Hurricanes To Host 2011 NHL All-Star Game

The Hurricanes and the NHL, led by Commissioner Gary Bettman, have announced that Raleigh will host the 2011 NHL All-Star Game next season. Bob is at the press conference and will have more later. For now, here's the release from the team:

CAROLINA HURRICANES TO HOST 2011 NHL ALL-STAR GAME

NHL’s showcase of talent and skill to take place at the RBC Center, Jan. 29-30

RALEIGH, NC—The National Hockey League and the Carolina Hurricanes today announced that the Hurricanes and the city of Raleigh will host the 2011 NHL All-Star Celebration. The 58th NHL All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Jan. 30, at the RBC Center, and the Honda NHL SuperSkills competition will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29.

"We are extremely pleased that the NHL has selected the Hurricanes to host the All-Star Game," said Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. "This will be a very exciting event for Caniacs to take part in, and I know the Triangle area will be a great host for the NHL and its star players."

The 2011 All-Star Game will mark the fourth time that the Hurricanes have hosted a major NHL event, as the team hosted the Stanley Cup Final in 2002 and 2006, as well as the NHL Entry Draft in 2004. It marks just the second major-league All-Star Game to take place in North Carolina, as Charlotte hosted the 1991 NBA All-Star Game.

"The fact that this event has been awarded to the Hurricanes is a testimony to the strength of the market, the strength of the franchise and, above all, the enthusiastic support the ‘Caniacs’ show for their team," said Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner. "The Hurricanes will provide the perfect showcase as the eyes of the hockey world focus on the Triangle, its fantastic arena and its truly outstanding hockey fans."

The 2011 NHL All-Star Game will feature various hockey-themed events, entertainment and activities. Further details on the 2011 NHL All-Star Celebration, including ticket and broadcast details, will be released at a later date.

Current members of the Hurricanes that have participated in past All-Star Games include Associate Head Coach/Director of Player Personnel Ron Francis (1983, 1985, 1990, 1996), Assistant Coach Tom Barrasso (1985), Captain Eric Staal (2007, 2008, 2009), Alternate Captain Rod Brind’Amour (1992) and Alternate Captain Ray Whitney (2000, 2003). Eric Staal was named the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player in 2008 in Atlanta.

((UPDATE from Bob))

I will have thoughts and quotes in a bit, after I have a chance type it all up.

In case you missed it, I recorded the Gary Bettman portion of the announcement.  This could be the most the commissioner has ever been cheered for at a public event.  Check it out after the jump.  (no guarantees about the quality)

STHs to Get Tickets

Sths are going to be able to buy tickets, one for one with respect to how many season tickets they have — at least according to what two different account representatives told me. Apparently, more information is in the mail to STHs.

Yes, they were handing out info sheets at the cookout. Luckily, full season AND 26-game STH get first priority.

We got the ticket renewal in the mail today.

Aww Shucks !!

I didn’t get to go and grab that short& big eared sockmonkey…as i was going to hang him upside down if he hadn’t awarded the canes the ASG !! And John Forslund is taller than i thought he was…All kidding aside…this is great news all the way around…Congrates to you folks there in the triangle area !!

I noticed they had some burly type security guards around Mr. Bettman. He did mention as an additional reason for the Hurricanes hosting the All Star Game that Esteban1949/CaniacSteve carried great weight in his eyes. Maybe that last comment I only thought I heard; but if he didn’t say it, he meant to. It surely was in his outline.

Aaaaaaand this is the place...

…where I wonder aloud if anyone is interested in me contributing to their 26-game or full-season pack, very few of which tickets I would actually use (living in Virginia and all), in return for the rights to the ASG ticket purchase corresponding with my seat.

That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

Yeah I was trying to figure out the logistics of that particular time share too.

by caniacgirl on Apr 8, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The logistics are...

…if someone that ordinarily buys two+ tickets doesn’t plan to use the ASG ticket purchase rights for one of their seats, talk to me and I’ll contribute up front at least five or six games-worth in return for that right.

I’ve got two or three weekends that I’d want my one ticket for if there’s a game or games scheduled, but other than that, I’d stay out of the way.

Question to Bob and Cory

  Bob and Cory,\

What JoshCVT is suggesting makes tons of sense. There are bound to be some folks here a CC who really want to the go to the All Star Game and with some coordination could figure out a way to contribute towards an STH. I am not certain of the logistics; but CC was very helpful as a site for people to work through the angst of the trip to Finland.

Very excited at the unexepcted (to me anyway) news that as a 26-plan holder I have some ticket priority.

It’s not as weird as you may have been led to believe. Even if you just use it a little like a twitter feed to consolidate all the things you’re interested in.

Plus, I found that seeing what your high school homecoming queen looks like 25 years later is pretty fun.

I think when you’re Gary Bettman, self deprecation comes rather easily to you. Especially when you’re addressing hockey fans.

Here’s the story from NHL.com. They built it around how awesome the fans (using the word: Caniacs) are and that Raleigh will shine on the international stage.

Bob caught this for us in the video – and now for everyone to read.

Memories of Game 7 at RBC Center were especially vivid — and noisy. “It was the first professional sporting event that I’d ever been to where everyone stood for the entire game and that’s a testament to the fans here who have learned to love the game,” Bettman said.

Building the Season Ticket Holder Base and Peter Karmanos' Comments

I was glad to hear Peter Karmanos comments about building the season ticket holder base because I think he carries gravitas; and leadership does come from the top. It would help the organization, the players, the coaches, and the fans to put this issue as a top priority. It would be a travesty to lose players like Sutter, Boychuk, Dalpe, Bowman, McBain, Carson, Tlusty, Terry, Samson, and Osala because we didn’t have the resources to pay them three years from now. I really don’t want to experience the agony of having the Hurricanes become a farm team for the cap teams.

by abramsdoug on Apr 8, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That was tons of fun!

I was right behind the media, to the left facing the stage, kind of where Staaly was sitting. I will post real pictures later, hopefully after tonight’s game (the ones I attempted to tweet were from my Blackberry and I couldn’t even see them outside so they weren’t very good).

The enormity of having this event in Raleigh is just starting to sink in with me.

Can’t wait to see fan shots – over 2000 is what ADog said were lined up for autographs. Was the crowd that huge? Way to show up for the franchise, everyone.

The players signed for a full hour, and it was non-stop. I got some shots of the crowds in the autograph line, but then had a special “project” to attend to right after the autograph session and had to rush to get to my spot in time for the press conference, so I never got a shot of the full crowd for the presser but there were several thousand fans there in my estimation.

2,000 was my best guess. People were lined up into the parking lot and were there steadily until Ruutu and Gleason were escorted away so people would listen to Forslund and Bettman. Ruutu was signing autographs as he walked away.

Yup, according to All Star Central (which didn’t take very long to get up and running). You can also sign up on the wait list.

I was told all tickets to ASG events were first being offered to STHs. I think the quote below has a priority that will apply to all ASG events that are ticketed.

Q: What is Season Ticket Holder “account priority”?
A Season Ticket Holder’s account priority is based on their ticket plan type and account creation date. Full Season Ticket Holders have top priority, followed by 26-Game Plan Holders, then 12-Game Plan Holders. Within each ticket plan grouping, priority is determined by account creation date. Some type of ticket plan must be maintained on an account continually in order to preserve that account’s original creation date, and therefore, its original account priority.

Season Ticket Holder “account priority” is used throughout the season for such reasons as the Select-A-Seat event for Full Season Ticket and 26-Game Plan Holders, and for processing 12-Game Plan seat assignments. Opening Night Ticket request forms and playoff seat assignments for 12-Game Plan Holders, additional seats, and relocations are also based on account priority.

by abramsdoug on Apr 8, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

From the Canes site:

1. The only way to confidently secure tickets to All-Star Weekend is by purchasing a season ticket package for the 2010-11 season.

Full Season Ticket and 26-Game Plan Holders who purchase their ticket plans by May 14 will be guaranteed the opportunity to purchase tickets to the NHL All-Star Game and the NHL Skills Competition (equivalent to their number of plan seats).

12-Game Plan Holders who purchase their ticket plans by May 14 will receive priority to purchase tickets (equivalent to their number of plan seats) to one of these events based on availability and account priority.

Frequently asked questions for season ticket holders can be found here. For more information or to purchase a package, please call 1-866 NHL CANEs (1-866-645-2263).

2. The NHL All-Star Game has sold out annually with priority given to the league’s corporate sponsors, and the host city’s team’s corporate sponsors, suite holders and season ticket holders. As such, it is unlikely that any individual tickets will go on sale to the general public. The best way to gain priority to purchase All-Star Weekend tickets is through the purchase of a season ticket package for the 2010-11 season. A waitlist will be compiled, however, in the event that individual game tickets become available for sale. To join the waitlist for single game tickets, click here.

How difficult is it for us not STH people to get All Star tickets?

I go to school at ASU so coming to a game is an all day deal for me, so season tickets are kinda out of the picture for me…the 12 game plan MIGHT be a possibility. Am I able to choose any 12 games?

by AG74683 on Apr 8, 2010 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

You can’t choose any 12 games that you want. However, I go to school 5 hours away so the weekends and breaks are my only opportunities to go to the games. I was able to buy the weekend plan and it’s worked out really well. I traded in the tickets that were on weekdays for games that I could make it to (a lot of middle of the week games during my winter break). It’s definitely do-able.

I can't stand those damn "hockey purists" up north and in the NE

From CBC Hockey News:

Yeah, all of US southern hackey fans weren’ta interested in a goin’ to all them fancy shindigs at that thar RBC palace where all of them funny talkin’ northeners (a boot? why are they all a talkin’ about work shoes?) were a gabbin’ away about some big party.

Heck, with all of the celebraten about them boys over there on tobacky rode at Duke a winnen that thar big basketball meet up in one of then thar nothern states, we waz all a partied out. Ma even had to go to her secret sower mash kettle to get the youngens some of that thar white litening for them to be a celebraden two. I got to a tell you I was a mad at my 15 year old daughter. She waz a swarin like some navy guy in front of her 2 year old. It a broek my heart.

Hey, all of you “hockey purists” from “up north” in “real hockey country”, hang it out your ear. Many of us were working. Oh yes, over 18,000 showed up for the game last night, even though the Canes are out of the playoff race.

Oh yes, GO YOTES!

Some Points Raised by the Article

The article does raise valid points about the fact that attendance at the RBC was lower than ideal this season. On the other hand, as the Montreal game showed, the Caniacs supported the team even during the doldrums. I also have no problem with the article discussing the next for the Hurricanes organization to increase significantly the number of season ticket holders — say 4,999 more season ticket holders (we added one more seat for next year, so as to avoid me being that guy who complains all the time but does nothing to help).

   Here’s part of the article:

Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. expects it to provide a jolt to the franchise’s season-ticket numbers.

Carolina plays Montreal on Thursday night in its home finale. Through 40 home games, the Hurricanes are averaging 15,154 fans — on pace for their worst regular-season average since the lockout — during a disappointing, injury-riddled season in which the Hurricanes spent a few weeks as the NHL’s worst team and have been eliminated from the playoff race.
