Card of the Week: Staal, Cole, and Sutter

To help us get through the summer, I thought it might be interesting to start a new feature called "Card of the Week".  (Although we might actually do this more than once per week).  I came across this card on Ebay the other night and had a good chuckle.  The card is included in the latest and greatest from the 2009-10 edition of Be A Player cards, and they are selling at a pretty good pace right now.

But their quality control might need some improvement.

If you have a unique card or an old one you think people would be interested in seeing, send me a photo at canescountry@gmail.com.  If it gets posted, you will be in the running for a prize that we will give out at the end of the summer for the best additions. (a t-shirt or a puck).  Good luck!

Mouths!

So avoiding the obvious signature botch, what’s up with all the mouths being open? And could they have picked a worse picture for our captain? He looks like he saw a ghost….

They held up the camera and said, “Quick! Do your best fish-on-a-hook impression!” then snapped a pic.

Nice. :)

Guess Cole wants to be Staal….and Staal wishes he could grow a beard like Cole.. Sutter is happy just being Sutter…( CG is happy with that also)

Staal can’t even be on a card without his binky and a play date!

I have a couple of cool jerseys and sticks and such as collectibles, but I don’t have any cards either. As the parent of an eight-year-old that collects Pokemon cards, I would like to get my son interested in hockey card collecting. So as part of this feature I’d be interested in learning more about what types and series of cards folks collect and why. Recommendations would be appreciated!

My kids always (when they were younger) liked going to the aisle at Target with the other cards. 2010-11 hockey cards won’t appear till fall (may be hard to find any 09-10 at this point). From my experience, get him a variety of brands so he can see how they differ – you’re not really looking at an investment I’d think – that takes the fun out of the “quantity thrill” for an 8-yr-old. The Rookie cardsets are also fun in years to come.

My boys would sort and trade with their friends and got to know a lot about other teams and the players stats just from doing that. Then there are always the fan events where the more serious collectors sell them individually, for $1 – $Much more for the really interesting player/year combinations.

It's gonna be a long summer.

You may also want to consider

buying boxes of Hobby Cards instead of those found at Wal-Mart or Target. You are not always guaranteed the cool autos and jersey cards in the packs that are found in Wal-Mart or Target. Find a card store nearby and talk with the owners. They can get you into the hot brands and what is popular. These cards are more expensive, but are a better investment. I recommend buying a box. You can dole them out for good behavior, grades, etc.

I’ve got a Chad LaRose rookie card that I got autographed at a Caniac Carnival, numerous other Hurricanes cards, a Ray Whitney Florida Panthers card, a Ron Francis card from sometime around 2001, a 1992 Ron Francis Penguins card, a Joe Sakic Quebec Nordiques card, and a few more that came in packs. I guess you could say I’m a collector, but only somewhat.
