Incredibly long offseason

So, I bought NHL 09 for the Xbox back in the spring when it looked pretty certain that the Canes were going to miss the playoffs.  They have a feature called Be A Pro where you can create a player and play for your favorite team.  I am currently finishing the 2016-2017 season.  I won't bore you with the details, but the Canes have won every Cup since 09-10.

The current roster only has Staal and Pits from last year.  Weirdly enough, Kovalchuk has been on the team for 5 years. Ward was traded for Mike Green, and is now playing for the Sharks.  Gleason is playing for the Islanders.  Ovechkin is in Buffalo (more reason for hate).

I bring this up to ask -- what are you doing this offseason to get your hockey fix on?

LOL! Other than cruising fanboards, you mean?

I’ve got some classic Canes games that have been viewed on occasion throughout the summer. Watched all of the playoff action, of course, as long we as it lasted, even though we had no part in it (other than seeding ex-Canes among the contenders).

Otherwise, lots of reading about hockey and talking about hockey with elskling and my longtime STH seatmate, who I see every once in a while and do a lot of email/texts back and forth with that’s hockey-related.

The hunger is building. It is an incredibly long offseason, isn’t it?

To quote Cole: Losing sucks.

Here we are now...entertain us.

I’ve been playing NHL 10 for PS3 all offseason. My Be A Pro guy got drafted by Minnisota though…….LAME.

haha – there must be something about this week that we’ve all hit a low in getting our hockey fixes. It’s been particularly painful for me this week.

Like Elsker I’ve been reading the forums. Also follow multiple hockey journalists and Caniacs on Twitter. Checking my hockey related RSS feeds. Watching some Canes classic games this week.

I followed all the NHL playoff games, the River Rats while they lasted in the AHL playoffs, watched the IIHF World Cup games online. And while watching the FIFA World Cup games I pretended they were just hockey on grass (didn’t work so well) =)

I went to the Canes Draft party, the Fan Fest, heck even going to Select-a-Seat was hockey related enough to get me through that day! Made it out to Conditioning Camp 2 days to see the new prospects.

Every couple of days I bring out my Helsinki travel itinerary, study some more Finnish and think about what we want to see while there.

I’ve been trying to read the hockey books HMof2 has been posting about, but I get very little time for leisure reading, so it’s taking me a while.

Thankfully Canes Country has remained fairly active, that helps!

"The increase in pain is way beyond what you would expect a person to play with," said coach Paul Maurice. "Unfortunately it’s even beyond what Tim Gleason can play with, because he can play with just about anything."

Well, there’s this:

158 folders
58,066 files
463 GB

42 games
53 practices
10 special events

And that’s just the Data/My Pictures/Canes/2009-2010 Season folder to be cleaned up.

(for the record I’ve pared it down about 50GB so far…)

And when that isn’t keeping me busy, #WHIH fills up the rest of the time.

Only 51 days to training camp kids. Basically it’s early in the third period, with less than 18 minutes to go. Amazing that we’ve kept it going this long.

(Only 44 till Traverse City. Better yet: From what we’ve been hearing, Camp Brind`Amour will be starting up in just 4 weeks. It’s been more than that since the draft.)

I’m enjoying late evening walks to the park with my kids and dog to play catch. Or catch fireflies. And I’m reading a lot of good books, plus catching up on movies on TV. Between the Canes 82 games and my kids hockey schedule, I see very little non-hockey entertainment from October to May. I miss it, but the break helps give me perspective.

Well…that was fun.

You know, one of the aspects of that goal that excites me the most was the lateral movement before the shot.

It wasn’t much, but that slight east-west movement, skating backwards towards center ice for a bit before pulling the trigger on his right-handed shot, found the lane for that OT GWG.

When Joe Corvo first arrived and started actually walking the puck off the side wall towards center ice…well, I practically swooned. :-D

Couldn’t remember when we last had a defenseman with that kind of move in his repertoire.

Sadly, it seems to have disappeared from Joe’s, but maybe Jamie can remind him of how deadly effective lateral movement before the shot can be.

Thanks for sharing that. Have to get our hockey fixes where we can through the “incredibly long offseason”.

Here we are now...entertain us.

Thanks for that link. My family was watching the game together and we were screaming crazy loud when McBain scored. Interestingly, at a Canes practice I watched Carson was working out with Tom Rowe and they spent half an hour on that one move. Carson then scored a goal in the game that evening using the same move – perhaps a little less gracefully in the skating department. McBain is going to be a very special player for the Hurricanes because he has that ability to time his moves and to see the ice in ultra wide vision.

Oh boy...

Nice result and all, but if Peters, Dwyer, Carson, McBain, and LaRose are on the ice for the last 30 seconds of an OT, I think I’ll cry.

You people and your xbox’s disgust me. I only say that because mine crashed a couple months ago due to a “hardware failure”. The warranty was expired so I’m torn between paying half price for a refurbished one, or full price for a new, with a warranty. Oh well, stuck with the wii, but no hockey game for me. Otherwise, my summer has been spent preparing for, and recovering from, neck surgery. But at least it’s allowed me to spend the whole summer with my kids instead of chasing drunk tourists around the Outer Banks all summer. My hockey fix, you good people here at CC and over on Twitter are taking care of that for me. Thanks!

well for me

between what has been happening here @ CC the prospect camp,the NHL entry draft,3 road trips to Charlotte,following what i can get from the WHL and the OHL, keeping up with my children & grandchidren,reading some older books ( non hockey types) becoming more politically aware of what is NOT happening for we, the people,writting letters physically as in “snail mail” to people i have not heard from in ages.and loving & helping my wife as much I am physically able to. and last but not least Twitter….Yaaaawwwnnnn other than that, pretty boring…NOT !! hehehe…..I had to laugh about the Xbox & games & reruns posts…yet i really should NOT be totally surprised as my grandkids even the girls go nuts with xbox and PS3. myself, operating this computer is enough for me…:-}

Doing what all the other NHL players are doing - GOLFING

However I did play the Wii version of the NHL game on vacation….Canes versus Blackhawks……(My brother is a blackhawks fan)……Canes won in a shootout…….
Eric Staal scored in the shootout……..(only in a video game).

Can’t wait for the season to roll around…..Hope we can survive the longggggggggg road trip at the start with our head above the water!

I haven’t played an NHL game since NHL 02. It was the best control-wise NHL game I ever played. The newer ones just felt like they complicated it way too much.

Other than working and browsing the fan sites, I usually spend my time away from work playing video games like World of Warcraft or watching TV or movies – or going out and enjoying some of the great restaurants we have in the area, like Sono and The Pit. :)

NHL 2011 is going to be amazing. Every CHL team included, all 3 leagues (OHL, WHL, QMJHL) with most roster players actually in game. Jeff Skinner will be my first call up. At least that will make September go fast.

Here ya go… they’re at the end of this album, not too much to see as of this morning but check that same album as I’ll probably be visiting again before the weekend, and I’ll be downtown for RWO so I’ll get a few (as will many folks, I’m sure) of the completed product.

Watched the first period of Game 3 of the 2009 Jersey series with elskling this morning.
