Puck Readers: Book Selection Poll UPDATED
And the Winner is:
The Game by Ken Dryden
Here's the link at Amazon. though if you can find a local bookseller or library that carries it, I always recommend that.
Looking at the Calendar, I'll plan to put up the fan post to discuss in 3 weeks, on June 21st. And if you're running late, you can drop by there at your convenience. I'll keep an eye on the comments and if it's getting buried I'll change the date to move it up to the top of the order. No pressure - it's summertime!
If there seems to be continued interest, I'll put up a new poll with the books that got votes below, plus a couple new titles that have been brought up. I'll aim for the same week.
Excellent choice. This should be fun.

Original post from May 26th:
A few days ago I asked the question: Who wants to join me in reading some good hockey books together this summer? A few of you actually didn't think that was way too weird (that's why I love this site!) and made some suggestions. So here are the titles I found mentioned in the comments. Just vote your choice and we'll start with the one that gets the most votes. If you want to make a case for your favorite, beyond what you wrote in the first fanpost, please do.
Caniac Kid - you had so many titles that sounded good - thank you! The poll was getting long - so I tried to pick out the ones you seemed to like the best. If I missed one, please make a note in the comments and we'll put it in the next group to select.
If a book doesn't get any votes I won't bring it up again. All books with votes will go on the next poll - if we decide this works. There were only 10 who seemed to want to pursue this - a great number. I'm not expecting a lot of votes here.
Voting will close Friday at 9pm - so people will know the choice and want to try to pick something up for the long weekend. Maybe allow 3-4 weeks (prior to the draft) to get through it - and then open another fan post as the forum. What's nice is that we don't really need to have a set time for the discussion because of how well the dialog works here at SBN.
I'm also very open to a BYB "live" group as well - but we can discuss that later. Great idea.
Other thoughts? I'm open and will be happy to modify any of the above to maximize everyone's enjoyment and participation.

This just in from Finland:

@HMof2 your poll is missing Searching for Bobby Orr. Greatest biography of any hockey player. Btw: The Game is THE hockey book. Must read.

I was looking on Amazon to see if most of the titles were available for the Kindle when I ran acros this book: "Between the Lines: Not-So-Tall Tales From Ray “Scampy” Scapinello’s Four Decades in the NHL."
Looks like it might be a pretty interesting book. You don’t have to add it to the poll, just thought I would post it for others in case they wanted to give it a try. :)
I’ve read that one-very entertaining!
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."

It took me a day and a half maybe? I read it while on vacation though so that may not be the best time frame.

I’ve read “Searching for Bobby Orr” at least 4 times to date – a great read, especially since he’s my all-time favorite. I also enjoyed “Ice Time” and “Boys of Winter.” I’m the type to read the coffee-table book “Hockey: A People’s History” from cover to cover, which I have done too, and someday I’ll get the DVD set.
CANIACS: If you know what's good for you, you won't admit to winning Tripp Bingo!!
I would love to read any of them, so I’m not voting and will just go along. I’m a slow reader but I’ll try and keep up. I didn’t see the previous post about this but would like to still join the club. great idea!
There is nothing to worry about. This is very informal and just seemed like appropriate side activity for a hockey blog over the summer.

When The People Fear Their Government,There is Tyranny;
When The Government fears The People, There Is Liberty
Sorry I'm a bit late...
Tropic of Hockey by Dave Bidini – searches for & plays hockey in Transylvania, Saudi Arabia & Hong Kong, amongst other places.
Behind the Red Line by Todd Hartje – biographical story of a drafted player is sent to Russia instead of the minors, before the fall of Communism there… some former Russian NHLers (such as Dmitri Kristich) are featured.
The Code – not a great read, but a necessary one, in my view.
