According to Luke DeCock of the N&O, in a story posted at CanesNow this afternoon, veteran center and long-time and now former Captain of the Carolina Hurricanes, Rod Brind`Amour has been selected by the local chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as Carolina's nominee for the NHL Masterton Trophy.
This is the third time Brind`Amour has been nominated for the Masterton, though he has yet to be selected as the NHL's recipient. He received the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward in both 2005-06 and 2006-07.
As described at NHL.com, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Last year, the Masterton was awarded to Steve Sullivan of the Nashville Predators. Jason Blake received the award in 2008. The 2010 NHL Award ceremony will be in Las Vegas in June.
Congratulations to Brind`Amour on this recognition for his dedication and perseverance.

I can see why he is the teams nominee… but I don’t believe the NHL is going to give him the award… not enough attention given to Carolina… and the -29 (or whatever) probably hurts him….
May we please Trade Staal???

Say what you will about his on-ice play or whatever, but I have never once doubted his “perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.”
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
Don’t get me wrong… he deserves the nomination… and may even deserve to win the award…. But the only place on earth where people even begin to understand what Rod Brind’Amour has been through are right here in Raleigh…
This market just does not get the attention on a national scale that it needs for a player like Rod Brind’Amour to win the Masterton trophy… That is a sad fact… but it’s unfortunately true.
Now… if he had 20-25 goals, 50-70 points, and was +15 (and the Hurricanes were in a playoff spot) then he may have more of a chance…. that is also an unfortunate fact :-(
May we please Trade Staal???

I don’t agree. The market has nothing to do with it. He deserves the nomination, imo, but he’s not the most deserving in the whole league. My vote goes to Theodore.

I dunno the whole award has become about who was the most injured/sick to come back and play. Probably go to Bergeron.
Well, Theodore’s child died in the offseason. That’s why I’d pick him. The fact that he’s playing so well while fending off his obvious replacement … gotta admit I’m super-impressed with his season.

I never said he didn’t deserve the nomination… clearly he does!!!
But playing in a smaller market will surely keep him from winning the award…. because he doesn’t get the media attention he would get in NY, DC, Boston, LA, Toronto, Etc….
He could have had his left leg amputated and never missed a game…. but if it’s not reported than who would know?
May we please Trade Staal???

It may not be in the media, but the fans know about Brindy. I talk to people all over the country through my job. Once they get over the shock of a ‘girl from the south that likes hockey???’ they usually say “Brind’amour plays for Carolina doesn’t he. I’ve always liked him”.
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
But the fans don’t vote for the winner…… I think that was my point….
May we please Trade Staal???

Amen
my grandson in spokane saw the announcement and said if Rod got it, would it be considered a mercy gift type of thing?? I told him no way…as and while he may be having more than his fair share of troubles…the man doesn’t ever quit…and that at least in spirit overly qualifies the man for the nomination…but between us here i too would like to see him get it…but sadly i won’t hold my breath… but again I’d love to see the man get it…that would be a positive thing for this season for him…
" Chadness" is contagious ! Go Canes !!
Actually Steve Sullivan won last year. Blake won in 2007-2008.

Thanks – I got it from NHL.com and didn’t realize they weren’t updated for the most recent winners. (kind of unusual for them)
