Jerome Samson, who led the AHL's Albany River Rats in scoring last season, has been signed to a two-year contract, the Hurricanes have announced. According to an article on Carolina's site, Samson will earn $500,000/$105,000 in the first year of the deal (NHL salary/AHL salary) and $525,000/$105,000 in 2011-12.

Samson was a first-team All-Star in the AHL last season, scoring 37 goals and finishing with 78 points. He had two assists and 10 penalty minutes in seven games with the Hurricanes last season.

Fantastic!

I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear this. I’ve watched him evolve in Albany and he’s definately worked hard enough to deserve this. Great news!

Hey! Rooting for the Checkers from NY :) I’m undecided on the new logo and the new team. I guess we’ll have to see what happens. Take care, Cheers!

I guess we can plug that into our $43-45 mil budget.

It's gonna be a long summer.

Certainly. But he’s gotta be in the mix. Guess we need to hear final word on Whitney, Samsonov and Brind`Amour and wait till September. Gonna be a helluva camp.

It's gonna be a long summer.

Indeed. If I had to guess I’d say Whitney gone, Samsonov bought out, Brindy back for his last year.

I think Rod’s gonna get some bad news. Rutherford looks like he’s just sick about having to be the one to do it. Not sure what I hope for. This is lose/lose.

It's gonna be a long summer.

Yeah, in that 17 min. interview he sounded like he was pretty annoyed, the way he said that Rod has the right to take as long as he wants, as if he was reminding himself of the fact.

You’re right though, it’s lose/lose.

I could be wrong, but I think he really doesn’t be the one to make the call. He can’t delegate it though – and he kept using the word “organization” making the decision, so that it was understood he wasn’t calling the shots necessarily. Karmanos told him to get the budget to $44mil, maybe $45mil. Rutherford is between a rock and a hard place and certainly doesn’t want to be part of the Brind`Amour legacy in this role.

I don’t envy him, but then I’m not making the big bucks to carry this load. It’s not a simple thing at all.

It's gonna be a long summer.

ahem – he really doesn’t want to be the one to make the call. (so sorry)

Yeah, that’s the feeling I get too. It’s an unfortunate position to be in.

FWIW, when I heard JR say he can take as long as he wants I interpreted that to mean that Rod will be back unless he retires.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 23, 2010 6:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha. You’ve already seen my theory on twitter, but I’m finally at a real keyboard so here goes.

I believe that JR and team will do anything they can roster-wise to accommodate Roddie without buying him out. They’ll probably buy out Sergei, and who knows what kind of magic they can work during the draft. Maybe they can shed salary somewhere that we haven’t considered.

Listening to Scott Niedermayer’s retirement speech today on XM on my drive home, there is no way the organization wants to take that away from one of the faces of our franchise. Now, that’s something they may not want to do and will go to great lengths to avoid, but in the end they may not be able to avoid it.

They’ll postpone it as long as they can just to see where all the cards fall after the draft and any trades, signings, etc. leading up to free agency.

Then, if there is no choice, I think they will call Rod into the office and offer him two choices. One is to announce his retirement, upon which the organization signs him to a consulting agreement or other position in the organization. Terms will be undisclosed, but I’d bet they would be close to $1m a year for 2 years. Under this scenario he makes the announcement and we raise his jersey to the rafters next year.

The other choice is he gets bought out, at $1m a year x 2 years. That way, if he still wants to play hockey somewhere, he has the opportunity.

His choice.

There’s a reason I shouldn’t be left alone in a car for seven hours.

Hey LTD? I like the way you think. I pray to the hockey gods that he takes the first option, more for the fans that want to send him out in style than anything else.

Good move. Samson did very well in the AHL and he deserves this contract. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of points he put up for Albany, and I think he’s a good man to have in the system. Hopefully he can bring that to the NHL.

This was a good signing. Samson played his way to a new contract. I could see him as a dynamite 4th liner and he’s CHEAP!

JR said it would have been a one-way deal if Samson went and told Rod he was fired, but Samson wouldn’t do it. :)

A 4th liner ~ hopefully / eventually a C. LaRose replacement.

Well at least he can replace the overpaided LaRose eventually. Decent move just never been super excited about Samson as a player or goal scorer/grinder. Like I said I would prefer to have him on the team (vs.) the way overpaided Chad LaRose.

Decent move but nothing to write home about that is for sure.

good move

I think it was a good move. Samson’s young and he can score goals and play with alot of energy. If the hurricanes need to free up some lower line spots for some rookies, Pat Dwyer is expendable as is Tom Kostopoulos. These guys don’t really produce much. Kostopoulos was a grinder, but the hurricanes can get the equivalent physical presence from Larose, Ruutu, Samson, and a healthy Erik Cole. Samson did his job of providing some veteran leadership to the young guys last season and its time for him to move on. On defense, Pothier is worth resigning for a year, but Picard can be traded for a draft pick or a prospect. Brind’Amour should retire. he doesn’t fit with the directions the Hurricanes are going, and is not in the same physical shape he was a few years ago. Whitney still has 1 or 2 good years left and can provide some leadership for the younger players

Not TKO...

Tommy is more than a grinder, but we don’t have anybody who is better at what he does! Scoring goals is only part of the game, Tommy’s real good at some of those other things! It takes a team to win, offense and defense!!

Good news

He’s definitely worth a contract. He plays so well down low, and I expect him to make the starting roster, hopefully on the third line to get some playing time. He’d do well in a checking role too. Have him grind out behind the net and feed the speedy Tlusty for some goals. I like this youth movement even though it’ll cost us Whitney and Brindy. Bring up some youth and use this draft to restock. Go ’Canes!
