Kings Target Tim Gleason?

this from the hockey insider:

http://nhlsourcessay.blogspot.com/2010/06/kings-to-target-tim-gleason.html

Kings To Target Tim Gleason

The L.A. Kings will target Tim Gleason this off season. Gleason has been on the Kings radar for some time. Sources feel it will eventually get done. Talks for this possible swap should heat up come draft day.

Note: A good source has brought to my attention that Paul Martin is another option on the Kings list.

i dont see this happening?

am i misinformed, or is this just news drummming?

No way we trade him. If JR did, it would destroy our D…

Kings Bet on Jack Johnson and Bet Wrong

Tim Gleason is an untouchable. He is the heart and soul of the Hurricanes defense. I don’t blame the Kings for wanting Gleason; but they can’t have him back.

This would be a huge mistake, but I don’t think JR would be dumb enough to do this. If last season showed us anything, it showed which players are vital to this team and Timmy is one of those players.

If they do trade Timmy, accept nothing less than Hickey and their 1st round pick. And I would seek more than that.

If they offered up Kopitar, I might…MIGHT… be good with it.

I hate the thought of taking that much heart away from the team. I just don’t see it happening.

It depends on how much rebuilding JR wants to do. If JR for some reasons found in necessary to completely rebuild the defense then I could see LA as a trade partner for Gleason. They have defensive prospects that they can move and draft picks. LA is out west and has the cap room to re-acquire Tim.

Personally I don’t think it’s a good idea. Keeping a guy who is signed for a few more years and is only 27 seems to be the smarter way too go.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

Fun trade possibility

So, this idea popped in to my head and I thought it would be fun to share.

What if Gleason is sent to LA for Tuebert + some combination of picks and prospects and then the Canes trade the # 7 and the + from the previous trade to Boston for the #2 pick.

I’d like to get Hickey out of LA more, but the + that comes along with Hickey might not be enough to combine with the #7 pick to get the #2 out of Boston.

So, do you want Gleason and #7 or Tuebert and Seguin?

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 20, 2010 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

It’s all moot, because Boston won’t do that trade. They, too, need to shed salary, not gain it.

So, for that to even have a chance, the “+” needs to be in the form of picks or prospects that are not yet NHL-ready.

by Elsker on Jun 20, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

The + is exactly picks and prospects.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 20, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that would only work if the “+” is LA’s 1st Round pick (#19 Overall). But I doubt they trade Gleason, he is way to affordable for his role on the team. I think it is much more likely they try to trade Pitkanen (which they could easily get a 1st + more with).

by JussiJuice on Jun 20, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

NO WAY- KEEP TIMMY, and Joni TOO!!

Trading very good, young D-men is beyond stupid!! (BIRDS IN HAND)! Neither of these guys should go anywhere! If we’re gonna dismantle the team, we might as well trade Staal, and free up all that SALARY!! (ANOTHER DUMB IDEA…)

by randycane on Jun 20, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, I think last season showed us the importance of a healthy Staal & Joni and what they mean to the lineup. The same for Sutter & Gleason to maybe a LITTLE lesser degree. Those 4 plus Cam are what I consider the “core” must haves. Ruutu and Jussi are the next level down. They are very good players that I would like to keep, but could be moved for the right return.

The Canes won’t be able to afford Joni when he demands $5-6 million as an Unrestricted Free Agent next off-season. He is far too good for our budget, I think it is a virtual certainty that he gets traded at some point.

Trust me, I’d love to keep him too, unfortunately so would every other powerhouse team in the league that can afford to spend to the Cap every year.

by JussiJuice on Jun 20, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what you’re saying JJ, but the offense doesn’t have any flow without Joni. I’m not the biggest fan of Pumpkinhead, but we see what he brings to the team. If the Canes are never going to be able to afford anybody, what is the point of have a team? I don’t want to become the Montreal Expos of the NHL; developing younger players to let them go when they enter their prime.

That is the unfortunate reality of being a Cap cellar dwelling team… Look at Nashville. They constantly have talented players coming through and every offseason end up having to trade them because they can’t afford them.

It will be a huge loss (and probably a big mistake), but I think you could make the same argument about Whitney. If they can’t afford him, who can they afford? The answer is they can’t afford anyone. They already said they won’t be active in the Free Agency market.

by JussiJuice on Jun 20, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

While I don’t like it, I somewhat understand why the Canes are never players in the Free Agency market. You generally overpay and you have no idea how that individual actually fits with the team. But a player you’ve had for 3 years, you do know those answers. If the organization is unwilling to sign its own players, what hope do we have of ever being a good consistent team? Are we just going to be forever searching for the right combination of cheap players others have discarded? Every once in a while, we catch lightning in a bottle and have a good year? I know PK doesn’t want to lose money, but “passions” are more than money. They are a sense of pride and love and people are willing to forgo finances for passions. If the team is not willing to spend money to try and field a winner, really what is the point?

If Gleason was to be traded, getting Dustin Brown in return in some sort of package would be nice. He can play any situation, can score around 25 goals a season, and has a decent salary/contract. If you put him on Sutter’s right side; that a very good start of a VERY good two-way line. They have some wheels, physicality, scoring ability, and are good defensive forwards.

If we trade Gleason and don’t get Doughty in return, I will no longer be a fan of the Canes while Rutherford is still the GM. Gleason is my favorite player and is key to our defense. Plus, he’ll be one of the only experienced guys we have soon if we can’t afford Pitkanen.

by GoACanes87 on Jun 20, 2010 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t see any reason the Kings would trade Doughty for Gleason. They want Gleason to compliment Doughty, not to replace him.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

If we got Doughty for Gleason (or anyone), the world would up and spin off its axis. If they traded Doughty, it would be the dumbest move in a loooooong time.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 20, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

GoACanes87 comment is not that he would expect to get Doughty, because let’s be honest that would not be a fair trade. He’s saying the only way he would be okay with Timmy getting traded is if we were to get Doughty in return, i.e. if we get anyone else back he would not be a fan of the Canes anymore. GoACanes87 isn’t trying to say that Gleason for Doughty is what LA wants to do; that would be an awful trade for the Kings. A solid heart and soul defenseman for a Norris Trophy candidate that is 5 years younger is not an even trade.

by Caniac Kid on Jun 20, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

thank you, that's exactly what I was saying.

I don’t expect Doughty to go anywhere, but I don’t want to see Gleason leave, and that’s the only way I’d be okay with a Gleason trade to LA.

not making a threat

but remember 2 things…where the idea came from about Gleason going to LA and secondly…If that were to happen…the Canes front office would lose more seats even if they had members of the storm squad nude…not being nasty mind you but In reality i just don’t see thart happening..but in the business of hockey…one never rally knows…after all JR brought A.Ward back didn’t he ?

The ONLY reason to move Timmy G...

….would to be to piss off the fans and empty a few thousand more seats in the RBC, ensuring that when the time comes moving or selling to someone who wants to move the team can happen.
