You have to take the good with the bad; there’s plenty of both.

I’m with you.

Whitney?

He was pretty productive as a Cane, had a hand the Cup Win, very important in the run 2 years ago, and ya I’ve got a personal bias towards him versus Glen Wesley. 2 years from now Ward probably replaces him. I thought this was somewhat subjective.

by Go_Shelf on Aug 11, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I’,m not saying he wasn’t productive, but I hardly see him as one of the four main people in franchise history. I’d have a few in front of him … Wallin, Sami, Ward, O’Neill. Just my two cents.

by Cory Lavalette on Aug 11, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

For 1 season less and 100 games less than Ronny he only ended up 20 points less and had a higher pts/game and helped the team win a Stanley Cup which Ronny can’t boast.

by Go_Shelf on Aug 11, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

(As a Cane) You made mention of Whalers stats and players but are we including them?

by Go_Shelf on Aug 11, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I would think “franchise history” would include the Hartford Whalers. Probably not the New England Whalers though.

Names like Blaine Stoughton, Mike Rogers, Kevin Dineen, Pat Verbeek, Sylvain Turgeon and Geoff Sanderson come to mind. I would think there would be room on Mount Puckmore for one or two of those guys; maybe Kevin Dineen if only one goes on?

Francis and Brind’Amour definitely deserve a spot on Mount Puckmore. Staal too if only one Whaler goes on it. Glen Wesley?

Let's go Hartolina WhalerCanes!!!! I am a big fan of the Canes, but I still have some residual Brass Bonanza Blue and Green in me.

by Ned Butler on Aug 11, 2010 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you can make an argument either way, it should be defined. The only thing I remember about the Whalers was they were always the warm-up series for either Boston or the Habs that eventually led to Hab vs Boston Div. Final.

by Go_Shelf on Aug 12, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

He was a talented and important player for a few years but he only played in Raleigh for 5 years out of his near 20 year career. Not to mention he was a 15 overall while here and +/ 0 during the Cup year.

I could see putting Erik Cole up on the Mount Puckmore before Whitney. Not to bash Whitney but I think Bob got the right 4.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

Was supposed to say he was a -15 while here. Not sure why the strikethrough occured.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.

by anonymousJ on Aug 11, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

on the inadvertant strike through -

the html shorthand for strikethrough is “-” the text you want struck, then “/-”

With hockey posts that use the term +/- it happens more than you can believe. You might get used to typing out plus/minus if it bothers you. or live with it irf you prefer this +/

I also want to let folks know that the original description we received specifically said players. (this was a couple weeks ago). Since then we’ve seen other teams with owners and GMs and coaches up on the Mt Puckmore. Obviously Jim Rutherford deserves a mention if those roles entered the mix. Maybe others too. But, overall, these four really do say a lot about who the Canes are. Bob did a great job saying a lot in a little space for a national audience.

In a wide open environment (not just players) as to who are the foundations of the Canes as we know them, it would probably have to include the owner and GM of our org, in particular, since we’re one of the few that have had only one of each in the entire 13 seasons of our existence as the Canes (not even including the end of the Whaler years).

So, Karmanos, Rutherford, Francis, and Brind’Amour probably become your stone-faced quartet.

Definitely didn’t have Wesley in my first round, but you made an excellent case for him Bob.

"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."

Well done! I’ve very proud of who is on the mountain. And I think it’s terrific that we have such strong representation given the relatively short life of our franchise. And some great honorable mentions as well.

Again going against the original assignment which was players only, but one of the commenters on Puck Daddy made a pretty solid case for ChuckandtheletterK.

I can’t argue with your picks (well, maybe Staal, just on time). Honorable mentions to Irbe, Rutherford, and Karmanos.

Forslund on Mt. Puckmore…interesting, but he’d probably protest “I’m not worthy!”

Tripp? He just loves that he even got mentioned…and will not fail to mention that he’s been mentioned, at every opportunity. :-D

Mount Puckmore

I have to consider Kevin Dineen..for new fans in NC he embodied all elements of a real hockey player.(at least to me)..I saw him score the first frachise regular season goal down in Tampa..(if a fading memory is correct)

by gump61 on Aug 11, 2010 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

I know it was definitely TB for the 1st franchise game, but I don’t remember the 1st goal. I guess between the 2 of us we could almost function like a normal person.

I’d say I would help, but I don’t know if my contribution would be additive or subtractive (?).

by ncyankee on Aug 11, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Bob made great choices———for the top four, and the honorable mentions.

Interesting that the three who are retired have jersey’s in the rafters (Rod will)
and have stayed on in staff positions ! Speaks volumes about this franchise, I think.
And, of course, Staal will be the face of the franchise for years to come !!

Really makes me proud of our “non-traditional” hockey market. And for those for and against, we have to admit that the “ROCK” through all of this has been JR.

GO CANES! Go Heels!

Irbe says no

Arturs Irbe should make it way before Staal. Nothing against the young man, but he has not put the time in like the others have. If the question was the next generation on Mount Puckmore then yes by all means he gets it. Not now way too early…..what else does he have to look forward to even Lord Stanley fail in comparison….
1. Ron Francis
2.Rod BrindA’mour
3.Glen Wesley
4.Arturs Irbe

Kevin Dineen

You know, I was ready to agree with this position…until I checked my memories.

As important as the little Latvian was to our team from 1998 to 2004, spanning five seasons and some change in an unfortunate sixth season, it’s astounding to realize that Eric has now also logged six full seasons as a Cane, plus his lockout season as a Rat.

However, although it was before my time, if you’re looking for someone that has logged some time with the Canes/Whalers in an important role, then Kevin Dineen’s 9+ seasons as a Whaler and two seasons as a Cane, makes him a candidate for Mount Puckmore.

Team captain during the Canes years, last goal scorer as a Whaler, first goal scorer as a Cane. Team leader in goals or scoring many seasons.

He was certainly before my time as a Canes fan, but I do appreciate the body of work that he left behind.
