Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

The Carolina Hurricanes need a defenseman. The New York Rangers need some scoring help — and on the cheap. It may be the easiest trade to speculate, but wouldn't Rangers blueliner Marc Staal look good in red, playing alongside older brother in Eric in Raleigh? (The conversation is over at "From the Rink" blog)

I would offer anyone they wanted outside of Staal, Ward, Sutter, and Gleason. I would just be worried that if the Rangers can’t afford to sign him, how are we going to be able to?

okay so I was thinking.. what id we traded jussi to the rangers for staal and then replaced him with kovalchuck? People would pay to see Kovalchuk and adding another staal brother to the mix would help ticket sales a lot I believe.

If we can’t afford to keep Whit then we can’t afford another Staal ! (Unless, of course, this whole cheap, cheap budget is a farce.)

Just read “from the Rink” above———-NO WAY WOULD I want Jussi to be in a trade for the rights to Staal !!! We just lost one scoring winger————NO, NO, NO.

HM am surprised you didn’t say anything about that ! : )

Keep Jussi (for now) and trade Joni for Staal

I don’t know the team’s intention but Joni Pitkanen is coming up on unrestricted free agency and he is making $4 million a year. Now that Corvo is back for the next two years, the chances of Pitkanen being retained long term with the offensive defensive-men in the system is slim.

Exchanging Pitkanen for Marc Staal would be cap neutral and Rutherford would be getting the Gritty type of Defender he says the team needs.

That would mean Top 4:
Corvo and Glesson
Babchuck and Staal

last pair two kids:
Jamie McBain, Jay Harrison (according to team’s depth chart), Bobby Sanguinetti,

By the end of the year the Canes want to be able to move one of the young guys to a top 4 (Jamie McBain). By the end of next season when Corvo deal is up the team wants to be able to have Sanguinetti ready for top four as well.

Having Gleason and Staal in place would allow for a smooth transition in getting the young offensive d-men up to speed.

If the Hurricanes are not going to sign Pitkanen long term they should consider moving him for a chip like Marc Staal. It is not just the pedigree but his game fits the Hurricanes needs a lot better going forward when you consider the kids in the system.

Hmmm, a Staal for Pitkanen trade sounds intriguing would have my support. We already have 4 offensive defensemen (Pitkanen, Corvo, Babchuk, McBain), so why not trade one of them for a much-needed defensive defenseman in Staal? We only have one defensive blueliner right now and that’s Gleason, so he needs help. Marc Staal would fill a big hole on our back side.

I’m more or less against a Pitkanen trade right now unless we could get a fine D-man in return, and Staal would be just that. I’d approve of that trade for sure.

dscot399, your post makes a lot of sense to me… good post!

Keep dreaming——-I don’t think JR has plans to trade Pitkanen. Don’t forget, a good number of Jussi’s goals came from Joni’s feeds. I would hate to tamper with the Finn chemistry.

Now trading Babs——well that is a whole other topic !!!

Wouldn't somebody have to want him first?

I've still yet to see anybody explain why adding a mid-tier FA defenseman would suddenly add "many more ST's sold"
