or something to move up to a mid-late first round pick and nab him. Finnish is always welcome in Carolina and I think it would be nice if he played opening day for us in Finland.
Granlund
Here’s some partial information on Granlund for those partially interested. I don’t see the Hurricanes taking any player 5’9" and 170 lbs. That is a type of player already well-served in the organization. Granlund has amazing skill; but the Hurricanes need to add size as well as speed.

The Lottery
myself, I’d rather wait & see. All the second guessing will give nothing but disappointment & heart burn to me…life is too short for that…right ?
enjoy the rest of the day folks…and be safe out there !!!
" Chadness" is contagious ! Go Canes !!
if the draft position stays how the standings indicate, I think the Islanders pick will determine a lot.
Edmonton – they’ll stick with their original plan and select Hall.
Boston – they might surprise us and select Fowler, but I think they’ll go with the best player available in Seguin.
Florida – they could do anything, but they will probably go D and they have plenty of defensive D-Men, so they’ll select Fowler.
Columbus – they need D help, I think they select Gudbranson.
NYI – who knows what direction they’ll go? I agree they are looking for instance help, so Connolly MIGHT not be the one, they might select Gormley to help out Streit on the PP.
Tampa – they have a 1st line and need defensive help, but I don’t know which D-Man they take.
Carolina – that would leave Connolly as the best player available and someone that could work with Staal after another year in juniors.
But this could all change with the lottery and possible trades.

Rutherford is shooting for the stars this one though. Just my opinion, but he has been dropping comments in his interviews and doing things like publicly going to scout the Windsor/Plymouth series. Teams send out scouts to those games all the time and usually don’t make it known they went. I realize Plymouth is owned by Karmanos and he could very well have just gone to chat with him and watch a good game… But all of his comments about the trip were specifically about the Draft Prospects. We will trade up to get one of the sure bets if the Draft Lottery doesn’t graciously afford us the opportunity itself.
Tampa can always trade their pick. They have top flight first line and Hedman. They could move down and throw an even bigger wild card in to the equation.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
Tampa was exactly the team I figured would be the Wild-card too. I think they will indeed be most willing to trade around as they already have a real good team and new Owner Vinnik is looking to do something to make an impression.
The question for Tampa is do you trade for a player to make a splash, or do you trade for multiple picks to stock the system. I’d go the multiple picks route, but it’s Tampa so no telling.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I think as PackPride17 said below, there are 3 clear elite O (Hall, Seguin, Connolly) and 3 clear elite D (Fowler, Gormley, Gudbranson). I think getting one of those 6 should be top priority, for various reason one of these players may be available at the 7th pick, but I think if need be our latest 2nd Round pick is worth moving up 1 or 2 spots to secure one.

Interestingly, It runs (1) Hall; (2) Seguin, (3) Fowler; (4) Gusbranson; (5) Connolly; (6) Gormley, (7) Niederreiter, (8) Johansen; (9) Burmistrov; and (10) Forbort. It will be fascinating to see when the Russian players are taken. There does seem to be some lingering concerns about the KHL influence.
To be more specific about the Odds...
In the very beginning, we have a 4.7% chance at winning the Draft Lottery outright and getting the 3rd Overall pick
If Edmonton wins the Lottery we have a 6.2% chance at the 3rd Overall pick next draw
If Toronto (Boston) wins the Lottery we have an 8.1% chance at the 3rd Overall pick next draw
If Florida wins the Lottery we have a 10.7% chance at the 4th Overall pick next draw
If Columbus wins the Lottery we have a 14.2% chance at the 5th Overall pick next draw
If NY Islanders win the Lottery we have an 18.8% chance at the 6th Overall pick next draw
If Tampa wins the Lottery we have a 48.2% chance at the 7th Overall pick next draw
Here’s a Draft Simulator… I got the Canes in a few tries surprisingly
If anybody but Carolina, Edmonton, or Boston win the lottery; it could hurt our team. I think that Boston, Florida, and NYI are wild cards here. They could go in either direction; offense or defense. I think there are 3 elite level offensive players and 3 elite defensive players. I believe we have a chance at getting one of those players even though we are in the 7th slot. If the lottery takes a wierd turn, that could end up hurting us.

As much as I would love to be in a position to pick, Hall, Seguin, or Connolly, I think Connolly is the only top three CSS forward where the Hurricanes have a shot. I don’t think it would be bad in the least, however, to be able to choose from Johansen, Bjugstad, Sheahan, Neiderreiter. Any of those players will make this disastrous season much less painful. Gleason’s exit interview ought to be the bumper sticker for 2010-2011: “We need more Grit”
I feel the same way about the 3 elite O and 3 elite D. I definitely think Tampa, Columbus, and the Islanders are the big Wild Cards.
Tampa: They have a high powered offense and a very pretty solid D headed by Victor Hedman (2nd Overall last year). Solid goaltending also has been a problem (Mike Smith’s injuries). I really think they may go for a D they personally like to compliment Hedman at their possible 6th pick. Or they may even go for broke with the best goalie in Calvin Pickard or Jack Cambell.
Columbus: They fired their coach after a pretty bad season. Their coach and arguably their best Winger prospect Nikita Filatov had a well publicized fued which resulted in Filatov going back to Russia. They want to get him back and I’ve seen multiple places a good way to do that might be to draft the highly talented Russian winger Vladamir Tarasenko.
I think Tarasenko may be a dark horse for all teams ahead of us, a lot of scouts and TSN analysts had him going top-5. There is always the Russian factor but fortunately for us he has been pretty clear he wants to come to the NHL and speaks very good English. I could easily see a team taking a chance on him over a player like Connolly who has been injured all year (such as the Islanders who want an elite Winger).
