Trading players for a first round pick, wich one?
fan game
Many GM in the league will be interesting making a trade for having one key players in is team. Of course, many factors count when it time to trade like the contract, the age of the players, the rank position, etc. If JR have the possibility to make a trade for a 1# round pick, wich players could be interresting a team, why and for what?
The St-Louis Blues and The Philadelphia Flyers will searching for a #1 goaltender for next year. I think, some guy like Carey Price in MTL will be on the market and the Habs could be intersting to make a move like Price for a good young players and the St-Louis 1# round pick. This is the kind of possibility.
So if you're JR, wich player (s) in your team could be a good package trade for having a 1 round pick. Of course be honnest and think both side GM.
If you make a trade one to one, i think Sutter and Pitkanen will be the only players in the team. For the other, JR will ask more then a first round pick (Staal, Ward), and for the rest, the other GM will ask more then only the players. Also, depend wich place on the draft you want? Washington will draft #26, San Jose will draft #27-30 so, maybe, at this position, we have possibility to trade only a player for this kind of rank...
Have fun!
What do you thin about this?

Sorry randycane
I’m sorry for my grammar Randy. English is only my second language after french and i’m not leaving in english area, i’m from Quebec, Canada and i don’t have a lot of possibility to practice my grammar.
But i’m still a whalers, canes fans!
don’t let the grammar police get u down, nick. Hockey is a universal language and we appreciate your voice on this board.
No problem about Grammar; we got the point, no worries
I doubt the Hurricanes would be willing to part with any of the veterans who would yield a first round draft pick in return. I think Sutter and Pitkanen are far too valuable to the team to trade them.

I’m sorry, i was rude. My French is worse than your English, trust me!! WELCOME
I’m guessing we will trade down to a late 1st Round pick using two of our 2nd Round Picks. I’d also guess JR will be actively trying to trade Cole, Samsonov, and Picard on Draft day but these guys likely have negative value instead of positive (except Picard who is an RFA but still has little value).
I agree that Sutter, Pitkanen, Staal, and Cam are likely the only players we have that would fetch a high 1st Rounder. Sutter is the only one I would consider moving and that is probably only for a top-5 pick (highly unlikely).
Washington's Draft Pick
I thought Washington had the 22nd pick, am I incorrect? My thought was since they lost in the 1st round and had the best record of all 1st round exits; they had the 22nd pick.

I believe the rules are that Draft picks are based off of the regular season placement EXCEPT for the 4 teams that reach the Conference Finals (who are given the last 4 Overall picks). Therefore Washington is locked into the 26th Overall Pick now.
You are correct JJ, my bad.

Invicible cane, on a other chat room tell us this:
“the way the draft order works is apparently not nearly as straight-forward as you are thinking. (Which reflects how I thought it worked, too, until I ran across this article that shows the details are a bit more complicated: ”http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=425557" target="_blank">http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=425557 )
So, from that, the picks are set up like this:
30 – Stanley Cup Winner
29 – Stanley Cup Runner-Up
28 – Conference finalist with higher regular season standing
27 – Conference finalist with lower regular season standing
So far, so good. But then it gets a bit tricky.
In the 15 – 26 spots go to all the teams that lost in the first two rounds of the playoffs. There is no difference between getting knocked out in the first round or in the second round.
Instead, those teams are divided into two groups – regular season division leaders, and “wildcard” playoff teams. Then the teams within each of those groups are sorted by regular season standings.
The division leaders will take the later picks, with the team highest in the regular season standings getting the latest pick, the team next in the standings getting the next pick, and so on, for all division leaders who lost in the first two rounds.
Then the picks will go to the wildcard teams, again taking into account their regular season standings.
And finally, the first 14 spots will go to the non-playoff teams, in order of regular season standings.
Given all that, the only spot determined at this point, beyond the first 14, is Washington at 26. (Highest regular season rank of all division leaders, and out in round 1.)
Should the Penguins beat the Canadiens, the Sharks beat the Red Wings, the Bruins beat the Flyers, and the Blackhawks beat the Canucks, then (not taking traded picks into account) the 15 – 26 spots will play out as:
15. Canadiens
16. Flyers
17. Senators
18. Avalanche
19. Predators
20. Kings
21. Red Wings
22. Coyotes
23. Sabres*
24. Devils*
25. Canucks*
26. Capitals*
(* – division leaders)
But of course, that’s just speculation right now. "
Also with this link you will see the confirm rank for some team..

The consensus seems to be that picks 5-15 are of similar value, so if the Canes decide to move down, they might be able to pick up value while drafting a player that will fill a role in a year or two. I think we’d all agree that moving up into the top 4 or 5 would be expensive not only for the assets lost but also the contract of the new player.
7 seems to be a sweet spot for the Canes. They can get a player that might turn into a Sutter or a Dalpe in the next year or two, or if crazy things happen a Gormley might fall into their lap. They have 3 (4?) picks in round 2 which offers the opportunity to move into the 25-35 range and add depth to the organization. Personally, I think JR’s done a great job of stockpiling picks and, assuming they draft well, he can restock the minors with players that will help the team 2,3, or 4 years down the road.
A good position to be in. We paid for it with the disappointment of 09-10.
Pick #7
I think at least a few of the potential #7 picks could well make the team out of training camp:
1. Gudbranson;
2. Connolly;
3. Niederreiter;
4. Johansen (not as clear as other, but likely);
5. Gormley
With all the talent, it makes sense for Rutherford to pick some players in the second round with high upside, but who need time; also they may well get a shot at Kabanov, Telegin, and McFarland. The second round players will be players with great potential but who either need more time or have some issues that have kept them off the first round.
