What might go down today...
the stock market. It’s definitely going down today.
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
After trading Meszaros I’m guessing the Bolts will do something big… An offer on Kovalchuk maybe?
Probably more likely they will bring in a goalie like Nabokov. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see Ray Whitney end up in Tampa either.

When Philly traded for Mesjaroz (sp?), I thought that meant the end for Coburn. I guess not. How is it that Philly can afford 5 defenseman, all over $3M per season and we can’t afford to keep Carson because arbitration might award him ALMOST a million?

this would be HUGE for BOS, IMO:
@TSNBobMcKenzie: Savard to CGY for Regher is a serious consideration for both teams, but Savard has not yet been asked to waive NTC by BOS. Stay tuned.
Volchenkov, Coburn re-signing makes me think Timonen or Carle could be moved. Timonen costs too much for anyone to take on, I’m thinking. Carle to … ?

I’m not a big Babs fan, but at least the Canes did something today. I still think the Harrison signing was/is a mistake and it was all about JR making his boy Mo happy; and I really dislike Mo.

You realize the Canes could have had Carson locked down if they wanted to right? They willingly let him go search for a better contract, I don’t think they are that high on him.
Carson has a two-way contract in hand if he want’s to sign it. He’s going shopping, maybe somebody else picks him up….maybe not….but as crowded as our defense is right now AND with the need for one more solid stay at home guy….I think that there’s movement in the future and Carson’s return is logical….besides, it wasn’t as if Carson wasn’t offered a deal….just not the deal he thought he deserved….the market may or may not tell him otherwise….we shall see.
I’m pretty sure they offered him a low-ball one way…. one year.
Twitter @HMof2
by Carolyn Christians on Jul 1, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, this. He had a “take-it-or-leave-it” one-way offer tendered his way, not a two-way qualifying offer which could have been taken to arbitration. However, I believe the money behind that offer is being actively shopped.
Any next moves would be up to Carson, and I’m personally hoping JR will indeed take both salaries budgeted for Picard and Carson and see what’s out there to be had.
If they’re keeping it at $44.5M there is no money. I’m assuming some of the Picard/Carson money goes to Sanguinetti at $765,000

They’ve had this deal in the works for quite some time. I’m thinking it’s already been budgeted for.

Budget numbers
My numbers show current salary, with Kaberle and Brind`Amour buyouts, at $43.7 Mil.
We still need a 7th D and Peters (or a backup goalie). Gotta be $1.2 mil minimum even if it’s Borer + Peters?
That’s $45Mil.
For forwards, I’m using Boychuk, Dalpe and Bowman as the 2-way players making the cut, allowing 13 forwards.
Twitter @HMof2
by Carolyn Christians on Jul 1, 2010 12:59 PM EDT reply actions
Or they go with only 13+ 6 + 2 for 21 on the roster. Seems light, but that’s how they started last year IIRC, and may work with Charlotte so close.
Either way: $43.7 Mil for 20 players with only one goalie and 6 D, as of now. Also not sure which of the 2-way forwards would count.

To be fair I’d rather have him aiming for the corners and posts rather than right into the middle of the goalies chest (Seemingly the Canes favorite target). This could be a very good reason Babchuk had the 2nd highest shooting % among all D in the NHL during his last year with the Canes (like 12.2% or something ridiculous).
Well, that and it’s only a shot if it hits the net. So many of his were off-target or blocked. But he’s lethal when it’s on the money.

Oh, I wasn’t necessarily thinking “scouting budget”, more just “management budget”, the larger envelope.
I think our “player development” guys are beginning to pick up some of the scouting department’s duties (“let’s put some eyes on him”) anyway, plus there’s a LOT more video available these days to help winnow down the search for talent.
Also, team brings back Sheldon Ferguson, former director of amateur scouting and head draft guy, in a scouting role. Three others not renewed: Greg Stefan, Phil Horner and Mario Marois. Rough month for Marois, who had a plane crash in his yard a little while back. Four killed, IIRC, but none of his family — all on the plane.
Likely, but signed for less than gonchar was being offered so maybe.

At this point we should probably just let things play out, take our top-5 Draft pick (And not screw things up at the end of the damn year if we are locked into a top-2 spot), and hope some magic waterfall of money will cascade down onto the Canes so we can afford to have a good year the next season.
subbing for Paladin?
that’s not a very reasonable assertion at this point!! we certainly could do w/o negativity…
Some would call it reality. I think at this point in time with the lack of moves the Canes have made and with the lack of moves they are likely to make and with the official exodus of Ray Whitney I don’t think it’s out of the question to assume the Canes finish next season where they finished this season. Remember too, that if they lost one game to Florida that they won they would have been drafting #3 instead of#7.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
So What's the Worst that can Happen?
I suppose before every season, the possibility of a meltdown exists for all NHL teams. Before 2009-2010, the Hurricanes spent almost to the salary cap and seemed on paper to be a top 6 team. Accordingly, the worst that can happen is another year like 2009-2010 where the Hurricane wind up in the race for a first round pick #3 through #10.
Chicago and Pittsburgh built their team from the draft. If the worst scenario predicted by the least optimistic people at CC comes to fruition, the Hurricanes will select some fantastic young prospects. Anybody following the Hurricanes realizes the Hurricanes organization has the largest collection of young talent it has ever had in the team’s existence.
I, for one, am very skeptical that the same young team that beat some of the best teams in the NHL will falter as badly as you suggest; but even if you are right, I will take the long view and be happy with the chance to load up on talent. On the other hand, what I expect to happen is that the Staal, Ruutu, Sutter, Jokinen, Boychuk, Tlusty, Dwyer, LaRose, Cole, Samsonov, Kostopoulos, and Dalpe will be a formidable group of forwards and will provide much more offense than the team had in 2009-2010. I think Gleason, Pitkanen, McBain, Sanguinetti, and Babchuk will combine with some newly acquired Dman or Carson to form a defensive corp that is steady and at times brilliant. I think Cam Ward is going to return to being an elite goalie. I think the Caniacs will rock the RBC and we will see some great games; and we’ll see the young kids be outstanding much of the time; with moments where their inexperience causes them to make mistakes. It’s going to be an exciting year; and I am convinced the Hurricanes make the playoffs.
I am thrilled with the talent of the team; and with the talent in the system. Ironically, the more pessimists conjure up the prospect of catastrophe, the more excited I am about the team.
I feel very much the same way. The Canes did a heck of a job for most of the second half of last season and did so with a lot of young talent. I think there were some young guys who came up and played more games sooner than the organization planned. This could have hurt their development had the Canes kept on losing. But instead, the Canes started winning more games and so I think the experience these youngsters gained last season may have propelled them forward in their development in a very positive way.
Does that mean we’ll be a great team next season? No, certainly not. But I think the team will surprise us this year and play a steadier season in the W/L area and finish at least as well as last season, maybe even make the playoffs, although given the changes in the Southeast Division I am a little less optimistic on the playoffs than you.
I think we’ll see some exciting hockey this season, even if there are some frustrating times mixed in here and there. I see a lot of potential with this team and think relocating the AHL affiliate to Charlotte is going to be a huge help in the seasons to come. If I can make it through 19+ years of the Hartford Whalers, I think I can be a little patient with this organization and stomach a year or two of rebuilding. I think the team has a far greater chance of a successful rebuild than it ever did in Hartford. I am actually excited to see what kind of team Rutherford puts together over the next two years after the dust settles from the sale of the minority stake.
Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.
I’m not denying that the future is bright. I’ve said that before. However, I’m realistic about next season. Ray is gone, so who is going to help Staal? If there is no one capable of doing it consistently will the team look similar to the early part of the year when Staal’s injury kept him limited? I think it’s possible that without Ray the defense will be able to key on Staal that much more and bring his play down to a similar level.
Jussi had a career year last year. Can he repeat that? His past performance would seem to indicate he’s more of a 15-20 goal guy as opposed to a 30 goal guy.
There will be a number of rookies on this team playing minutes and roles that are meaningful to the team. That wasn’t the case last year. Last year when the kids came up they weren’t asked to do too much. How will they respond when they have to play with expectations? Go_shelf and I have had some discussions about this in the past, but I think it’s easier to play when there is little expected from you. If you don’t have to worry about the negative then there is a lot of weight taken off your shoulders.
The defense this year will be Gleason, Pitkanen, McBain, Babchuk, Harrison, Sanguinetti and maybe Carson with Borer and Rodney as a depth guys. Does that sound more solid than last years group that had Corvo or Pothier during the season? It doesn’t to me.
When I look at what has happened so far I see the team scoring fewer goals next season and giving up more. I also think with the rookies it’s more likely that the goals will be less evenly distributed. There will be more nights on the extremes this season (i.e. lopsided 5-1 games in either direction) and fewer tight games.
I still feel good about the future. I think Skinner will be a good forward. I think he can be effective with Staal. I think Dalpe can be a solid third line center and hopefully a top six winger. I think there is some D in the system that can be solid at the NHL level, although they are a ways off and will need to be augmented with some signings/acquisitions in the near term. None of that will help next year though other than perhaps Skinner, who could very well be better served playing in juniors next season and working on some of the finer points of his game while not burning a year of service.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
My thoughts on your questions
Here’s how I think about your questions:
1. Who is on the first line to help Staal?
Whitney is really not a classic first line even strength wing. His defense is suspect; and he has quickness but not speed. He has amazing vision on the ice; but he slumped significantly after the trade deadline. In 2010-2011, I think the first line is going to be very fluid, other than Staal. Some of the first line combinations will include:
Jokinen/Staal/Ruutu
Jokinen/Staal/Cole
Ruutu/Staal/Cole
LaRose/Staal/Ruutu
LaRose/Staal/Cole
Ruutu/Staal/Cole
Boychuk/Staal/Ruutu
Boychuk/Staal/Jokinen
Boychuk/Staal/Cole
2. How will the young players respond to more time on the ice?
Boychuk, Tlustly, Dalpe, and Bowman have a history of responding to pressure. Boychuk, Tlusty, and Bowman all did quite well in their NHL time with the Hurricanes. Dalpe is a special player and his debut in the AHL was really excellent. I expect the Checkers to bring their game to the NHL and to respond to the challenge. Winning is in their DNA. I also think Sutter will respond to the increased responsibility with another tremendous season. I doubt many teams would rather their own forward prospects than the Hurricanes.
3. Jokinen: Jokinen did have a career year, but in large part he was playing in the regular season the way he played during the 2008-2009 playoffs. Jokinen also saw his minutes increase and got time with Staal and Sutter. I think Jokinen will begin the year the way he left it.
4. The Defense in 2010-2011:
The defense did not slack off when Corvo was injured with the severe slash of his Achilles tendon. I much prefer this defense to the A.Ward, Wallin debacle. Jim Rutherford has said he is actively looking for a defenseman. I prefer McBain to Alberts. I like Sanginetti. Harrison is Harrison, so that is not changed except he is a year wiser and perhaps healthier. Babchuk brings back a scoring threat on the power play. If for example Jim Rutherford were to re-sign Corvo and Carson, it would be the best defensive group I’ve seen for the Canes.
5. Goal Scoring:
I much prefer the young prospects as goal scorers to Cullen as a pure goal scorer. The second half of the season, Whitney’s slump reduced significantly the goals he normally would be expected to score – and although he is likely to break out of the slump in 2010-2011, nonetheless in a yearly comparison of goal scoring, Boychuk, Dalpe, and Bowman are natural goal scorers. Ruutu missed time with his injuries. LaRose missed time with his injuries. Staal missed games and played injured much of the season. Does anybody really contend Walker was a huge offensive threat?
6. Nights of Extremes:
I agree. Odds are there will some nights were the magic doesn’t work. In my mind, that is the time that the Caniac Nation needs to bolster the team and get them back on track the next game. The kids have a ton of resiliency; and Ruutu, Staal, Sutter, Jokinen, LaRose, and Kostopoulos have virtually endless character.
Whitney not a first liner? Wallin debacle? Babchuk [a downgrade from Corvo] brings back a scoring threat? Best defensive group I’ve seen [if Corvo and Carson are signed]?

Avery’s one of the best if not the best at what he does. Its not like hes constantly suspended for cheap shots. He’s probably the sole reason Kovalchuk will not get what he wants. Avery got in his head those few years ago, shut him down, and the Rangers swept the Thrashers in the first round. Kovy even fought him. From that series on Kovy’s lack of playoff production is keeping him from his big payday. Its the lockerroom chemistry that’d be the ONLY reason I wouldnt want Avery on this team. Hes better than LaRose, more of an agitator than LaRose, and probably makes the same, give or take a little. If Im not mistaken didnt the Rangers absolutely own the Devils a year ago? Something like 7-0-1 for the season series? Yea, thats probably all Avery.
Whether or you think he’s a good player or not, as a team who’s trying to grow hockey in the area, he goes very much against the whole “character” focus we’ve had player-wise.

Ray got mostly what he wanted. 3mil per, a good place for golf, and a city with reasonable expectations for what he will produce on the ice (unlike a major market ie: Montreal, Edmonton, Pittsburgh). I think this sigining along with last years trade deadline debacle shows that Ray is not that worried about winning another cup. If he was, he would have took a discount to play in Pittsburgh or another true contender.
Phoenix isn’t terrible. They have some good young players and veterans. Losing Mychalek will hurt. If they lose Lombardi as well the team could easily take a step back next season though. Now that the City of Glendale is covering losses the Ice Edge group needs to get Lombardi signed. Something like 5 years at 4.5 should do it.

but there are mid aged players that have learned a lot from rod and ray and glen etc
like staal, gleason, jokinen
We could be a pretty good team 2 seasons from now if we just take this year as a rebuilding year and get another top-5 pick. Maybe then management wouldn’t spend to the Cap floor because they won’t have the ASG to sell thousands of Season Tickets. There is always that.
Totally agree. The future isn’t abysmal. But the rookies on the team this year need some veterans to buffer them to help them progress IMO.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
I think we might could be a competitive team next year with a lot of young guys similar to what the Avs did last year.
Next year 2010-11 or 2011-12? 2011-12 I would but, but not 2010-11. Personally I think Skinner will be with his junior team this season, which will reduce some of the impact the rookies will have. I’m okay with that. It’s possible the Canes could be drafting high enough in the next draft to get a kid that is NHL ready.

Sutter will be the next big trade maybe this year at deadline before he is due another contract. I really don’t see Sutter hanging around Carolina very long.
Carolina Hurricanes! Your 2011 Stanley Cup Champions!
Sutter and Carolina
I have a very different view. I think Sutter, like Staal, will retire at Carolina. I also don’t understand all the negativity about the team. The season is 90 days away. The Hurricanes have very talented players. Yes, they need another defenseman; but today was the first day in which UFAs became available. If CC were a team, I would think some people gave up during warm ups when they saw the other team come onto the ice.
The season is only 96 days away – best news I’ve heard today. Let’s see, that mean about 76 days give or take for pre-season games..
So a little over 2 months for the new season to start taking shape.
I think I can make it. :0)
"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."
I mostly agree with Doug here about Sutter. I don’t know that Sutter will retire a Cane. His father and uncle are a coach and GM so he could have a family desire to play with them at some point. That said, the Canes will keep him at least through his restricted years and likely well in to his unrestricted years.

Which he had. He can’t trade Ray for nothing. If he does that then he’s never taken seriously by another GM. Once he agreed to a deal the market was set. If no one else paid as much he couldn’t simply move him to move him. If he does that then he can never have the upper hand in a deal again.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
i had read that we were ready to trade him for a second when ray backed out becuase he couldn’t get the kings to resign him for three years. JR backed off that when he realized he wasn’t going to get a 1st.

Pierre McGuire just credited what the Thrashers have done, and what Carolina has done (?) for the Southeast being a much improved division this year. He said the SE along with the Central will be the two most improved divisions this year.
Draft. According to an earlier tweet from Marek:
Just pretaped an interview with Jeffrey Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes for tomorrow’s radio show. What a great pick by Carolina.

I think we had a good draft. But it’s a little early to see we improved the division. At least for this year.
If he is ready to tackle NHL play, then great. If not, please leave him in his own league. I’d hate to rush him out there and stunt any needed development.

I can understand “improved for the future”, but until October it’s going to be hard and judge how good the improvement is.

Has Ladd to ATL been confirmed yet? That would have been a face I would’ve liked to see back in Rad and Black…….way more than Babs.

How many years does #30 have left in him you think?

Not many. He’s not as effective as he used to be and with the yet reduced goalie pads I wonder if he’s going to stick around much longer.

babs isn’t a bad signing, just like you said though, need a physical guy. Still think we should have kept Andrew Alberts. that was a bad trade IMO.

I’m thinking Pits stays on the ice the whole game and we just rotate who his partner is. It might have a benefit! He would have played so much, no other team would want to sign him next year. We might could resign him for cheap.

Cullen to the Wild
Seems that Matt Cullen was just signed in Minnesota for 3 years at 10.5 million. Good to see him find a team.
Wow, I didn’t think Cullen could get that much. Good for him!

Doom and Gloom
is for the weak! Strap on your skates and check pessimism into the boards! Win that faceoff against demoralization and snap that wrister past the goalie of discouragement into the back of the net!!
Seriously, the Canes will be a solid team next year. We have a core of young players with skill and experience and a nice lineup of youngsters that will be burning to compete for an NHL spot. Staal is an All-Star center, and Jussi and Cam might be deserving as well. Olympians, medal winners. The cupboard is not bare.
Are the Canes a top 4 team in the EC? Hellz no. But they definitely have a shot at the playoffs, and MTL showed us (as well as the Canes in 08-09) the lightning in a bottle can be had once you reach the postseason.
Doom, meet my Ruutu jersey. Gloom, this is Timmy’s #6. Pessimism, come sit next to me and Mrs Gillimus and try not to get fired up for Sutter’s smarts, LaRose’s hustle, and McBain’s vision on the ice when the new season starts. We are Caniacs and we will not go quietly into that good night.

And they’re going to have gaps with their self-imposed budget. My optimism rests on the top 2 lines (Staal, Jussi, Ruutu, Sutter, and two Rats), the top D (Gleason, Pits, McBain), and Cam. This is a team that will challenge for the playoffs — maybe only the 7 or 8 seed, but they will be in the mix.
FWIW just about every team is in the mix for the 7 or 8 spot until well into the season with the 3-point games.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
I think most of us are saying essentially the same thing. Even with the self-imposed salary cap and the loss of Ray Whitney, the Hurricanes in 2010-2011 will challenge for a playoff spot. Once any team gets into the playoffs, it’s all about which team can weather the storm and which goalie can steal at least one or two games. Anything can happen in the “second season” once a team qualifies.
I guess I would be one of the people described as “doom and gloom.”. Its no so much about the moves the Canes have made this offseason, but more about the lack of moves made. I agree with AD, this is a young team missing a few pieces. Other than the Harrison signing and the potential non-signing of Carson; the other moves actually made are not bad. I just felt, based on the 2nd half of last season, the Canes were close to be a very good team. I was looking for them to get (through trade) a quality, experienced young forward and a defenseman that could play in our top 4. That is what lead to being so frustrated/negative. I understand rebuilding must happen at certain points; I just felt we were to close to do it right now. I apologize to everyone for my criticism of management. I will try not to offend anyone with negative views (except my unlike for our coach).

PackPride, we are all fans with tons of various opinions. We were all disappointed with last year’s outcome, and excited about how well the team played in the last few months. This team IS missing a few pieces; with the self-imposed salary cap they can’t help it. But there is also hope for a team that has a plethora of young players that want to succeed and a draft pick that puts the puck in the net and an elite goalie. Imagine if, during a year when PK slashes salaries to make the team attractive to a buyer, the Canes make another playoff run. Potential buyers will be ecstatic; ticket sales will increase, the general feeling about the team will be positive. There is a scenario where 10-11 is a good year for the Canes.
I will say that when Skinner’s name was announced, I was like WTF. After thinking about it, he really does offer some potential and could be a 1st liner. I think Staal, Skinner, Sutter, and Dalpe will be a very good 4 of 6 for the Canes for multiple years. I like Bowman will be a very solid 3rd liner. I’m not that high on Boychuk, but he should be a good player. I actually think he will eventually be traded to fill another need. I’m really not sure what happens to Jussi and Ruutu; but I like both of them very much. I think if we resign Jussi, he will probably be moved to the 3rd line center spot in 2012.
The defense is a little underwhelming. McBain and Gleason should make a great pair. And if we can resign Pitkanen (I hope we do); in a couple of years I think we might have a great partner for him in Dumoulin. The rest of the defense could be filled by cheap young players and rotated out as their contracts become too expensive.
The future is promising for the Canes, but like I said; I felt we were close. I thought the transition to a younger team was needed, but could have been done in a different way that would given us a better shot this upcoming season as well as the future. Again, I apologize if my posts gave anybody “negative feelings.”. I try not to be over the top, but sometimes passion gets in the way of judgement.

The Young Forwards
It will be interesting to see how the young forwards progress. I realize PackPride17 is not sold on Boychuk. I happen not to agree with the way he manages the team as GM (LOL), but he obviously thinks I am the Burke and Sather of amateur wanna be GMs. I think the Hurricanes are very, very fortunate to have the large amount of talent at forward. I see the choices for who stays very differently. As GM of my little fantasy world, I am getting ready to trade Samsonov, Kostopoulos, and LaRose at the trade deadline; and unless Cole revives his offense, I am trading him as well. I am going for as many young, vibrant, aggressive, and talented forwards as I can. Staal, Sutter, Ruutu, and Jokinen are Canes Lifers in my world. I am already planning decades from now the retirement of their jerseys. I am also trying to give Bowman, Tlusty, and Osala full chances to show their true abilities. I disregard past stereotypes for lines and run my 12 talented forwards in various lines to get the matchups I want; and to keep all of the forwards both rested and motivated.
AD, you are correct that we don’t see eye-to-eye as armchair GM’s. :)
I do believe that Samsonov should be jettisoned whatever way is possible. He doesn’t really fit any line, make too much money, and takes a roster spot for one of the kids. I also think if the team is going younger, either LaRose or TK could be let go. I would prefer keeping Chad over TK, but that is more about personal feelings. The difference between you and me is that I would try to bring in a young, proven guy than completely counted on the kids. History has shown that not all prospects will work out, so I think its dangerous expecting all of them to turn into true NHLers.
And like you said, I believe in line roles; not just putting out the most talented. I think we need a real 1st line with 1st line talent and a two-way 2nd line that can defend opponents 1st. I think the 3rd line should have a quality “teacher” and young, developing players that can provide some secondary scoring. I feel the 4th line should be cheap players that kill penalties or serve a specific purpose. I like the idea of having a 4th line forward that could switch to defense if needed in-game. On defense; I think you need a top 4 and a 3rd pairing of young guys or cheap guys (but not Harrison, haha).
We definitely have differing opinions AD, but I enjoy debating you on subjects.

The Glass Half Full
As the professor emeritus of optimism, I look to the law of unintended consequences for comfort. As Gullimus has stated, the Hurricanes should be in the playoff mix. The Hurricanes can potentially fill their gaps from within. All it takes is for Boychuk, Tlusty, Dalpe, Skinner, Bowman or Osala to have a break out year.
Unlike some teams like Philadelphia that have their toes on the salary cap line, the Hurricanes have all the distance in the world for salary; and if the Hurricanes push for the playoffs, all bets are off with regard to the self-imposed salary budget. All it takes is for the new buyer to be a passionate believer in hockey and the self-imposed budget is erased.
Defensively, I took much solace in the fact that Jim Rutherford was talking to Corvo’s agent. In short, I am very excited about the Hurricanes in 2010-2011. It may not always be beautiful hockey, but I am convinced the 2010-2011 Canes will be wide open throttle for effort every game.
Agreed, things could look very different on the other side of the partnership sale, if we make it to the trade deadline with a good chance to make it into the playoffs.

Atlanta
I actually think, if Atlanta could somehow resign Kovalchuk, they would be a very good team. Their trade acquisitions and signings have really made them a solid lineup missing a top caliber player IMO.
Triple Gold Juice - It's Potent and Guaranteed to Help You Score!
by PackPride17 on Jul 1, 2010 8:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
ehh, you watch, Atlanta will suck next year. All they did was acquire mid level role players. I think every last one of ems production drops by about 10% next year. Those guys were a product of the system and the talent around them. Look at Buff. Hell I could collect a mere 30pts a year if I had guys like Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Campbell, and Keith surrounding me! I think the same will be the case with the Versteeg/Stahlberg trade with Toronto. Versteeg will probably step down a little, while Stahlberg will step up a little. Just saying, I wouldnt sweat Atlanta till we see how it works out on the ice.
You may very well be correct. I was just saying that they have put together a solid team minus an elite player. I want to beat them every time we play, but I don’t want any of the southern teams to sucks. I actually want the southern teams to be somewhat successful; just to stick it to all the northern and north of the border teams.

my rose-colored glasses still can't help me make wine out of all these sour grapes....
Two things regarding all the angst about Ray leaving:
1. Does anyone feel like it’s odd that there’s nothing on the Canes website about it this evening? Regardless of the hard feelings some folks have after the way this season ended, he was one of the team’s most consistent offensive producers over the last few seasons, even in hard times when the team seemed to take 3-month vacations before lacing up their skates after New Year’s, and….oh yeah, he did have an A on his jersey.
2. Did we ever really find out what our dance partner out west wanted? Ray had his priorities, and JR had a wishlist, but LA wanted something out of it all too. It’s not that it didn’t have anything to do with Ray and JR, but it goes beyond that. Did LA ever really come clean about what their position was, or is the talk on most of this hearsay, innuendo, speculation, and/or wishful thinking?
I’ll step back and watch the people who were paying attention to all this when it went down beat the dead horse again.
And if the goal is the Draft 2011
From NHL.com
Western Hockey League — WHL scout B.J. MacDonald is keeping a close eye on two players. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels had 24 goals, 65 points and 28 penalty minutes in 67 games this season.
“If he progresses the way he’s been at an early age, he’s going to be a special player,” MacDonald said. “At 16 he was almost a take-charge guy already. He’s one of those players with radar — he sees the play forming and can see guys behind him and beside him. If they pair him with a guy who can finish, then it could be a good combination.”
MacDonald also is high on Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray, who had 5 goals, 27 points, 31 penalty minutes and a plus-33 rating in 52 games. Murray also scored 2 goals and 7 points in 6 playoff games.
“He’s playing in their top-four right now as a 16-year-old,” MacDonald said. “Even now, he’s showing signs of great poise and maturity.”
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League — It’s possible the 2011 Draft will be the year of the “Q.” League scout Chris Bordeleau was all smiles when discussing next year’s crop, which includes four players from the Saint John Sea Dogs and high-profile sniper Sean Couturier of the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Couturier had for 41 goals (10 on the power play), 96 points, and finished with a plus-62 rating and 262 shots on goal in 68 regular-season games. He then capped it with 3 goals, 7 points and a plus-9 rating in four playoff games.
Forget a defensemen. If JR passed over Fowler I don’t see him going defensemen in the draft under just about any circumstances. Only way I can see it is if Skinner and another forward not named Sutter turns in to an all-star and a very very very very very very very very very highly rated D falls in to their laps. It’s clear his plan is not to develop D from the draft through to the NHL.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
Agree. JR will not pick any Dman in the first round of a draft
I think JR has now formulated a plan in his own mind never again to spend a first round draft choice on a dman. I happen to agree with that principle solely because history has shown it is almost impossible to figure out which talented 18 year old dman prospect will become a game changer on defense. The odds are against the GM being right. Also, any GM can use money to buy a young, seasoned dman.
My goal for the 2011 draft is to use the first round pick and any second round picks to pick the biggest, baddest, fastest forwards available. Somebody has to be able to bang bodies with Big Buff, Jordan Staal, Ryan Malone, and the other beasts of the crease.
Doug, got any facts that support the odds being against the GM? Or the odds of a forward panning out are higher than a defensemen?
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
Yes the odds are found in taking the first round draft choices for the last five years and comparing which first round draft choice forwards were successful in the NHL two years or less after being drafted and which first round draft choice defensemen were successful in the NHL two years or less after being drafted.
All the GMs and organizations have professional actuarial and statistics firms crunching those numbers. I haven’t been shown the regression analysis and understand it is highly proprietary. I’ve done a very, very rough mental regression analysis by looking at the past five years and the pattern is indisputable. Forwards picked in the first round hit the NHL with more impact earlier than defensemen taken in the first round.
Five years is not long enough to make a conclusion. Defensive players take longer to develop. If you look at only the last five years you’re skewing things towards offense. And for facts, you’re awful light on numbers.
Is it possible to be addicted to hockey?
That makes no sense to me. If the premise is that forwards develop sooner, then more forwards would be in the NHL than defensemen if the premise is accurate. I would respectfully suggest that you could as easily as me crunch the actual numbers over the past five years. Any time period should and will show the same thing because I doubt you can point me to any single year in which the defensemen drafted in the first round made an NHL impact in larger numbers than the forwards taken in that year.
Even more importantly, compare the number of first round forwards who are still with their drafting team versus the defensemen still with their drafting team. You can pick any time frame, you can pick any analytical subset you choose, such as top ten teams, bottom ten teams, mid level teams between 10 and 40. The answer is the same. However, if you can create any subset that reaches a different result statistically, I along with many other fans, would appreciate the information.
I think times have changed...
The drafted guys are making it to the NHL faster than ever. I think JR made a huge mistake in not drafting a DMan in this past draft when those two monsters were there.

…biggest, baddest, fastest forwards…
Just out of curiosity, who among the 18-year-old kids in the 2010 draft fit this description?
Elsker, I don’t know if you are asking who did the Hurricanes pick who fit that description or who did I see in the 2010 draft class as fitting that description. If the question is who did the Hurricanes take who fit that description, the answer is nobody taken fit that description.
In the first round, my picks were taken by #7, Johansen and Niederreiter. I have no issue with the Hurricanes taking Skinner as a scoring forward; but my list of big, bad, forwards included in no particular order
1. Quinton Howden;
2. Brock Nelson;
3. Riley Sheahan;
4. Charlie Coyle;
5. Stephen Shipley;
6. Ivan Telegin;
7. Ludvig Rensfeldt;
8. Kevin Hayes;
9. Maxim Kitsyn;
10. Jakub Culek;
11. Ryan Martindale;
12. Mark Stone;
13. Dalton Smith;
14. Joe Basaraba;
15. Jonathan Johansson;
The bigger bodied power forwards almost always take somewhat longer to develop than the smaller forwards.
Sorry, I posted that on the way out the door, and meant it as a Reply.
Was trying to gain insight into the type of forward you’re envisioning, and you answered in spades.
Not going to chase down all those names, but I do recognize a couple from my pre-draft grazing (I really don’t research the prospects until AFTER we select them).
So, that helps. Thanks.
