At about the 4 minute mark, I understand him to say the following:

They anticipate the 2010-11 salary budget will be between $43 and 44 million, matching the floor. This is to be profitable without making the playoffs. Once the new owner is established, he expects to raise the budget and contend again for playoff hockey. In a couple years.

It's gonna be a long summer.

What I heard… he expects the floor to be between $43-$44m, and he expects the budget to be between $43-$45m.

So yeah, floor or really, really, really close to it.

The comments about Roddie pain me more than the budget comments. Tough situation and the timing could not be worse.

It is tough to listen to these choices. He seems steady, but not particularly comfortable with all this.

It's gonna be a long summer.

But he made me feel better when I heard these him say these six words.

Staal. Ward. Ruutu. Sutter. Gleason. Pitkanen.

If I have those, I have hope!

Those are your 6 Untouchables. Missing Jussi’s name I guess. But those 6 are the right 6.

It's gonna be a long summer.

I appreciated the order in which he rolled them off. Would have appreciated hearing Jussi’s name though.

A goalie, 2 centers, 1 wing and 2 D… slim pickings. I would have liked to hear Jussi’s name as well.

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

Just now finishing the listen. And I agree with your assessment. Steady, forthright, and uncomfortable.

And I believe him for the most part. Don’t believe he’s really tipping his hand about the draft.

Yep – just like the goalie waiting for the shooter to commit. He’s got that down cold.

It's gonna be a long summer.

And one other thing. He does appreciate this fanbase.

This is a response to LTD way above re the pain JR conveys for Brind`Amour’s future: The fact that it is “so difficult” for him – the most difficult decision since he became GM in10+ years – tells me there’s gonna be a buy-out announced in the next 10 days.

It's gonna be a long summer.

by Carolyn Christians on Jun 21, 2010 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I really do think they’ll wait until after the draft to make a “final” decision, just to have the opportunity to re-evaluate the situation after they know the outcome of the draft.

But still, that’s a two million dollar delta to next season’s budget, right?

($3m paid next season versus $1m and $1m across two seasons with the buyout, correct?)

Is it just me, or does Rutherford looks like he’s aged 10 years in the last 2 months. Maybe that shirt color just isn’t good on him. He chose his words very carefully when talking about the “direction the organization is now going”. Think he’s not too happy with Karmanos?

At least twice, the words he used describing the hunt for a new partner also included the possibility of a 100% new owner. Wonder if they’re having a hard time finding a 49% owner?

I did like the way he talked about the fan base. Slightly off topic, but I received a surprise in the mall today. I guess what we bid at the Casino Night night bumped us up into a certain donor level. We got a copy of the Kids ‘N Community Annual Report – signed by all the players. With it was a letter from JR talking about the Canes commitments to the community. I’ll link a picture later, but it kind of made my day with all the downer news that’s been passing around lately.

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

That’s very cool news about the signed report, Cyn! Way cool!

I didn’t think JR looked any different than usual as far as aging is concerned. Although he did mention in an interview a couple of weeks ago that he’s been having back problems, so I can’t imagine that would help his demeanor.

And I really don’t think it’s a matter of him not being happy with his boss.

I think it’s just a difficult and serious situation.

I would feel better if a buy-out would give them another 1 mil to keep Whit as a veteran leader for this very young team. He said he wanted Whit to stay and he believed Whit would prefer to stay——-but thought he would sign for more money elsewhere.

He said Whit could decide any time this summer, if he chose to stay, and the offer would be there.

Looks like full re-build mode is here. A budget, non play-off team that can be competitive and turn a profit——and develop into a contender in a few years? Seems we fans will
have to go with the flow. Wish I had not upgraded my tickets just yet, cause my budget could have used the extra funds, too. (Would have much rather used the extra money to go see the Checkers some.) Still a strong fan, mind you, but not overly happy right now.

Help with Link

My browsers (Mozilla and IE8) are not seeing the embedded link. I would really appreciate somebody giving me the URL for the 17 minute video interview.
