Poll: Halak Trade - Good, Bad, Other?
What do you think of the Jaroslav Halak trade? Should Gauthier have kept Halak and traded Price? Should Gauthier have at least talked to Halak and his agent first?
In return for Jaroslav Halak, Montreal received Lars Eller, a 1st round pick, and Ian Schultz, a gritty right winger. Is that enough of a return for a guy that stole 2 playoff series with a relatively underwhelming team in front of him? Should Gauthier have shelled out the rumored $3-4 million that Halak was asking for and deal the underperforming Price and his bad attitude?

I want an option describing how nuts the whole thing is. Sort of a “it’s too bizarre to get my brain around”

Serious HM! I’ve been on the Habs Eyes on the Prize blog all day trying to figure it out. This is what gets me; 1) Why do this after the guy carries you in the playoffs? 2) Why all of the confidence in Price? 3) Most of all: WHY NOT TALK TO HIM BEFORE YOU TRADE HIM?!
Sure, you say you “know” what he would go for, but why not talk to him? What’s the harm? Nobody has had an answer to that question yet.
In my opinion, Montreal has had it’s wagon hitched to Price and nothing outside of a Stanley Cup would have kept Halak in Montreal.

You can do twitter from your desktop and texting when you’re away. Smart phones make it easier but no need to wait. Especially with wacky trades like this announced first via twitter the next month or so. You can forward the tweets to your standard phone as text messages. Just @CanesCountry and @TSNBobMcKenzie and @ice_chip will get you what you need to know.

It comes up all the time in Ken Dryden’s book. Tabernac (tabernacle?and calisse (chalice) are terms used in Catholic mass (I think – apologies if I’m wrong) and are standard curse words in the Canadiens dressing room c 1979. Nothing like a hockeygeekmom ruining a good joke with a little history.

Actually, Ken Dryden’s book, which I read several years ago, was the first thing I thought of when I saw the post because he used it so much.
I’m just glad Go_Shelf rekindled the memory because I hadn’t thought of that word in a while and it’s always nice to have a vernacular of profanity in a foreign language.

That’s right and if you google it you get the same stuff, if you’ve ever heard it used real time the word that comes to mind in English is f*ck me.
From a french quebecois
Hello everyone,
I’m a french quebecois, and you’ve got the good way for our french bad word. (sorry for my bad english)
WTF = ostie de tabernac (when you said that, it’s a frustration liberation)
Tabernac (tabernacle?and calisse (chalice) are terms used in Catholic mass. Thats correct! We use this word until the quiet revolution en 1960 (soft revolution) in the province of Quebce because we kick out religon out on our laic school system.
But the fact, the french population are very sad about this trade. He was the god of the Montreal Temple (Centre Bell) last spring. But in the same time, we can understand they put i’m on the market trade. Also, we think that Price don’t have the same value then Halak (less) but they still believe then Price will be a better goaltender in a few year. They will see. It’s a gamble.
Why they do the trade… $ and the competition between both goaltender. The salary will be hard to respect next year if they want to Keep Plekanec (5 millions/year). Halak demand probably around 4 million$/year or more.
For myself, i really think this will be not the only move the CH will do.
Thank you for stopping by and telling your point of view. Really wonderful to hear from someone “on the inside”. Bon chance!

Ah! Non – mais – un petit peu? Seulement 3 years high school French. You’ve heard all I know. But I do enjoy hearing about hockey from Montreal. A special place.

Talk about a bolt from the blue…see what I did there? St. Louis? the Blues?
Anyway, Price is an RFA as well. Don’t be surprised if he gets dealt. There aren’t a ton of FA goalies out there, but there are a few (Mason, Nabokov). Montreal may be looking for a makeover.
Actually – I keep seeing that there are a ton of UFA goalies this summer. And that’s part of the reasoning people are speculating this was done. I have to put my kids to bed but the Globe and Mail (James Mirtle) or maybe Pierre LeBrun just posted something on it before the trade was announced.

By “aren’t a ton” I meant not a lot of goalies that a franchise like Montreal felt they could ride into the ECF. Halak’s regular season numbers put him in the conversation, but I don’t think he’s considered an elite goalie. Montreal’s surprising run and Halak’s numbers would make me think that he has the potential to become a top 5 goalie in the conference, and the trade today is surprising. Also, in a hockey-mad town like Montreal, how could you trade one of your playoff heroes? It’s like Roddy putting up 7-11 in a seven-game loss, and JR cutting him loose. Canadiens fans must be going nuts.
See, even this would make it more understandable, but then he goes on talking about how they have all the confidence in the world with Price in net. It doesn’t look like they’re going this route, but who knows.

Agreed, especially with his attitude. I would just be so angry if I were a Habs fan that Gauthier didn’t even talk to Halak. Crazy.

I’m with HM. If I hadn’t seen it coming from Bob McKenzie I would have thought it was some sort of joke. It’s mind boggling. To me Price is the very definition of “over hyped” and to now pretty much guarantee he’ll have to be the one seems insane.
The only thing I can possibly think is that the GM was afraid they wouldn’t be able to resign Halak and would lose him for nothing. But that kind of goes out the window when you remember the GM never even talked to Halak.
This may be too conspiracy theory but maybe this has something to do with Price not wanting to compete for the starting position? :shrugs:
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
I’m with your logic all the way. To me it makes no sense to not at least talk to the guy, unless this: let’s say Gauthier is set on going with Price. If he talks to Halak and Halak gives him a reasonable number, then Gauthier looks even worse by letting him go, especially after the playoff performance he had. But this way, he can just say “I know what he would want”, he escapes the possibility that he has to turn down Halak on a reasonable price. I don’t think it was about money, it’s about being set on Price and never going with Halak no matter what, which is a whole other head scratcher.

Good point. I hadn’t taken my thought process that next step yet, but it definitely makes sense. Perhaps Gauthier chose to look insane rather than, for lack of a better word, “backstabbing”. Of course going with Price over just about anyone (no questions asked mind you) seems ridiculous which only adds to the insanity defense Gauthier has working.
"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."
Here's my theory: A Coin Flip
As far as I can tell Gauthier decided to give Price heads and Halak tails and flipped a coin. There was no reason for Gauthier to call Halak because all he could say to Halak is, congratulations, I am getting you out of the nuthouse called the Montreal Canadiens. Thank your lucky coin,
Of all the crazy things I’ve seen in the NHL, this trade is right up there with Burke’s planet xeno trade for Kessell. Seriously, they need to stay away from the hard liquor before negotiating trades.
As I heard on XM this a.m., Gainey is still an adviser to Gauthier and the Habs. He was a HUGE Price backer, so i wonder if that influenced things. On the same note, I wonder if Montreal will look at Marty Turco, who was drafted by Gainey in Dallas and, I think, played a season or two there before Gainey left the Stars.
by Cory Lavalette on Jun 18, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I also wonder if trading Price meant taking on salary in return, which potentially could have impacted the negotiations with Plekanec.
I mentioned this elsewhere, but I’ll add it here. I think the NHL is moving out of the goaltender dominated era. Whether it’s the rules, the forwards getting better, or the previous crop of tenders just being phenomenal historically I don’t know. If Micheal Leighton can get a team to the cup finals and Anti Niemi can win a cup that means to me that the goaltender era (aka dead puck era) is over.
I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
I thought of putting one, but didn’t want to incite a Habs flame-war.

I am sorry…but I must have been watching another Halak on a different channel…playing for another playoff series!!!! Seriously?!?!? I am with LTD, WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT!
Halak gets you through two rounds of eliminating the 2 best teams in the conference and you give him the boot…what has price done for you lately Montreal?
Crazy!
RAKASTAN SUOMEN!!
Both are kind of similar. Sure, Halak got hot, but so can any goalie. On HEotP they did a story on how MTL gives Price like zero support against tough opposition while Halak gets easier opponents in general with more goal support. Either way, neither has played enough to get a good sense of how good they are, and Price is younger, so I don’t see how you don’t go with Price (except for the MTL factor—I don’t think Price will stop being a headcase until he’s outta there).
Plus, Halak’s trade value will never be higher.

I wouldn’t call shutting down both Pittsburgh AND Washington in 7 game Playoff series simply “being hot”. Those are two of the best offenses in the whole NHL.
He was either hot, cold, or normal. Which do you think it was?

Horrible deal, not sure what they were thinking, had to be a cap issue. Price has off ice issues, he seemed more likely to be moved.
I was " schocked"
but that is the business of hockey…but still the dummy cold have talked with Halak and said something…but to do it like that…totally sucks…

Here’s a column on the trade from the Montreal Gazette
Not happy:
Don’t take my word for it. Instead, the wire report of the trade still was sizzling when I received this message from my mentor Jack Todd: "Is this the time to mention that, in addition to what may be the worst trade since (Patrick) Roy to Colorado, the Canadiens fired six scouts after picking up a $30-million windfall in the playoffs, thanks to Halak.

Dumb dumb dumb
I think we just got a step closer to making the playoffs this year! Thank you Montreal!! Open season on Price…..
a little story
Around four year ago!
Halak was the #1 goaler for the Bulldog Hamilton (AHL). He won the goaler of the year. The same year, In the playoff, Price lose in is junior team, so Gainey want i’m in the AHL. He call the coach and say, give the net to Price. What happen? Price won the Culder Cup with the Bulldog. Amazing situation for Halak.
The 5th pick overall in the Draft 2005 (Price) pass over the 271th pick in 2003 (Halak).
After that, the next 4 year was a typical story like “day’s of our live” (tv serie). Halak was never and ever considering #1 goaltender. And the management CH staff try to look better in front the fan. Why? The CH was no succes in the draft pick from 2000 until know. Except PK Subban.
In january 2010, his agent (Walsh i think) stop all negociation with the CH and Halak ask for a trade. Until this time to today. It was wright on the sky then Halak will be trade but when? Today we know.
I hope i was clear enough!
Good day!
Thanks for the inside info Nickolas!
Interesting to see how this all came to be.
