Justin Peters Signs Two-Year, Two-Way Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes announced the signing of goalie Justin Peters to a two year deal today.  Peters has been penciled in to be Cam Ward's back up for this coming season.

The new contract will pay Peters $500,000 at the NHL level in 2010-11 and $550,000 in 2011-12.  He will earn $105,000 at the AHL level both years, but will earn a guaranteed minimum of $225,000 this coming year and $250,000 the following season.

When given the opportunity, Peters looked good last season in Carolina and finished with a 6-3 record.

Peters, 23, made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in 2009-10, winning each of his first three starts and finishing the season with a 6-3-0 record, 2.83 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in nine games. The Blyth, Ont., native made his first NHL start on Feb. 6, stopping 34 of 35 shots to earn first-star honors against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. He went on to win each of his first three NHL starts, also defeating New Jersey and Toronto before suffering his first NHL loss at Florida on March 6. Peters also appeared in 47 AHL games for Albany, earning a 26-18-2 record with a 2.54 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. He played for the Canadian team at the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic, stopping nine of 11 shots in the second period of Canada’s 10-9 shootout victory.

Peters (6’1", 205 lbs.) was originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the second round, 38th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in 148 career AHL games with Albany, and has a career AHL record of 62-69-6, with a goals-against average of 2.84 and six shutouts. He has also played 32 career ECHL games with Florida during his professional career, going 18-10-3 with a 2.67 goals-against average. Prior to turning pro, he registered a career record of 88-70-16 with a 2.88 goals-against average in 189 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) games with Toronto St. Michael’s and Plymouth.

Can’t be upset about that contract… Surprised it was so low. I thought $550k was the league minimum?

If Peters is going to be Cam’s backup——-why a two-way deal?
(or do we think he will not be the FT backup?)

It does give the opportunity to switch around Murphy and Peters. Maybe give Peters some #1 time in Charlotte if he is getting cold or conversely give Murphy a few games in the NHL to gauge his future potential.

Makes sense. Maybe even do the same with Pogge too, assuming they sign him up.

I’m just hoping he gets to play a good 15 games or so (or more like 20, but theres no way)….I don’t expect it, however, but hope that I’m wrong. With some development he’d be an even better stand-in for ward, and probably bring up a good trade in a couple of years.

I think they gave him the two-way deal for conditioning purposes as well as budgetary reasons. Looks like he is our F/T back-up though! Good for Petedawg! He’s probably worth a little more than they signed him for, but that’s how this team is operating this year… cheap..really cheap! Still think we shoulda kept Petey in Charlotte @ least one more season and re-signed Manny on a 1 year deal to give us a little veteran presence, something we will definatley lack this season! Oh well, the youth movement is in full swing! Go Canes!

i think it stinks…but if Justin is happy then who am i to pitch a fit and have a cow?

I wish him all the best…

but i also see this as it muddies up the water a bit..with Murph & Pogge still there…sigh, i guess i’ll just sit back and wait huh ? Good to see many folks back on Twitter & here @ CC …steve waves bye…as he has 2 things to do before he is done for the day !!

I think he’s just happy to be in the NHL,as a backup.. with a promising future to be much more (somewhere else, most likley). He’s doesn’t seemed to be worried about the money, as he has plenty of career left to make a nice paycheck! I think he ends up a starter in the NHL someday.. he has so much composure, almost like a certain rookie that led us too drinking Stanley Cup champaign!

Waivers

Bob (or Cory), do you have any info on who is not subject to waivers on the team roster?

In particular, I believe that Justin may not be subject to waivers this season, which is why JR probably insisted on a two-way contract.

Drafted in 2004 (at the RBC Center!) with an August birthday, he signed his first pro contract for the 2006-2007 season, so I’m guessing that means he was 19 at the time (a summer signing before his August 30th birthday).

So, as I understand the waiver rules for goalies (different than for skaters), his threshold for waiver eligibility is 5 years, when the first contract is signed at age 19. Would have been 4 years if he was 20.

But, there’s an 80-game threshold, too, which presumably he could hit late this season, with 9 NHL games already under his belt.

Hence, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him conceivably swapped for Murphy at some point for a trial run (when all is lost for the season?), before that 80-game benchmark is met.

Also, this allows JR to pick up a different spare tire if it turns out that he’s just not what we thought he was in the 9-game peak we got.

And, JR got all of that for minimum wage. Maybe that’s all that was available from arbitration, so why raise hackles? Or, is Justin just wanting a chance and will count on good things happening down the road?

Tlusty is waiver eligible and you are correct about Peters. I don’t know about the other youngsters offhand but will look them up when I have the chance.

Thanks, Bob.

In particular, I’m interested in the status of Casey Borer, since he’s right now our #1 injury call-up (Gulp!). I think he may also be subject to waivers this year.

He signed his pro contract at age 21, after his senior year at Cloud State, in Spring 2007. So, although less than the 60-game threshold for a 21-year-old signee, he’s had a contract for more than 3 years.

So, that complicates things a bit, although there’s some exemptions like “emergency call-ups” if an injury would take the team below the 22-player roster count that grant safe passage.

Also, something about a 10-game exemption, once exposed to waivers. Still, if Rodney gets a contract (not yet a given), he’s subject to waivers, too.

All the more reason to make Harrison the depth, JR, not a player option.

Carson, please take notice

I really wish Carson would re-think his position. Jim Rutherford prefers his players to earn their salary and then get rewarded; rather paying young players like Carson before they have established themselves on the ice. Carson would be better off signing a one way deal for less than he wants; and then showing the Hurricanes he is indispensable.

by abramsdoug on Jul 5, 2010 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t imagine JR is that impressed with Carson. They let him walk over the possibility of being forced to pay him just $1 million. I think it is silly to let him walk like that, considering he could fill out our top-4 decently unless Babchuk/Sanguinetti show they are ready. I really hope has something else in the works.

Jim Rutherford and Arbitration

Jim Rutherford truly detests arbitrations; and the only sense I can make of the Carson situation is that he had Carson slotted at one pay grade and Carson’s agent wanted much more. Assuming that situation existed, Jim Rutherford opted to avoid arbitration and instead to test the waters. Carson was very steady defensively. His offense was somewhat less developed although it was improving. I remain cautiously optimistic that Carson will re-sign.

This is more important than most people think.

I am very skeptical that Cam can play a busy schedule. That back is chronic. I think He will get more starts than we all think. Either way, the goal position is only as good as the yet to be determined defense. Hope I am wrong about that back.

A good deal...for the Canes!

Half a mil two way deal for a goalie with his potential and composure = a happy fan. I’m also glad he is not all about the money at this stage, he has plenty of time and he’s back-up to Cam who is not without his injury worries so he is going to rack up a good few starts.

by cassthelass on Jul 6, 2010 5:10 AM EDT reply actions

It was a good decision for the ’Canes… a bad decision for Justin Peters…

IF Cam ward is healthy then Peters will get to play in less than 15 games this season… and his career will be screwed.

But Cam Ward will probably not stay healthy… after all… his money is guaranteed…

This could be exactly why the org wanted the two-way and he agreed.

Now everyone’s motivated to at least be able to get Justin some game action in Charlotte if Mo’s riding the hot goalie, as he is prone to do.

Also, I think JR’s still got an eye out on the goalie market, to see if they could buy Justin another year in the AHL. Just a hunch.

by Elsker on Jul 6, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but if they do that, who is the odd man out in Charlotte, Pogge or Murphy? Ahhh this time of year is so full of intrigue….and teeth gnashing……….and profanity. Lots of profanity.

by wylde4canes on Jul 6, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s never a bad thing to have too many goalies.

One of the most tradeable assets there are. Plus, they can even be loaned out to lower teams, if the org runs out of slots, which we’ve done before.

The + & - of agents

while we all know an agents job is to get the best and the most for his client…but in Carson’s case and IF what we see and read here despite NOT Knowing any or all of the facts from Caron’s side…that maybe…just maybe carson’s agent could, would, or might be a poison pill of sorts? again like ALL of us here I am just guessing…as we all know that there have been times when agents got fired for hurting a player and not helping a player …hell Gordon Gecko said it best right ?? Greed is Good? well in the this case IF that is the case I think it’s a dis-service to the player…but I’m just a fan…

And if it Aint Hockey,It Aint Nothin !!

well, what’s Carson worth? $750,000, $850,000, $1 mil? Is it less? I don’t think so, based on his play and the fact that he was an RFA. His contract was up.

So, if it is that he was worth somewhere between $750,000 and $1 mil, they couldn’t work that out? It’s ridiculous. And the most that arbitration was likely to cost this team was $200,000.

But that’s where they are now. They are quibbling over $200,000 and over whether to give contracts to 25 yos who are the fill-in pieces to the puzzle. Meanwhile, other teams are giving 2-year $6 mil deals to proven NHL talent and floating offers to Russian snipers named Ilya.

Peters deal is a good one

Great to see that we inked our backup goalie today; Peters it the backup unless he totally tanks it for us in training camp. Still knowing JR as we all do don’t be suprised if a vet goalie is brought in just for a look in camp.

Go Canes good luck Pete Dawg.
