this looks like retirement, not buyout,
why would brindy announce a buy out.

i wonder if he is mad?

the timing is wierd…brindy presser followed by JR presser.
seems like brindy retires and Jr puts him in the box on the coaching staff

by chrisj on Jun 30, 2010 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

Could be either or. The fact that JR is out of town and holding his own PC at 3:30 makes me wonder some. But just could be that he could not be here.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 30, 2010 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

it sounds like cory

that JR already knows and knew say in the last day or 2 and they may have been woring out all the “little” details ( or not so little) and seeing JR had to be out of town and etc…thus worked out the way it has & did

He could be explaining his decision to play next season followed by JR explaining why he didn’t buy Brindy out and why it was the right decision for both parties. Or…, it could be Brindy announcing his retirement followed by JR announcing hist hiring of Brindy to the front office. I still think it could go either way.

Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.

can someone put up the link for the press conference, where to go at 230?

by chrisj on Jun 30, 2010 11:30 AM EDT reply actions

I’m guessing retirement announcement, and Brind’Amour being hired to the organization. I’m really crossing my fingers for him to be the new conditioning coach – or help with player conditioning. I still blame the current conditioning coach for all the injuries that occurred over the past couple years.

Hopefully the 'Canes re-sign Ray Whitney to a nice 2 year deal and he retires comfortably at age 40. Maybe even 1 more Stanley Cup? :)

i thought it was brindy’s fault for pushing the playrs above and beyond… jk
dont we already have a great conditioning coach?

I don’t think so. Personally I agree with thebl4ckd0g. Pete is a good guy, but I think there is room for improvement.

No, he’s not entitled to the buyout if he retires. Which is why if he is retiring, there is probably also a plan in place to somehow keep him “whole” to remain with the organization.

Not necessarily to the 2010-11 budget, perhaps over time. But yes, it would be in our budget, just not in the player salary budget category.

don't think i'm phrasing my question correctly

JR said we can only spend 43mil.
One of the ways people mentioned saving money toward the 43mil was to buyout Rod so that we would only spend the buyout amount not the whole salary.
So, does this mean his retirement saves us his whole salary amount in that 43mil?

I know we will pay him from a different pot if he’s a coach, but that’s not in the 43mil…

by chrisbrasfield on Jun 30, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

If he retires, he’s due no money. So yes, $3M would be added to the “can spend” ledger.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 30, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Would be a very good case scenario if that happened. The Cap hit is meaningless but the $3 million could help (unless of course they are judging their “budget” based on Cap hit instead of actual player salary).

A little wiggle room for a Bobby Ryan offer sheet perhaps… It is nice in dream world.

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe this to be the payment terms.

If he retires the organization owes him nothing.

If the organization buys him out they will owe him $1m in 10-11 and $1m in 11-12.

It he stays and plays they will owe him $3m in 10-11.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, retirement means NO player salary money comes his way, only perhaps management money.

His cap hit of $3.5M will apply, since he was 36 when the contract was re-negotiated and extended.

But, that’s moot (and actually helpful) for a salary cap floor budget team.

by Elsker on Jun 30, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

In that case

If he retires, what a classy move. He knows he could get more money being bought out, but he’s taking one for the team.
Regardless of what you think of his play, gotta give him props for helping the team out (if he is retiring)

by chrisbrasfield on Jun 30, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s why I believe the organization will do something to try to keep him whole on the situation, especially if they encouraged him to do it.

by ECUCanesFan on Jun 30, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Hey off topic here, but there doesnt seem to be a thread for “free agent/trade speculation”. But I know that the Picard/Carson/M. Staal topic has been kinda running around on a lot of different threads so I figured I post it here. I was looking over Puck Daddys list of “Top 10 UFA DMen you’d want on your team”. What does everyone think about the chances of us trying to sign this guy……..

5. Zbynek Michalek(notes) (2009-10 Cap Hit: $1.25 million)

The Phoenix Coyotes are desperate to re-sign him, and for good reason, as Chris Botta of FanHouse pointed out:

The Czech Republic native is a pure stay-at-home defenseman. Perhaps his game has developed so strongly over the years because Michalek knows what he is. A minus-22 over his six-year career (he played his rookie season in Minnesota), Michalek was plus-5 in 2009-10. An excellent shot-blocker who is sound positionally, Michalek can be part of a team’s top pair of shut-down defensemen. Although he has just 27 career goals, he can play the point on a second-unit power play.

His price won’t be anywhere near what Martin or Hamhuis will make, because his offense just isn’t there. But he’s a rock on ‘D’ who led the Coyotes in average ice time (22:38). He’ll also just be 28 this December.

by TylerA7707 on Jun 30, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

He’d be a good pick-up. But I wonder if Martin’s injuries last year might bring his price down a little?

by CoastalCane on Jun 30, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Michalek will be cashing in big time. He deserves more than Marin, IMO.

by Cory Lavalette on Jun 30, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t imagine a press conference being held for a reason other than retirement. It would be unusual for a player to announce he is heading elsewhere.

by CoastalCane on Jun 30, 2010 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

I also can imagine Brind’Amour explaining that he wants to play another year but understands why the Hurricanes need to waive him. I still think it feels more like retirement if I had to guess; but logically it could be easily be waiver/buyout.

by abramsdoug on Jun 30, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

A third possibility is that Brindy doesn’t retire, JR doesn’t buy out his contract and Brindy spends one more year on the Canes roster.

I think the retirement possibility is the more likely reason for the press conferences, but I could see why they’d hold press conferences even if the decision was to have Brindy complete the final year of his contract with the Canes given all the debate amongst the fans.

I really shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but I shall anyway LOL. I can’t imagine he’s holding a press conference to say he’s being waived/bought out and testing free agency.

I’ve recently contended that the organization would somehow “make him whole” on the money he’d be walking away from by retiring. But I’ve thought it would be organization-driven and not necessarily Brindy-driven. But now thinking about it more, even though he’s previously stated publicly that he intends to continue to play out his contract (after all, what else would one expect him to say), I also am now believing he may have been more on board with this notion than I might assume.

Again, assuming the press conference is what I think it’s about. If it’s something completely different I admit in advance this isn’t the first time I’ve been fooled to the extreme.

JR has already said he’d be offered a position within the organization. Perhaps they’ve already budgeted for that elsewhere on their books.

Different pot of money and considerably less.

PK only has to pony up for a six-figure paycheck and benefits vs. a seven-figure buyout/paycheck.

Brind’Amour takes the stream of payments over time instead of the lump sum one-year or two-year payout, plus stays involved with hockey and the org.

It’s definitely a win-win solution, if Rod can turn loose of the hockey stick.

From Bob McKenzie…

Rod Brind’Amour can’t be put on waivers for buyout purposes because he has a NMC and his full $3 million will count against CAR’s cap.

But CAR will buy him out, he will retire and he and the Canes are working on a job description for something off-ice.

Yeah… Doesn’t it sound kind of confusing? It seems as ALL of this transpired just today. What would JR have to say in his own press conference about when Rod himself said he wasn’t even ready for his own retirement conference?

Maybe just come out and say he bought out Rod and that’s it? Seems fishy to me. Maybe something else is happening, another buyout or something.

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the decision buy him out was made well before today and JR was hoping Brindy would choose to retire first. That didn’t happen so JR forced his hand this morning, but did so in a way that they both make a sacrifice and they both still have an upside.

Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.

Still seems like JR would hold the press conference first, announce the buy-out, and then have Rod do his press conference saying goodbye. I just think it would be weird to have JR come out and hold his own press conference solely to talk about Brind’Amour’s retirement after the fact.

I hope the organization retires his number, no one else should be allowed to wear it on our team.

I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen. Look for one of the Philly games this year. Nov 11 or Feb 18.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no doubt that happens.

agreed!

From his years of service and play for the team, up to and including him retiring. He could have fought this and may have wanted to, but it shows the big character for him to choose the route which is probably for the best for ALL parties involved, and not the route that at least up front would have been more lucrative (playing his last year or forcing a buyout.)

So let the retire his number campaign begin, we already have at least two votes for it! :)

JR Press conference

Is this one going to be streamed online? There’s now no mention of it.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

That’s what I was looking for, but since he is out of town it probably will not be streamed.

Is it October yet?

Per Puckdrops
Canes bought out Brind’Amour. Not a straight retirement. Not planning to use savings in free agency, but you never know.

I still won’t be surprised if they spend over the self-imposed budget

Too bad… Any news coming from the JR press conference or is that it?

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I stand corrected. Good for him, he deserves to be paid.

That sucks...

I thought it was a straight retirement. There was no mention of the buyout during the interview I heard… :(

Hopefully the 'Canes re-sign Ray Whitney to a nice 2 year deal and he retires comfortably at age 40. Maybe even 1 more Stanley Cup? :)

Could be why they did separate interviews. Let Rod retire and then let JR come in and talk about the money.

Is the JR one anywhere? I couldn’t’ find it on wralsportsfan or the canes site yet…

Don’t think so. Think it was media only.

Ahh ok.

Hope there is some mention of it somewhere or maybe in the multitude of interviews coming up with Rod. I’m mad b/c I have a meeting during the one on 99.9 FM the Fan. :(

Interesting that JR said in a recent interview that Whitney’s offer would stay on the table but that may change based on other moves they are trying to make and spots they are trying to fill.

I still really hope they address the D situation. It was looking a little better but the letting go of Carson just boggles my mind. If they don’t have something else in mind and really expect Harrison to be on full time top-6 duty I would be extremely let down.

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Pothier?

They could sign him to a deal…I honestly thought he did an awesome job.

I’m just still dreading the Babchuk situation. I really really hope we get rid of him some way.

Trade deadline. Could also be after the big names are signed (call it July 8).

I don’t know that Carson is gone. He’ll check the market, but I could see him return.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I, too, hope Carson will re-sign. He is solid and has excellent hands. Still the situation seems somewhat odd to me.

by abramsdoug on Jun 30, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

We had his Restricted rights… I think if the Canes really wanted to keep him they would have just tended him a QO.

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems odd to me to let Carson go unless Jim Rutherford felt great about having some other player who he was confident would be available. Perhaps he has been told Pothier or Corvo would consider salaries he felt were in line. Something is up beyond being concerned about arbitration. Neither Picard nor Carson would likely ring the bell in an arbitration. Peters has the right to arbitrate and he was signed.

by abramsdoug on Jun 30, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t imagine it’s Pothier. If there was a desire to sign him and an agreement on length and amount he would be signed. Corvo is a possibility, but that’s an awful lot of offensive defensemen, when you think Joni (who has gotten more all around), McBain, Babchuk, and Sanguinetti.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

C-Leaguer, all great points. I am just trying to figure out what is going on because signing Carson seemed like a no-brainer. Maybe Carson will test the waters and then re-sign with Canes. Corvo has done well defensively, I thought. I probably would prefer a younger, bigger defenseman than Corvo.

by abramsdoug on Jun 30, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I think on the Carson front it’s as simple as not wanting to have an arbitrator tell them what to pay Carson. The salary structure is going to be very important over the next couple years if they keep the salary close to the floor. You can’t give a couple hundred thousand to a third pair guy and not expect that to impact other salaries down the line.

It’s possible that the Canes could go:

Gleason – Pitkanen
Harrison – McBain
Babchuk – Sanguinetti

I hope they don’t, but they could. Given the desired salary range, I wouldn’t be shocked if they did.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jun 30, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Harrison in an NHL top-4? Are you serious?

We would have the #1 or #2 Overall pick next year for sure.

by JussiJuice on Jun 30, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think Harrison is a top-4, just saying the Canes could go that way if they’re serious about this budget. I would hope they don’t. I personally think saying Harrison has hands of stone is an insult to people with stone hands.

I just wish JR would have given up Ray Whitney for Lent.

by C-Leaguer on Jul 1, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah...

no offense but those are bad pairings.

Gleason-McBain
Pitkanen-Babchuckles
Spaghetti-Harrison

are much more likely

**Maybe a Marc Stall in the mix ;) ?

Harrison and Defense Pairings

I really like Sanguinetti; but I just don’t know about Harrison as a #6 defenseman. Maybe he will be vastly improved this season; however, I still would prefer Carson. I would vastly prefer Marc Staal, of course.

by abramsdoug on Jun 30, 2010 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I was just going on guys we are guaranteed to have on roster next year. Obviously Carson would be much preferred over Harrison. and Staal would be a welcome adition as well.

by Clemson Caniac on Jun 30, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Pitkanen – Staal
Gleason – McBain
Babchuk – Sanguinetti

Sounds like a pretty good top-6 to me.
