Carolina Hurricanes number one draft pick, (seventh overall), Jeff Skinner is expected to participate in the upcoming Traverse City Tournament in Michigan.

The prospects of the Carolina Hurricanes will open the Traverse City Tournament at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, against the same franchise that the NHL team will open the regular season against in Finland, the Minnesota Wild.

The "junior" Canes won this tournament last season and will be considered among the favorites again this season.  Number one draft pick Jeff Skinner is expected to participate along with newly signed ex-Cornell star, Riley Nash.  The official roster has yet to be released by the Hurricanes.

The prospects will take on the New York Rangers on Sunday as Bobby Sanguinetti will most likely get to face some of his ex-teammates.  After an off day on Monday, the team will then face Columbus on Tuesday night.  Wednesday's games will be determined after all games have been completed on Tuesday as the teams with the top records will face each other for the championship.

The teams participating are:  Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, and the St. Louis Blues.

For more information, check out this link: Traverse City Tournament.  We will have more about the tournament as the information becomes available.

The Forgotten Factor...the shoulder

I am sure it has been mentioned in the past, but as I have perused the gang’s speculations and possible line combos that pine for Skinner, Dalpe, Boychuk, Bowman etc… we seem to forget about a couple of factors.

  1. Ruutu…namely his shoulder and the question of his ability to stay healthy and to recover from surgery. This may open a slot for the coveted youth.
  1. Kostopoulos…where does he fit and does he really sit on the 4th line? Maybe his presence is not so good for those hoping to break in.
  1. Samsonov….what are we doing with this guy? We all loved his resurgence, but were not impressed last season. Is he in the way of young talent?
  1. Cole…another health question. Face it…the guy has never been the same since he suffered the neck injury. Is his oft filled spot in the trainer’s room another chance for the up and coming talent?
  1. Dwyer and Tlusty…both on 1 way deals. Hmmm….

pertaining to 1. samsonov played low line minutes not of his own playing. he didnt play his way to 3rd and 4th line minutes, but he got them anyway, i think he will have a great year now that there is a little more space for him around the top 6ish

Dwyer is on a two-way contract.

ok

sorry…

I like ChrisJ’s thought of those 4th line types being motivated to work up. This could include Sammy, Dwyer, Kosto, and Tlusty.

I think this team needs a guy like Kostopoulos this year badly. A grinding veteran who will drop the gloves (albeit not too well), kill penalties, a good locker room guy and plays well on the defensive side of the ice. He was a +4 last year which was pretty darn good for this team last year.

Also, I think Tlusty will be a solid contributor for the team this year. He may not come right out of the gates ready to play top-6 minutes but given time I think he will show why he was drafted in the first round.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Still, it’s very reasonable to wonder which veterans will have to be moved in order to create space for the young prospects. Perhaps it won’t happen in 2010-2011, but even more changes are on the horizon. I also agree that Tlusty will be a good player for the Hurricanes. I’d like to see a player like Osala develop more of an edge because the best of all worlds would be a fourth line that is fast and physical but also highly skilled. Of course, no line stays intact for long, so having four lines that can roll will mean the lineups change game to game; and that gives the younger players the chance for more time on the ice.

It should be on the NHL Network. They haven’t announced anything yet to my knowledge, but that’d be my guess.

I think TSN only showed a couple games last year, and none of Carolina. Hopefully there will be more this year.

Probably so, as the returning champs.

Just to let everyone know, this was from the NHL twitter:

For those that have been inquiring, the Traverse tournament will not be on #NHL Network this summer.

I was just going to ask about that. What else does the NHL network have to cover in it’s place?

They’re doing a thing right now where they show all the Cup-clinching games from 1975-2010 each weekday.

I’m just saying, maybe LIVE hockey would…ya know…promote the future of the sport?

If they can show the juniors, they could show this. Easily.

Lame. I wonder when they’re going to get a clue and start carrying this.

Is anybody else going to video the games? It seems crazy for the NHL not to broadcast these games.

Rangers' roster for Traverse City

I assume McIlrath and McDonagh will be playing for the Rangers. That should challenge Sanguinetti.

When will the rosters be set?
