Carolina Hurricanes Select Justin Faulk With 37th Overall Pick

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 26: Justin Faulk, drafted in the second round by the Carolina Hurricanes poses for a portrait during day two of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at Staples Center on June 26, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Los Angeles, CA  According to the ISS, the Carolina Hurricanes went off the board a bit with their opening second round draft pick when they chose Justin Faulk, but Jim Rutherford was very pleased to get him.  Faulk, a defenseman who scored 21 goals in the USHL last season, was ranked lower by some services, but not so by the Hurricanes.

The 6'0 blueliner has a quick release and heavy shot.  He was a bit surprised to be picked by the Canes but was very pleased and hopes to make an impression this camp.

Here is more information about Faulk from the Western College Hockey Blog.

Check out a video of his media interview after the jump.

WOW JR done real good!!

1st Faulk not a reach – RLR had him ranked at #21!! 2ND- Hardest shot from the point in the WHOLE DRAFT! He’s gonna be good. Alt, Biega, Shugg- all good prospects. Big goalie prospect (from Norway) and another Stahl- what’s not to like??

..forgot

Sanguinetti from NYR might be playing in Raleigh sometime this year.

Sanguinetti could take a roster spot out of training camp

Having seen Sanginetti play in the AHL and watching Rangers games on center ice, I think Sanguinetti is likely to take a roster spot out of training camp. He is a talented defender who should do well under the Canes system.

Sanguinetti has had two full seasons of experience in the AHL. He seems to be itching to get his shot in the NHL, I wouldn’t be surprised if he became a permanent fixture in our top-6 next year.

The Rangers fans seem pretty disappointed with him. the Rangers SBN Blog gave him the “jimmy hoffa” award for disappearing act of this season. Hopefully this trade is the kick in the butt he needs.

today one fan wrote(I know nothing if the guy is credible, but his tone is matched by the others)

look, bobby did it to himself, he could’ve done well for himself last year but he came to camp completely out of shape, couldn’t finish torts’ training regimen (he actualy collapsed midway through, remember) and he didn’t grow defensively. it’s sad that the former 1st rounder goes down like this for us, but he bummed himself down the drain

Rangers Blog Tones

Well, I’ve read the Rangers blogs from time to time and to say they approach their team differently than Canes Country is a huge understatement. From what I can tell from following Torts throughout his career, he is a very difficult on his players.

Did anybody see the picture of Sanguinetti that BlueShirt Banter put up for the trade thread? It was not very nice; they had Sanguinetti getting rocked against the boards. There’s nothing like a good kick to the ass as your walking out the door.

Yeh +1

Sometimes over-zealous folks here tend to forget he REALLY GETS PAID to do this!!!

I just read the link at Western College Hockey blog Bob put up there ^ . Really helpful. Sounds a lot like a Corvo-type player, similar size and booming slapshot, PP QB. Young and makes defensive blunders, but hopefully will learn at Minnesota-Duluth. And hopefully a little lot more stable mentally. (sorry Joe)

Is he a left or right shot?

That’s same as Corvo, yes? Which is unusual and valuable, IIRC the way Bruce Boudreau talked.

Yes, Corvo is/was a right shot, and that does seem to be rare, at least on our roster.

Utility of that right shot is to park them on the left side on the power play for a quicker one-timer opportunity on the cross-ice pass from an angle a bit closer to center ice.

Just because I can

I went to NHL.com and among the 299 Dmen active this season, 204 were LH shots, which is 68.2%

Justin Faulk

Here’s a feature on Justin from Dec. 2009 on the USA Hockey site.

In particular, this quote from his coach was interesting:

"He can shoot the puck like Al McInnis," Under-18 coach Kurt Kleinendorst said. "He can flat out shoot the puck. Physically, he might be our strongest defenseman. You watch him play and he is strong, the way he physically handles the puck, the way he shoots the puck and the way he can control his puck on his stick."

And, also these high words of praise:

"I wish that I could bottle him — the way he handles himself as a player and he way he handles himself as a person. He was definitely raised the right way. He is easy to pull for," Kleinendorst said.

The prospect wonks at the HockeyFutures board were sure unanimous in their praise of this pick. I’m grading this one as a near-lock NHL’er.

Minnesota Prospects Profile...

…can be found here.

Has a knack for using his stick to pick pocket the opposition in the corners. Has great agility and transitions in a flash. Not very physical but is willing to dish it out. Faulk is the equivalent to a corner in the NFL, he can shadow anyone. Uses great positioning and decision making to take away opponents available options. Could use a little polish on his offensive game, sometimes treats the puck like a hot potato in the opponents zone.

This just came out today on Faulk, over at the College Hockey site.

The NTDP boys (12 of whom were drafted this year) hung out all the time and still stay in touch. They even handed out a few superlatives at the end of the year to each other as well.
"I got Most Likely To Be a Zamboni Driver," Faulk said. "I think I got that because a lot of the guys just know I love to be around the rink and hang out. I love hockey and that’s just kind of the way I am as a person.
"But memory-wise, winning the gold medal in Belarus this past spring was definitely one of the best memories. We dreamed of that for the last two years as a team. That was our goal from day one. It was just great."

Faulk sounds good

Just like RLR said when they ranked him #21, “hammers rockets from the point”. Our D-men quality level is on the rise!! ME THINKS!!
