PRE SEASON INFORMAL SKATING STARTS

some players reported to the pre season informal skate today

the offseason is at its end

there was a nice turn out with 15 players at camp brind-amour

do the players who showed up like the ones trying to make the team for the first try who showed up get "cookie points"

does this make a difference for these young players?

and when does the official training camp start for the canes when coaches show up and make the roster

Pre-Camp Stake

I think the Hurricanes organization is well-aware of which players participate fully in the pre-camp skates. It is also a matter of the players being prudent about being in shape when the actual camp starts. For some of the young forwards, such as Dalpe, Matsumoto, Dwyer, and Matt Kennedy they have a chance to make a name for themselves with the Canes this year. Sanguinetti, Rodney, and Carson must surely realize they too have the chance of a lifetime to stake themselves out as NHL roster players. I also wouldn’t count out Lawson – who has the grit and hockey intelligence to surprise some people at camp.

I was especially pleased that Samsonov was able to attend camp. It is a cross-roads year for Samsonov, LaRose, and Cole. All three if they perform to their full abilities could be life-long Canes. If any falter, and particular, Samsonov and Cole, then their tenure with Carolina could end this year.

thank you
i am glad to know the hurricanes are aware about who showed up
do some of the real important players who were at camp have say to the coaching staff
for example if some veteran sees a young player look really good in the pre season skating, could they mention tht to a coach?

Hey AD

many of us who do like Samsonov, was happy as a loon in a lake full of fish…he knows what’s at stake here..as do the younger players…and i do expect Training Camp to a hot and heavey time…and i don’t & won’t envy the coaching staff as besides many who are all but assured a spot on the team, those last 4-5 slots will be hard fought for…hopefully that kind of intensity will carry over to the Road trip to Helsinki and beyond .Good idea & post here crazychf…thanks…

And if it Aint Hockey,It Aint Nothin !!

Samsonov and the Pre-Camp

To be fair to Samsonov, in the past he had commitments that kept him from being able to get to the Brind’Amour camp as early as was ideal. In other words, Samsonov would have come to the Brind’Amour camp when it opened if had been able to do so. Samsonov is truly a professional; and there is no question in my mind that he realizes the importance of his starting this season in top form. I have liked Samsonov from the moment the Hurricanes got him off of waivers. I would be excited for him and the team f he can return to his top form. I’ve felt that he in particular would benefit from the LaRose/Cole pre-camp workouts.

Samsonov in the area early

Ran into Samsonov at a local Whole Foods last week with his wife and two kids in tow. He seemed upbeat about the season, but also mentioned that there was going to be "an entirely new team at camp this year’. I sensed a little anxiety from him about what his future, this year and beyond, holds. It has been widely commented that he is miscast in the current scheme, hope he gets the opportunity to play on the 2nd or 3rd line all year, and is able to parlay that into a new contract with another team; as it’s doubtful that he is in the future plans of JR. Best case scenario, IMO, is for him to have a strong year and get traded to a team that utilizes his talents at the deadline.

you are right
and now with all of this talent, there will be no spot for not playing hard, because if you dont preform well there are other players waitng to take your spot who could do well
this could be very good for the canes

Very true..

I would suggest that there are even more positions up for grabs. If some rookies look good enough, i wouldn’t be surprised to see a veteran or two traded, or waived!?? eh?

could very well be
do u think there will be lots of call ups/ call downs from the ahl when we need a new player on the roster?

by Crazychf on Aug 24, 2010 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily..

Depending on your idea of “lots of”, NO i don’t think there’ll be wholesale moves, just for the sake of moving someone, but rather based on need..ie injury, or someone not performing up to snuff!
I would expect to see the beginning of the season being steady, where the players here, and Charlotte get a chance to get settled into their GAME! then after the dust settles, maybe some surgical changes, in order to fix a problem, or take advantage of a positive developing player in Charlotte being rewarded by a call up!!!

ok thank you,
so if a player starts in charlotte, tht deosnt mean they wont end up has a hurricanes later in the year?

by Crazychf on Aug 24, 2010 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Technically, they all have a chance to be called up to the NHL, but some have more of a chance than others based on who needs to be replaced, skill level, injuries to the Checkers themselves, etc.

"What Carolina really has going for them is Brandon Sutter. When that kid first showed up, he looked like a skinny little thing that wouldn’t last two weeks. But he’s turned into a real star."

which players on defense have the best chance of making the team or being called up during the season?

by Crazychf on Aug 24, 2010 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Again this kind of depends on who gets injured. If we lose Gleason, we need someone really solid on the defensive side of things (Carson perhaps if he doesn’t make the team at training camp). But if we lose an offensive d-man (say Pits or Babs) we’re going to call up a different guy to fill their role.

And then sometimes, they call up someone that, outwardly, doesn’t make sense to us.

Well, right now i'd say...

1-6 are probably (in order) Pitkanen, Gleason, Corvo, Babchuk, McBain, Carson
7 & 8 are Harrison, Sanguinetti – (not necessarily in order) my guess we start with all eight!
If we start with seven – good chance harrison stays up because we could lose him to waivers, but i don’t think Sangs has to be waived!
—however training camp could change this… other D-men could beat someone out ie .
Borer, Rodney, or Lawson

My Guess on the Defensive Lines

Harrison was waived last season and cleared waivers; so if the Hurricanes decided to go with 7 defensemen, I tend to think Harrison would be waived down to Charlotte. My best guess is that Jim Rutherford will keep 8 defensemen on the team. My guess is also that Babchuk, Carson, and Sanguinetti will be moved around for the 6th pairing – and depending on whether injuries start playing a role. Babchuk seems to be in the lead for the 6th pairing; but I would not be surprised to see Sanguinetti in the third pairing at times: 1st/ Corvo & Gleason; 2nd/Pitkanen & McBain; 3rd combinations of Babchuk/Carson/Sanguinetti; Harrison getting some time on ice as well, but more limited in the rotation.

Sainguetti's waiver exemption status

By my understanding of the waiver exemption rules, Sainguinetti is not subject to waivers this season.

For those of you that follow this closely, my reasoning is based on him signing his NHL contract in April 2007 at age 19 and not playing 11 NHL games at that age.

Therefore, he should have 4 years or 160 NHL games, whichever comes first, of waiver exemption.

He has 5 NHL games total to date, so the total game limit is not a factor and the 4 years of waiver exemption expires April 2011.

Here we are now...entertain us.
