Fans Want To Know: Tom Kostopoulos

Carolina Hurricanes winger Tom Kostopoulos posing for LTD.

For those of you who may have missed this the last time around, here is a chance for you to submit a question which could be asked to a Hurricanes player.  For what most likely will be our final "Fans Want To Know" feature of the season,  we are going to try to catch up with Hurricanes winger, Tom Kostopoulos.

Kostopoulos was originally drafted by the Penguins but has also played for the Kings and Canadiens before signing a three year deal as a free agent this past summer with Carolina.  His 8 goals for the season are just one shy of his career best and his 106 penalty minutes are just seven shy of his career high of 113.

He does have a career high (plus) +4 so far this season.

Kostopoulos never hesitates to stick up for his teammates and has a team high 10 fighting majors.  He is also well known for his practical jokes.

This is your chance to ask him a question, what will it be?

Wonder what his personal goals are for next season (aside from helping the Canes make and succeed in the playoffs).

What has he learned spending so much time on the ice from Rod Brind`Amour? (I need RF’s glaring hamster clip here)

I thought that was the tip of Hoppity’s ear in the pic.

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

What were his thoughts as a newcomer on the team during that difficult 14-game winless streak? Who (teammate, former teammate, coach) did he look to for direction on how to respond?

add on ~ What was the pulse of the team during the winless streak… Finger pointing, shoulder shrugging, putting heads together and try and figure things out…who seemed to be the most vocal… I know they were hateing it, but what was the deeper feelings during " the streak"…

If Nino is at #12, and compared to Erik Cole, I want to know if that’s the Cole prior to 2006 or after?

Questionnn

Just a question hoping to get answered about the draft:

Say we finish 5th in the draft. Is their a possibility of JR moving us up further to get say, Hall, (to compliment Staal) with the number 2 pick (consdering edm picks Seguin)?? Has it been done? Compared to history, do you think boston would move up to say 5th. : Possiblity- Whitney, a 2nd rounder, our 5th position?? Always wondered this.

Thanks

by RU4RU on Apr 7, 2010 1:50 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Not sure you meant to leave this question within this thread, but the answer is that trades for draft position do indeed happen.

JR traded up in front of the home fans when we hosted the 2004 draft from 8th to 4th, using a second-round pick added to our first rounder to do so, in a trade with Columbus in order to pick-up Andrew Ladd (now in the form of Tuumo Ruutu in a 2008 trade with Chicago).

Florida and Pittsburgh swapped places in the 2006 draft to allow Pittsburgh to select Fleury #1, while Florida thankfully settled for Horton at #3, leaving Staal on the table for our #2 pick.

Yes, it happens. A player(s) and a pick(s) might pry a prime draft slot out of some team this year, if desired.

Lots of time to wheel and deal between when the order is known (next week) and the July draft.

…Florida and Pittsburgh swapped places in the 2006 draft…

Sheesh! 2003 draft, of course, not the 2006 draft.

And the trade that fueled this swap was this exchange:

The Florida Panthers trade the first pick (Marc-Andre Fleury) and 73rd pick (Daniel Carcillo) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the third pick (Nathan Horton), the 55th pick (Stefan Meyer) and Mikael Samuelsson.

I would like to know if he has any off season vacation plans…. or if he is going to stay around and join the “Rod-Brind’Amour-daily-workout-because-vacations-are-for-wimps” plan back here in Raleigh.

He’s the only player to have played all 80 games for the Hurricanes this year. Has he normally been injury-free in his career and what are his thoughts as to why?

We’re playing Montreal tomorrow night – where he played for the two years prior to coming to Carolina. Any special motivation or insight for Thursday night’s game?

My Question to Tom is:

All of us do get old and one day we all have to quit…with that in mind…if you couldn’t keep up with the rigors of Pro hockey…what would you do? Would it be hockey related ?

Tip-ins

I’ve seen him at practice, standing near the crease, practicing tip-ins/deflections while someone takes shots from the point. How the heck does one actually do that? I mean – how impossible is it to deflect with accuracy a puck coming at you at 90mph? What is the secret? (and is it scary?)
