Hurricanes release 2010-11 Schedule

The NHL has released the entire season's schedule for 2010 - 11. As anticipated, October will be a challenge for the young Hurricanes with 9 of the first 11 games on the road. In theory, the March and April schedule make up for fall odyssey from Helsinki to Vancouver to Phoenix, with 12 of the last 19 games in March and April set to be played in the RBC Center.

Expect the Fox Carolinas and Versus broadcast schedules to be released later this summer. Last year, the league did not announce the game schedule till August, and Versus and FSC TV broadcast schedules were announced August 19th and August 28th, respectively.

After the jump, the schedule in its entirety.

New Years

No game on 12/31 this year. Will have to find something to do for the first time, in what, 7 years?

by darman1484 on Jun 22, 2010 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

I haven’t yet decided if I’m happy about this or sad. The last couple of years we’ve bailed after the game to go elsewhere, which was hectic given the game didn’t end until 10:30.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 22, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I like this. I’ve had to skip several New Year Eve’s parties over the past couple of years. This way I can still party on 12/31 and go to a game 1/1.

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

So to show their appreciation for hosting this year’s AS game, we are given a 7 game road trip from Oct. 7-23 (because that IS NOT a home game in Finland), a 5 game road trip Dec. 4-16, and another 5 game road trip Feb 8-16. Plus the little added bonus of 21 back to backs, where I believe 19 of which require travel.

The best part is that we and the team are given a 3 game home stand Nov 6-11, a 4 gamer Feb 18-25, and yet another LONG 3 game one Mar 18-25. Boy oh boy, if that doesn’t spell a crap schedule, I really don’t know what does. This is the worst I think I have seen them ever get, at least in the past few years. I don’t know how this thing was made, but this is an unbalanced schedule IMO and it sucks.

It is an amazing series of back-to-backs. Add in the ridiculous start, 8 games in 19 days on the road, from St Petersburg through Phoenix, and you can see why “the Organization” is thinking youth. People over 30 can not handle this kind of schedule. I was going to figure out the mileage of the travel from Oct 1 thru 19. Might make that 6 weeks on the road for Vancouver around the Olympics seem like a snackrun to the 7/11.

It's gonna be a long summer.

by Carolyn Christians on Jun 22, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Seems a little ridiculous to me… They are going to be dead tired. Hopefully this won’t lead to another winless Away schedule for half the year.

by JussiJuice on Jun 22, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s not much that can be done about the early season road swing. With the trip to Finland and the State Fair the boys were going to be gone for a while. At least they kill two birds (Finland and west coast swing) at once. Who knows, it could be a good bonding experience for the team.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 22, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

My issue is the fact that we play 3 stretches of 5 games or more in a row, and all they can do is schedule ONE 4 game home stand?

This is the worst bout of game scheduling I have seen in a long while….

The Canes have a preference for playing home games on the weekend, as I’m sure all teams do, but they generally make it a top priority. Combine that with the few games played on Sunday, and only two conflicting with football, and that’s the result.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 22, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I just wish there was more parity in the way the games fell. Guess the Canes will have to claw their way out of this one.

I just tweeted this, but from October 2 to 24, the Hurricanes will travel 15,786 miles, spanning 13 timezones, go through customs 6 times, playing 8 games in 7 cities in 4 countries. Wow!

They return just in time to welcome the Caps to Raleigh on Oct 27th.

It's gonna be a long summer.

They should have built the ESA/RBC downtown. At least there; there are a few places to eat & drink, there are a few hotels, the convention center, it would have helped with downtown development, and WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO SCHEDULE AROUND THE FREAKIN’ STATE FAIR!

True, but Raleigh’s downtown isn’t all that big. I cannot imagine how they would fit the RBC in there…

They could have put it in the warehouse district, where Dillon Supply use to be.

And when the plan began (1996?), wasn’t it all about the NCSU Centennial Campus and tapping into the growth of RTP? When did they really start to focus on downtown Raleigh as an Urban Center. Since 2005 I think.

It's gonna be a long summer.

by Carolyn Christians on Jun 22, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

if it had been built later, i bet they would’ve. they didn’t even open fayetteville street back up till 2006 right? downtown has really exploded in the past several years

by chrisbrasfield on Jun 22, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe the plan for replacing Reynolds began in the 80s. There was debate from the start on where to put the arena. Many believed that downtown was more appropriate because of the convenience for NCSU students and the hope it would spur downtown development. But, money won out as always because land was cheaper in West Raleigh.

The really bad thing is a downtown arena (even one in a small downtown like Raleigh) would be more attractive to host certain events and in turn that would help some with the Hurricanes revenue problems.

by PackPride17 on Jun 22, 2010 7:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You’re right about the location, but wrong about the time frame. The team doesn’t have the money to build an arena and neither does the city. The state won’t get involved because if the Canes do move out of the RBC then the state will have to pay someone to manage the building (something Gale Force does at the present moment).

As someone who is very much behind downtown revitalization and transit oriented development I’ve been a big fan of the idea of having the arena downtown. Or, at least I was, until I realized what Gunning For The Cup posted above. Downtown arena means restricted tailgating if any.

On a side note, the location of the arena is fairly centrally located from a regional standpoint. Easy access to and from Durham via Wade Avenue/I-40. Easy access to Wake Forest via Creedmoor road. Easy access to Cary via US 1. Plus, it gets to share some infrastructure with the Football Stadium.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

Wow the beginning of the season will be tough on the young Canes. Seven hard road games before the first home one. That stretch will tell us a lot about this year’s team.

by DesertCaniac on Jun 22, 2010 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

I was just thinking they may send a group of kids to the European trip and then rotate them out with some in Charlotte for fresh legs before doing the 5 games from Ottawa to Phoenix.

It's gonna be a long summer.

We’ll all look back on this, in 2015 when we’re hosting Game 1 of the Cup Finals, and refer to these fondly as the lean years, that make the victory even sweeter. At least that’s what I keep telling myself so I don’t jump off a cliff. (jk!)

It's gonna be a long summer.

by Carolyn Christians on Jun 23, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I really do hope you’re right HM2. That’s the reason I’m sticking around. I don’t mind a few lean years if it means competitive hockey and a string of playoff appearances (say 5 in 6 years or something along those lines). I just hope this is a few lean years and not the start of a trend a la Chicago after the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.
