How loud is it? Game 1 decibel readings
So every announcer on TV kept talking about how Chicago was going to break the noise level for a NHL game. I always thought the Canes at the RBC center held that record but doing some research I'm not convinced. I can't find an OFFICIAL record anywhere. Most articles I've read claim the Sharktank as the loudest but can they prove it?
Game 1 Blackhawks vs. Flyers after looking at those stats I wasn't impressed, and that was not level breaking noise. I read the RBC center hit 128 decibels in game 7 in 2006 but couldn't find that confirmed.
Another article from 2006 include a players poll of the loudest NHL arena. Pens vs. Canes in game 3 last season, noise was brought up again by the Penguins. So who do you think has the loudest NHL arena?
Just to bring back some GREAT memories, listen to this.

Noise ?
seeing i wasn’t there..but i did have a NC State fan who goes there pretty regularly…that they take their nascar type of ear muffs to blot out the noise…and if there is a way to have someone @ RBCC to yank out the old deci meter…I too would like to have seen just how noisey it got. After all noise like that or that high really isn’t healthy for the fans …is it ? but who wants to sit with 16,999 other fans like you’re at a wake in a funeral parlor ? Not this fan !!

I remember lurking on a discussion at some point that revolved around the size of the building and the number of people being a better indicator of how loud it would be than just the number of people. The way I understood it, smaller buildings with lower roofs are louder because there is less space for the sound to fill. Granted, if you have 2 people in a small building, they aren’t going to be louder than 17,000 in a big building, but when the attendance is more balanced, the smaller building would sound louder.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
Right, newer buildings absorb sound better than the old one’s too, they use special materials throughout the building to dampen noise. Can you imagine what the echo would be like if they didn’t insulate The RBC Center.
That’s my understanding too. Which is probably why the old Chicago Stadium has long been regarded as the loudest arena ever in the NHL. I once heard that it got so loud in there, you could hear them on the street, which is what earned it the nickname “Madhouse on Madison.” However, in the 2006 playoffs, Don Cherry stated that he thought the RBC Center was even louder. :-) I’d be interested to find out what the decibel level was at the RBC the night they won the Cup… I know it was loud, but I honestly can’t remember how loud, I was too busy crying like a fool! LOL Either way, the 122 decibel level at the United Center IS still impressive, and I can only imagine the noise they will bring if the Blackhawks bring home the Cup after such a long wait!
